PERSONAL PARS.
PERSONAL PARS. TOM THOMAS, Barry, Is the fastest man playing on the wing in the Cardiff League. SIMMONDS, Cardiff Corinthians, Appeared in the ranks of the Aberamanites last Satur- day and gave a good account of himself. TOMMY DANIEL JONES, Aberdare, Was in fine fenn against Abcraman. He repeated his performance against Barry by scoring three goals. JOHNNY THOMAS, Maesteg, Has received an invitation from Cardiff to assist them, but up to the present he has decided to remain with the Llynvi Taley tea n. F. HURFORD, Dinas Powis, Plays 3. grand game on the wing. Now that L. C. Rooney has found it fit to deserf his old lore, Hurford, after a few more games with tho Seconds, will fill Rooney's plrce. CHARLIE OAKLEY, Caerleon, The left wing and captain of Caerleon Harriers, who Is recruiting his health in the north of England, is progressing satisfactorily, and hopes soon to be well enough to return home. WILL ADDICOTT, Caerphilly, Has played at half- wing, centre, and full-back for the United this season, but it IB in the latter position that he plays best. If he can be induced to keep that posi- tion, the United's long felt want will be supplied. GEO. WILLIAMS, Chepstow St. Mary's, Is leaving Chepstow for Gloucester, and win be seen in the city ranks as outside half. He is very smart, and will strengthen the city team considerably, as Gloucester are badly served at half; in fact, the whole of their bocks are rocky. J. ATTWOOD, Treorky, Is one of the best known forwards in the Upper Rhondda. He is a very conscientious player, and can dribble exceptionally well. He previously played the Association game, and is now often seen bringing off pretty movements with the b,U at his feet. EDGAR DAVIES, Tredegar, Is one of the best of the Tredegar pack at the present time. Although one of the youngest members, he is playing a game equal to the best. He has now thoroughly mastered the game, and plays with con- fidence and dash. IDs strong point is dribbling, and it is a treat to see him dashing off with the ball at his toss. The only fault with Edgar is one he cannot help, viz., he is rather short. ALB. HARVEY, Abertillery. For grit, pluck, and deadly tackling, there is not a back in the league to beat Alb. Harvey, the popular Abertillery custodian. Against Pontnewydd, he was at his best, and time after time he came in for rounds of applause for really grand work. His tackling and touch finding were a treat, but the best of all was the wonderful way In which he cleanly picked up the ball from the toes of the rushing and burly Pontnewydd forwards. It was, indeed, fins work. JIMMY HARRISON, Lydney, Is a clever centre. and is playing a fine game for the team this season. He had hard luck in not attaining the county in every match, and is picked to play at that he changed places with Goss at half-time, and went on the county side. He has been first reserve for the county in every match and is picked to play at Cornwall to-day in preference to Eddie Baker, and with Austin Lewis, his clubuutte, on the wing with him they should do well.

FOOTBALL SKETCHES! . I
FOOTBALL SKETCHES! I NEWPORT'S DEFEAT BY I CARDIFF. I The Value of Good Goal I Kicking. [BY "FORWARD."] I H. B. Winfield was the hero of last Saturday's match. | It was due to his reMRTkably fine kicking that the I match was won by Cardiff, and his skill in this much- J ) neglected, but important, department of play was an object lesson of the value of goal kicking. People are prone to attach the element of luck to a penalty or I a dropped goal, and in many instances they are war- ranted in so doing. But there are exceptions to all rules, and Newport people will be sportsmen enough to agree that very few better goals, purely as the result of skill, have been kicked anywhere than the first of the two negotiated by Winfield on Saturday. The second goal was also • above the average, but it would have sufficed if Winfield had stopped at the first goal. By this, I mean that a three-point win would have been a more equitable result on the day's play. It is questionable whether Newport will suffer a six-point defeat in any other match this season. Swan- sea only beat theih by a point down at St. Helen's, and I wonder sometimes whether the all-conquering Wes- terners are destined to meet their Waterloo at Newport next Saturday week. I am anticipating, with most other people, that Cardiff will not win at St. Helen's to-day. However, that is not the subject of the present article, and I must keep myself within the limits oi what happened on Saturday. I Plucky and resourceful as ever, Newport made a bold bid for victory, but those two penalty goals proved their undoing. They could not be regarded as losers until Referee Gil Evans had sounded his whistle for the last time. "They are a wonderful lot," said a well- known Western critic, who saw the match, and we can all endorse that opinion. Boots and Hodges are veritable giants in the front line. Both seem to be inspired with only one idea, and that is to play to the very last ounce for their side. And, then, what-a splendid knowledge of the game they possess, especially Boots, who knows exactly what to do and when to do it under all circumstances. The way he got into position to take the ball from Pritchard when he scored his try was really admirable, and reminded one of the aptitude of that great pack of forwards once led by T. C. Graham* The Newport forwards of those, daig were all three-quarters when it came to open play, and one can safely say that it will be a long time before we shall see their likes again. Looking back, it seetns strange that Newport have never, yet succeeded in beating Cardiff In ail four matches In one season, while the distinction of so doing has only once fallen to the lot of Cardiff. New- port will have to wait till next season before they can set their hearts upon this achievement; and who > knows what will happen in the meantime? Though I the actual scoring favoured the home team last Satur- day, it is open to doubt whether a closer or keener game has ever been played. There waa not much of that attractive open play which is the glory of Welsh football, but, as I have already pointed out, that was due to the mediocrity of the half-back play on either side. Not a single opening worthy of the name was made by the half-backs throughout the game, and the three-quarters were handicapped accordingly. It is for- tunate for Wales that she can count upon the services Of Owens and Jones, and it is to be hoped that they will be exempt from any accidents which would keep them out of the field when the time comes to meet England, Scotland, and Ireland. They are In a class by themselves to-day, and it must be a matter of some concern to the powers that be that there is no half-back of outstanding merit "coming along." Maybe, such a youth will make his appearance before the present season is closed or before next season is far advanced. As an inside half. I have great hopes of R. David. the Cardiff recruit. Though a tyro in first-class football, his play all round was superior to that of an expe- rienced player like Hillman. David has the advantage of being young and well-built, while he seems to have a natural aptitude for his work at the heels of the forwards. Griff. Hughes we all know, of course, and it is hard to speak disparagingly of a player whose ) phick knows no li;nit, but it must be acknowledged I that, with all his grit, he has not sufficient initiative and individual cleverness to be a real success as outside half. It has been suggested that Percy Bush should be J given a trial, and thousands of people are asking why I he hIS not been given a chance. It appears that Bush declined to play in a strange position in matches of so much importance as that of last Saturday and that of to-day. Well, there is a good deal to be said for and against him taking a stand, but it is a matter which I will not dwell upon. What I will say is that, with a fair amount of practice, Bush, in my opinion, would make a brilliant outside half. In any event, I cannot imagine him turning out' an absolute failure, and if he is prepared to play in future matches he ought to be given a trial. The man who, perhaps, was more closely watched than any other player last Saturday was A. B. Timme. The game had not been long in progress before it was obvious to everybody that be was out of his place, and that he did not like the wing position. In the closing stages of the play he brought off a few powerful bursts, which convinced me, at any rate, that he would I be eminently more serviceable in the centre. Not that I needed to be so convinced, because I have Dot yet forgotten his play in the centre against the Welsh team at Inverleith last February. I have been living in hope I all this week that he would be given his proper place against Swansea to-day. Given the ball faifty tHo- quently, and a good start by his half-backs, It WW114 go hard, I imagine, with the Swansea centres in trying to stop him. He was not in proper condition last Satur- day. but a little training will put him ail-right. Bather a vexed question with some people I know » Whether Timms ought to be given the opportunity of "losr&W, the Welsh gam e," seeing that he will be t?'?t against Waks for Scotland in a few raon MS heaoe.. That, let me say at once, is not a view of thlDp Mi which I share. If Dr. Timms, as a resident of CaMN? is worthv of his place in the Cardiff team, let BAK av:O[{h6y 0;11 hc whether he be a 'fšmt Parsee. He can pick up just as many "wrinkles" « fc spectator as he can M a player, and breadth of WliV ment ought to be sufficient to dismiss such a sarrow., cramped idea of sport. It is due to the Cardiff forwards that every praise should be given them for their dogged, persistent play! in the first half, when they had to play against a 1 very strong wind. Cardiff has not been represented by" a better pack for many years, and, with the proment- line of three-quarters, what a pity it is that a fiistei class outside half is not available. He is the one stroBf link missing in the team. and the strength of QhOB is determined by the weakest link.

HINTS AND CRITICISMS.
HINTS AND CRITICISMS. By "Old Heathen." Kicking a football in correct style is not so May 49 accomplishment as many would imagine, for there is a wrong as well as a rigr.t way ti set about it. and in Soccer football the right way is always neces- sary. As a critic, I have to confcss my inability to expertly practice what I preach, but I can express my views in theory, and than will suit you better. Tbcra is an erroneous idea, generally accepted and generally used, that 11 the bad is laarjy anil iquareiy met vwui il. e point of the boot a btnught snot llo oound to follow. After the recent declamatory outbursts against foot- bail by certain ministers, it is quite pleasing to find, so many local teams running under the direct super- vision of religious bodies. Canton Bible Christians is one example, and a friend has supplied me with details of the Hope Baptist eleven, which discloses spiend4 camer&derie combined with capital footoall. The team, is composed almost entirely ot oict Oardifi school leaguers, and the "Auld Lang syne" feeling is, there- fore, abundantly evident. Bert Codd, the captain, i80 an old Radnor scholar, and he keeps his side well together. What Will Philpott lacks in science he more than makes up with roousiiitss, and Ch^pun and "Orbey" Lang are a nippy and tricky pair who caa always be depended upon to take advantage of the slightest chance. At centre-half Arthur Wyndham, the first mat P. exhibits a perfect knowledge of the code, whilst the. two backs, ",Ml-oUY", fraikeU and Fred Jenkins, display extraordinary resource in their defence. Jenkins is an ex-intermediate schoolboy, and he has several times assisted Canton Wednesday. He has the hippy knack of turning defence into attack at the right moment.' A new lease of life has been given to the Ivy RIlgby Club, as, after a season's aosenoe from the field. the team has been re-started on a more solid basts—that is as far &3 patriotism is concerned. In their match with the Whartons they gave the "Calico crowd" mora than they bargained for, a correspondent informs ne, and that is quite possible to believe who yojl, find' they possess a most evenly-balanced lot. A. K. 0. and David are particularly smart fronters, a t halves, Ivor Augustus and Davles, are catering for promotion, as they make delightful openings witbnW; the slightest trace of "petting" the ball. I hope thtbt secretary will keep me informed of their doings. Although once more defeated, the Wyndham Stsa are not by any means dismayed, and for last Satuir- day's match there were only seven players avoUaMo. The defeat by only four goals to one is, tbcreforo, under the circumstances, not a heavy one. During tha past few weeks the team has been strengthened by uae addition of new players-Will Howells (RivenUde Wee- leyans), G. Mountjoy, and Albert Bellamy-st) thera is everv prospect of the remainder of the fixtans bete better 'fought. I am askel by a correspondent to contradict the report that Jack Crowther had returned from Birmingham. Crowtbac. it seems, is still in "Brum," but he is expected back at Cardiff in time for the Albion's Mllfotd toac, 18 which he will no doubt take a leading part. Shop assistants' football is just now booming, aad Messrs. Morgans' staff are running a Rugby and SOOMT team in enthusiastic fashion. The Soccer team had fairly comfortable time on Wednesday last with MMW. Jotham's young eleven, but the latter are oartaiaty an improved side, and are rapidly reducing the ttiiwt lead in goals, which must be gratifying to all eolb- cerned.
