[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK…
[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK REVENGE. By FLORENCE WARDEN, Author of "The Secret of Princess Paul," "The House on the Marsh," &c. SYNOPSIS. I Don Daresbury meets Peveril Hatch (Lord Binegar s eldest son) in Carsmere Church 6ne June evening. Hatch has been rude to beautiful Jane Lenwade, whose devoted lover Don is. The men's conflict advances Don's interests, however, for he straightway asks and receives his millionaire father's permission to make Miss Lenwade his wife. The Hatches are very poor, and have let Hatch Place to the Dares- burys. Father and son are great friends, but disagree about Reed, the butler, who appears to have secret influence over Daresbury senior. A family picture is the cause of Don's becoming the prey of vague terrors, and the shocked surprise with which His father meets a Dr. Brownlow, who has come to the place with Lord Binegar, further increases this disquietude. On the morning of a garden party Mr. Daresbury is suddenly taken ill. Don connects the seizure with a newspaper paragraph, especially in view of the butler's strange behaviour. Later in the afternoon the butler is discovered in his master's study—murdered! The alarm is given at once, and doctors called in tc examine the body. In spite of Lord Binegar's efforts to hush the matter up, the doctors come to the conclusion that the butler has been murdered, and has not committed suicide. At the suggestion of a policeman an adjoining room, whose door opens into the room where the tragedy has happened, is about to be searched, when the door is unlocked from the far side, and Don Daresbury appears, pale and covered with fresh blood-stains. Don explains to the horrifted spectators, in a dazed way. that he was so shocked at finding the murdered butler that he lost control of himself. Lord Binegar counsels him to keep out of the way for a time, but Don, seeing that he is suspected, refuses, and is confirmed and encouraged in his resolution by his sweetheart. On going to break' the news to Mr. Dares- bury, the Viscount and Dr. Brownlow find that he has disappeared, whilst the Viscount suspects the Doctor of tampering with a letter addressed to Don. which was fcund on his father's dressing-table. Don is much distressed at his father's absence, but is greatly comforted' by Jane and her mother, the latter asking him over to her house to distract his attention. On the way there, he learns some strange tilings about Dr. Brownlow from his niece, who dislikes him much. Don receives a telegram from his father, telUng him to join him in Paris. On the way he is assaulted, left senseless, and robbed of his papers and money. After Don's departure. Mr?. Lenwade and Jane take up their residence in Dr. Brownlow's London house. Jane is eventually adopted by the Doctor, who insures her life for L10,000, and takes her and Mrs. Lenwade for a holiday to the seaside. CHAPTER XV.-Continued. I I don't know whether you care for whisky," she said, as she placed decanter and glass before him on the table, "but, if you do, pray help yourself. We'll be with you in half an hour." Thanks, thanlos awfully. You're very kind," said Williams, who did not trust the lady any more than she did him, but who was unable to resist the temptation of what he described to himself as "just a thimble- ful." Mrs. Cavel went out of the room with a stolid face, but when she got into he hall she smiled. These disturbing fancies of other folk notwithstanding, he must be obeyed. On her way to her store-room, however, she was struck by a doubt. It would-be wiser to get this man Williams out of the way before-before anything else of importance was attempted. So she went back to the drawing-room, where she found Don in a far corner, a lamp by his side, and an album, in which were pasted a lot of faded photographs, on his knee. "I say, Mrs. Cavel," cried he, Tjhen she came in., "what a jolly lot. of old photo- graphs you've got,! American, aren't they?" Her face changed. Ye-s," said she; "they're from out West, most of them. Very bad, aren't they?" Yes, I suppose they're not as good as the pictures they take now, but they're jolly interesting, all the same. Do you know, I've the oddest sort of notion, in looking at some of them, that I've seen the places, seen them actually, I mean! Mrs. Cavel looked interested. "Have you been to America, then?" No. That's the odd part of it. I wasn't born in England—by the bye, I'm not sure that I know where I was born-but it, wasn't in America, I think. My father would have told me." He was looking at the pictures as he spoke. Mrs. Cavel watched him with the same fas- cination as earlier in the evening. "And your mother, did she tell you nothing?" "My mother! I don't remember her," said he shortly. Since that little mystery about the portrait which had been falsely represented as that of his mother, he had been shy of mentioning the subject. "I wonder what she was like!" said Mrs. Cavel with interest. "I can't tell you." He was pondering over the old photographs, and at last he raised his head abruptly, and asked whether he might take them up to his room. She consented readily enough, being indeed delighted thus to get him further away from the indiscreet Williams. Don sprang up, wished her good-night in a preoc- cupied way, and carried the album upstairs. Mrs. Cavel waited till she heard the door of his room shut, and then she crossed the hall on tip-toe, and listened at the dining-room door. She heard nothing for a few seconds, and then she smiled as the trickling of liquid, the rattling of glass, reached her ear. The charm was working. She did not go back to the drawing-room, but sat down on the lowest stair and waited. As she expected, Williams made no attempt to leave the dining-room, exhibited no symp- tom of impatience at being left alone. The decanter was capital oompany. An hour passed before she moved, and when she rose it was to go softly to the dining- room door and peep in. The decanter was empty, the glass was over- turned, and Williams was slumbering quietly with his head on the table. She turned the key in the lock and left him. Two more hours passed, and the servants went up to bed. Mrs. Cavel could hear their voict-s growing gradually fainter as they reached the top of the house. Then she went to the store-room, brought out the glass with the medicine from under the table where she had concealed it, and prepared a fresh dose with the same ingredients as before. Only there was a, double quantity of the white powder, for time was getting short, and the work had to be done. For were not those eyes, the eyes that shone out from under the bushy eyebrows, reproaching her from over the mantelpiece with her neglect, her delay? Mrs. Cavel, her face greyer, more set than ever, passed out of the room, and went noise- lessly up the stairs towards Don's room. CHAPTER XVI. When Jane Lenwade left Dr. BroWlfllow at the door of his house after her conversation with him about the insurance, Lettice ran into the hall to meet her uncle with annoy- ance and reproach in her face. "Why have iyou let her go? You told me you'd bring her back to me, to explain what she said. Why haven't you kept your word? The fragile girl was still in a half hysterical condition, and the doctor supported her with his arm as he led her gently back into the dining-room. He seated her, with the utmost gentleness, in a chair near the open window, and answered her in the tenderest aooente. "My dear child, how could I let this excit- able young woman loose upon you again, after the effect that one small dose of her society; has already had upon yovbi" Lettice struggled with her own weakness, dried her eyes, and looked with scrutinising gaze into his face. But I must see her, I must. She was not excitable when she came. She spoke to me quite rationally, quite gently, until—until The girl put her hands over her eyes, as if to shut out once more the terrible thought which had been suggested to her. Until what?" said the doctor gently. "Until she saw the design for poor Marian's She broke off suddenly, and then stood up. "I must see her! I will. Until I do, I can't feel sure that-that-" She was walking np and down the room; and as she checked herself again in the midst of her stammering words, she suddenly turned upon the doctor a look of horror and sus- picion impossible to mistake. He rose at once, and tried to put his hand upon her shoulder. My dear child, my dear Lettice, don't look at me like that," he said softly, you make me feel that your grief over our poor darling's death ha-a turned your brain!" She shrank away from his touch. "I'll go down to St. Leonard's, this after- noon-" she began. But he interrupted her. "You will do nothing of the kind, my dear child. You are not in a fit state to travel, and you must remember that, as you have so often and so gracefully reminded me, my in- come depends upon you." The girl turned upon him sharply. Does it?" But the doctor met her eyea with bland composure. Well, does it not?" said he simply. Lettice was silent. "I had a thousand a year while poor Marian was alive, and now I have five hundred a year only. In the face of that fact, can you expect me to let you endanger your health by taking a journey for which you are evidently unfit?" But Lettice only repeated, stubbornly and stolidly: "I must see Miss Lenwade." Well, she is coming up here again in a day or two to see me on business. I will write to her to-night to make an appoint- ment. I wanted her to stay all night, and to return to St. Leonard's to-morrow; but she had worked herself into a great state of ex- citement. and preferred to return to her mother's for the night." And what was the excitement all aboutP" The doctor smiled. Something too fantastic for words," he said emphatically. Miss Lenwade, as you know, is not a girl of brilliant intellect, like you, for instance; and I cannot I elp thinking her mind has become a little unhinged by what happened at Hatch Place. I don't say it's unnatural, poor girl, though it's most unfortunate." Lettice looked at him inquiringly. "Are you going to marry her?" she asked suddenly. But the doctor was not to be trapped into admissions or denials. "This is scarcely a fit time for the discus. sion of matters of that sort," he replied cautiously. "I have a great admiration for Miss Lenwade, but there is a rival in the way, for one, thing." Lettice, who was standing in the shadow of the window curtain, with her back to the light, looked at him searchingly. Yon mean Don Daresbury? But you don't mean to let her marry him! The doctor's handsome face flushed a little. 'Don't mean t Explain yourself." You told Don that she and her mother were abroad, and you certainly have not told Jane Lenwade that Don is at East Arkley! My dear Lettice, if it had been necessary to give either of these young people the infor- mation you mention, why didn't you \lo it yourself? Lettice hung her head, and bit her lip, and the doctor laughed softly. Oh, I'm not reproaching you. Jealousy is a vile passion, we know, but we are none of us exempt from the failing when our affections are concerned. You, actuated by a certain kindness for Don Daresbury, refrain from telling him that Miss Lenwade is at St. Leonard's. I, moved not only by admiration for Miss Lenwade, but by grave doubts as to the desirability of the match in question, have not told Miss Lenwade where her fiance is. So on that point I think you and I can cry quits." Lettice looked at him askance. I don't like Mrs. Cavel," she said suddenly. The doctor raised his eyebrows. "TiLkt's very ungrateful of you. You've ad- mitted she was very kind both to you and your poor sister." Lettioe drew a long breath, and then flung out her next words as a sort of challenge: "But it was a kindness that didn't end well!—either in Marian's case-or my father's." The doctor looked grave. Do you mean to insinuate-" "I insinuate nothing," said Lettice, oateb. ing her breath, and hurrying on at break-neck pace; "only, uncle, if her kindness to Don Daresbury were to end in the same way, I-I should think it my duty—to—to—to—" To what? Lettice seemed to gather up her courage with both hands. To—to have an inquiry made into IIrs. Cavel's proceedings," she stammered out, as she fled across to the door, and left the room. The doctor did not attempt to stop the wil. ful girl. He took a turn or two up and down the room, whistling softly to himself, and then went back to his study, where he re- mained shut up, according to his usual habit, for the greater part of the day. And while Lettice was rather shy, rather shamefaced, when she met him again, the doctor Seemed only anxious, by extra gentle- ness and extra tact, to show her that her indiscretions of the morning were forgotten. But as the evening wore on, the doctor, who was spending the evening, as suaJ, in the drawing-room with his niece, showed certain signs of uneasiness and expectancy; and he presently went to his study, rang up the Tele- phone EJlChange and, asking to be put on to the S.P. Club, Soho, inquired if Wadhum Williams had been there that evening. (To be Continued.)
