[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK…
[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK REVENGE. By FLORENCE WARDEN, Author of "The Secret of Princess Paul," "The House on the Marsh," &c. SYNOPSIS. ) Don Dareshurr meets Peveril Hatch (Lord Bmega eldest son) in Carsmere Church one June evening. Hatch has been rude to beautiful Jane Lenwade, whose devoted lover Don is. The men's conflict advances Don's interests, however, for he straightway asks and receives his millionaire father's permlfsion to make Miss Lenwade his wife. The Hatches are very poor, aDd have let Hatch Place to the Dares- burys. Father and on are great friends, but disagree about Reed, the butler, who appears to have secret influence ever Daresbury senior. A family picture is the causrs of Don's becoming the prey of ague terrors, and the shocked surprise with which his father meets a Dr. Brownlow, who has come to the place with Lord Binegar, further increases this disquietude. On the morning of a garden P2x'y Mr. Daresbury is sudden!v ta?ea ill. Den connects the seizure with a newspaper paragraph, especially view of the butler's strange behaviour. Later in the afternoon the butler is discovered in his master's study-murdered! The alarm is given at. once, aM doctors called In t? examine the body. In ??'? of Lord Binegar's efforts to hush the matter up, t.? doctors come to the contusion that the butler nM been murdered, and has not committed suicide. At the suggestion of a policeman an adjoining room, whose doer opens into the room where the tragNiy has happened, is about to be searched, when the door is unIockeü from the far side, and Don appears, pale and covered with fresh bld-stalns. Don explains to the horrifid spectators, in & (lazed wav. that he was so shocked at finding the murdr''d butler that be lost control of himself. Lord Bine^, counsels him to-keep out of the way for a time, but Don, seeing that he is Mspected. refuses, aM • confirmed and encouraged in his resolution by his sweetheart. On going to break the news to Mr. B:lres- bury, the Viscount and Pro Brownlow flnd that he lias disappeared, whilst the Viscount suspects the Doctor of tampering with a letter addressed to Dn, whicn was fcund on his father's dressing-table. Don is much distressed at his father's absence, but is greatlY comforted by Jane and her mother, the latter asking him over to her house to distract his attention. On the way there, he learns some str?n?e things abou |. Dr. Brownlow from his niece, who dislikes him muc i. Don receives a telegram from his father, telling him to join him in Paris. On the way he is assaulted. left senseless, and robbed of his papers and money. After Don's departure, Mrs. Lenwade and Jane take up their residence in Dr. Brownlow's London house, Jane is eventually adopted by the Doctor, who insures her life for £10,000. and takes her and Mrs. Lenwade for a holiday to the seaside. CHAPTER XIII -Continued. The effect of these words was like the break- ing up of the ice on some mighty river. All the longing, all the pentrup emotion, which had seemed to lie hidden as behind a veil in the depths of her great eyes, blazed up into a fire of burning, consuming passion. Her face quivered, her form gTew less rigid, as, putting one strong white hand upon the girl's arm, she looked her straight in the eyes, and said, in a, hoarse whisper: "My little boy! my little Dick! Oh, no, no! He always says I shall see him; I shall have him back! But he never, never comes! I'm tired with longing! I'm sick with long- fng—all these weary, dreary years!" Jane trembled like a leaf. The tears came to her own eyes; for the heart-broken tone of the saddened woman stirred her to the very depths. But there was something in these wild words which puzzled her, struck her with a new and stronger suspicion than ever. "Your—little—hoy!" she repeated earnestly, in a voice almost as much broken as that ot the older woman. "You've been waiting for him, longing for him, for years, for years! He* oW M he inenr And then came the amazing answer, the answer for which Jane was in some sor? pre- pared My bOy! My little Dick? He's more than two years old, nearly two and a half, in fact." Jane was silent for a space. In the face of this speech, which proved beyond a doubt that the unfortunate woman before her was the victim of a terrible hallucination, she did not know what to say. "And how long do you say you have been waiting for him, expecting him?" she whis- pered at last. Mrs. Cavel stared at her, bit her lip, and j put up one hand to her brow, passing it slowly backwards and forwards. When she answered, it was in a very low voice, shyly, like a child: How long? Oh, I-I can't recollect. But it's a long time, a very long time." "And Dr. Brownlow 4as promised to bring him back?" At that the woman's expression cleared again, and she held herself upright to answer brightly: Oh, yes, and I know he will. There'3 nothing he can't do, nothing. And he's given me his word that I shall have my boy again. I ought not to complain, of course; I ought to be patient, and he tells me so. But- somehow—I was always silly, I suppose—but I can't make up my mind to wait quietly; the time seems so long—so very long!" "When did you first know Dr. Brownlow?" Jane put the question very softly, very gently; but she listened for the answer with bated breath and a fast-beating heart. For to learn more about the doctor was her strangest desire at that moment. Mrs. Cavel, who had been taken by storm, as it were, by Jane's opening the subject of her lost child, tried docilely to collect her thoughts, but it was evident that the effort was not a great success. For she only answered, in a vague manner, after long hesitation: I—I've known him a long, long time." Whom. asked Jane abruptly, struck by the fact that Mrs. Cavel had never mentioned the doctor's name. Him," replied the woman quite simply. Then Jane, cautiously, with many mis- givings, made a first attempt to open the floor woman's eyes. Your boy was two yeaxip and a half old when you lost him, you say?" Yes." "And that's many years ago? Then, if he's alive Mrs. Cavel interrupted her quickly: Oh, yes, my boy's alive! He says so, and he knows everything!" "Well, then, don't you see?" and Jane thrust a coaxing, persuasive hand under the woman's arm—" your boy must be much more than two years old now!" Mrs. Cavel looked at her askance, with fear in her eyes. She did 110t want that dream disturbing, that dream seeing her child, just as she had last seen him, a tiny boy at her knee. Time goes on, and we can t stand still. A little baby becomes a big boy, and the boy grows into a man. Perhaps your little boy is a man by this time!" In her heart Jane had little belief that the lost child was alive at aJI: she thought this sad-eyed woman's hallucination concerned a child whom death had taken away. But what she wanted was, if possible, to wake the poor creature, if for a moment only, to realities; for it was concerning real things that she wanted to question her. Mrs. Cavel stared at her, with parting lips and heaving chest. "A man! My little Dick! Oh, no, no, how absurd!" Jane paused a moment. Then she asked quickly: "How did you lose him?" "He was taken away," began Mrs. Cavel readily. Taken away, while I was out. And-" She broke off guiltily: But I mustn't chatter about it. He told me not to." It was strange how strong the doctor's influence over her was. that the thought of his wish, his command made her reticent directly. It made Jane impatient* sun aaj she felt that this influence was not for goodL The doctor's deceiving you," she said, N he tells you he can bring you back your child at the same age that he was many yers ago. He might bring you another child, but not the same one!" Another child!" echoed Mrs. Caval, appalled, and evidently impressed by Janet earnest manner. Oh, no, I should knew my own!" "And would you, do you think, know him if he were grown up?" asked Jane, trying to make her think. Over Mrs. Cavel's grey face there flashed fc transient ray of illumination. "I've had strange thoughts lately," she answered under her breath. I've had very: strange thoughts!" Jane came back quickly to the subject uppermost in her mind. And to fill up the time while you are waiting for your child," she said, "you nurn sick people whom the doctor sends you?" Yes, I do my best for them. I put them out of their pain." "What?" almost shrieked Jane. "Did you put Marian out of pain?" Mrs. Cavel grew reticent in a moment.' "I did my duty," she said, as she turned away. But Jane followed her, seized her arm. would not be shaken off. Did the doctor tell you to do that?" she asked. Mrs. Cavel grew restless and uneasy. "Ask him what you want to know," she said. I do my duty to my patients, as I would ha-ve it done to me. Only nobody comes to do it to me! Nobody puts me out of my pain: it goes on, on. for ever!" And the deep sadness in her voice thrilled Jane through and through. Scarcely knowing what she believed, the girl persisted: "Did nobody come here to ask questions when Marian died?" Oh, questions, yes, silly questions, rude questions." And how did you answer them?" "As he told me, of course," said lkfrf.. Cavel, irritably. Jane trembled. Then a new thought struck her. "And this Mr. Smith: wbo is staying with you now? Did the doctor send him to you?" Ask him, ask him," said Mrs. Cavel querulously. "May I see him P" ruskJi Jane simple This Mr. Smith, I mean." Mrs. Cavel looked worried, frightened. puzzled. To be catechised thus, without having learned what to answer, was a new experience, a, perplexing one. Jane hung upon her answer. Whoever this Mr. Smith might be, she wanted to warn him that this woman in whose house he was stay- ing was near enough to the borderline between sanity and insanity to be no very trust- worthy nurse. ImpTd by Jane's earnestness and sympathetic manner, Mrs. Cavel seein4d inclined to give way to her wish. "You say my boy would be a "big boy. perhaps grown up now?" she asked eagerly, wistfully, timidly. < Yes," said Jane. Mrs. Cavel took a wavering step or two. towards the door. Jane, triumphant, was congratulating herself on having made at least some effect, when from outside tjje house, from the village green, there cam6 to their ears suddenly the cry of a child. Something in the tones recalled the poor mother's old thoughts, old dreams. The look of vivid interest fled from her face, and she became the cold statue once more. You had better go now," she said decidedly. "And whatever you want to know, you must ask him." In vain Jane pleaded for a word with the visitor, hoping to learn something more from him than she could from Mrs. Cavel. Her hostess was inexorable, and led her by the arm, in a firm grip, to the front door. As Jane, sad and anxious, passed oat through the gate into the road, Don Dares- bury's white face appeared at the window. But the bushes hid her already from view,, and he never guessed who it was that had been so near him. (To be continued.)
