[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK…
[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK REVENGE. By FLORENCE WARDEN, Author of "The Secret of Princess Paul," "The House on the Marsh," &c. SYNOPSIS. 1 Don Daresbury meets Peveril Hatch (Lord Biaegar s eldest ton) In Carsmere Church one Juae evening. Hatch has been rude to beautiful Jane Lenwaae, whose devoted lover Don is. The men's conflict advances Don's interests, however, for he straightway asks and receives bis millionaire father's permission to make Miss Lenwade his wife. The Hatches are very poor, and have let Hatch Place to the Dares- buryg. Father and soa are great friends, but disagree about Reed, the butler, who appears to have secret influence ever Daresbury senior. A family picture is the CaWw of Doe's becoming the prey of "ague terrors, and the shocked Surprise with which hi3 father meets a Dr. Brownlow, who has come to the i P;W1th Lord Bim?ar. further inc$.see tms disquMude. Onthemonm?oftCMdcapMtytM. Daresbury is suddenly taken ill. Don connects tne seizure with a newspaper paragraph, especially m vie^f of the butler's strange behaviour. Later in the afternoon the butler is discovered in bis masters study—murdered! The slarm is given at once, and doctors called in t= examine the body. In spite of Lord Binegar's efforts to hush the matter up, the doctors come to the conclusion that the butler been mnrdered, and has net committed suid¿e. At the suggestion of a policeman an adjoining room, whose door opens Into the room where the trageay has happened, is about to be searched, when the door is>unlocked from the far side, and Don Daresbury appears, pale and covered with freeh biOod-staiM. Don explains to the horrified spectators, in a dsr way, that he WM 80 locked at finding the murdered b?er that he lost matrql of himself. Lord Binegar Couawls.him to keep out of the way for a time, o? Don, seeing that he is suspected, refuses, and is confirmed and encouraged in his resolution by nis sweetheart. On going to break the news to Mr. Dares- bury, the Viscouat and Dr. Brownlow find that he has disappeared, whilst the Viscount ^suspects the Doctor of tampering with a letter addressed to DOD, which was fcund on his father's dressing-table. Don is much distressed at his father's abscnoe, but is grestiy comforted by Jane and her mother, the latter asking him over to her house to distract his attention, On the way there, he learns some strange things about Dr. Brownlow from his niece, who dislikes him maci*. Doa receives a telegram from his father, telling him to Join him in Paris. On the way he is assaulted, left senseless, and robbed of his papers and money. After Don's departure, Mn. Lenwade and Jane take up their residence in Dr. Brownlow's London house. Jane is eveatually adopted by the Doctor, who insures her life for LIO,OOO, and takes her aDd Kø. Lenwade tor a holiday to the seaside. CHAPTER X I I.- Continued. Jaae had already reproached herself on this score, and she now said Quietly, but yet with some doggedceas underneath her Gatward humility: "I Was rftsh. I admit; I ought not to have spoken to her as I did." The doctor looked at her keenly. I'm glad you admit so mnch. Surely there are other people more fitted to be your advisers on snob a delicate matter. I suppose you do admit it's a delicate matter?" he added with quiet sajeasm. Of course," said she with some dignity, as 1 she looked down. I ought not to have spoken to her, but to have gone to the insur- ance people about it." The doctor made no remark for the spaos of a few seoonds. Then he said, very softly indeed:- Yes, that will be the very best way to con- vince you that all is right. I will take you to the office myself." "Oh, oh—thank yon," stammered Jane, rather taken aback by this unexpected offer. I think it is only just to me," he went on "i that You sb<)u7?d in the same low voice, ^jthat you should understand how groundless your suspicions have the chanoe of making me the apology which you certainly owe me." Jane staggered to her feet. > It Yell, yes," she added, quickly. I win go with you when you like. I should like to- You are still dubious? he asked, almost scornfully. "Well, well, you have a right to your own opinion. Will. you stay here the night with Lettioe, and go up with me to the insurance office to-morrow? But Jane shrank from the idea of spending a night under his roof. She did not know exactly how much of her suspicions still remained in the face of the doctor's readiness to satisfy her in the most oomplete fashion. But she did feel a delicacy about staying in his house after the scene they had jam gone through, and after her rejQqtiofc of his suit while at St. Leonard's. Besides, there was the difficulty of meeting Lattice and her questions. So she said that she would rather go back to St. Leonard's that night, as her mother ex- pected her, and that she would write. and make an appointment with him when she got there. Then she lurried away as quickly as she could. and-was glad when she found herself outside the house, and able to review the cir- enmstanoes of her visit. She had some shopping to do for her mother, so she walked to the top of Queen's-road, Bays- water, on her way to Regent-street, and as she went she considered the events of the morn- ing. and the more she did so, the more sure did she become that there was something mysterious and worthy of inquiry in what she had discovered. Certainly the call at the insurance office would be an important point, and ought to settle the matter once for alL But for this satisfaction she must wait, and waiting in suapense was difficult. Then, in the midst of her reflections, there occurred to her an idea which seemed a good on#. Why should she not go to East Arkley, see Mrs. Cavel, and find out from her whether any inquiries had been made at the house after poor Marian's death by the agents or representatives of any insurance company? Whether Mrs. Oavel would be willing to tell even it she knew anything, was, of course, doubtful. She was a strange sort of woman, as Jane knew, little as she had seen of her; but there was always the ohance of learning some particulars, either from her, or from the servant Jane had seen; and. at all | events, the experiment wae worth trying. So, when she had done her shopping, by which time it was searing four o'clock, Jane went to Paddington. and took the train to Arkley, from which plaoe a pleasant walk through the still unspoiled part of a once pretty suburb brought her to the quaint little I troo-bordered village green, at one end of which MHB. Cavel's long gabled home formed a. pictnresque object behind its grass-grown wall and clumps of bushee. Jane looked at the house with a sort of fearful interest, for when she last saw it there fiad been two yotsng girts' faoes at the big window on the right. She looked at the window again. There was somebody occupy- ing the room now, for the window was open, and a vase of flowers stood just. inside. There was an open book. too, olose by the flowers. She slipped quietly into the garden, and ranc the. bell in the gabled porah. The maid who answered her ring was the same girl she had seen there before. Jane saw at once, by the maid's manner, that she was going to be refused admittance. Mis. Cavel was out. the girl said. Jane paused a moment, and then said, with the artful idea of trying to gpt in ae a. visitor to the visitor "Ah! bat you have someone becrfds )(18. Cavel here? Yes. Mr. Smith." replied the girl, promptly. Oh, yes, Mr. Smith. Is he in? ]fr. Smith doesn't see anybody, ma'am." Jane. foiled; was about to beat a reluctant retreat, when she had the good luck to catch, eight of a shadowy figure flitting acroai the haH in the background. M Without earemony, she brushed her way in. put the astonished servant, and ran to meet the statuesque woman in the oolourleas grown. Oh, JLra. Cawel! she cried. I want to speak to you, please." She scaraely knew what she said; but she had gained her object-ohe was inside the house, and face to face with the,.wo- who could solve her doubts if she would. CHAPTER XIII. Although it was five o'clock on a summer afternoon, dusk had aJready reached the wide. cool hall of Mrs. Cavel's old-fashioned houss; and as the stood at the end of the passage leading into the shady garden behind, a statuesque grey figure looming Large under the low ceiling, Jane saw nothing of her face until she had ran up to her, and was within reach of the hand Mrs# Cave! instinctively raised to ward off her approach. M To sPpeai to me!" repeated she la a. frightened whisper. "Who are yotl? Why should you speak to me?" Jane waa peering into her face. which. seen in this dim light, showed even more plainly than in full daylight the traces of great beauty. For in the gloom no wrinkles could be seen; there was nothing to detract from the effect of the pure outlines, while the obscurity gave an added interest and mystery to that strange expression of grief and yearning which had gone to Jane's heart when she saw her before. Who are yon?" repeated Y1"I. Oavel again, in the same subdued, almost husky voice, aa she moved to let the light come in upon the visitor's face through the open garden door. Jane hesitated. She had been in the house before, bat she had on that occasion only passed Mrs. Gavel in the garden, and waa inclined to think that the weird-looking woman had been too much absorbed in her anxiety to speak to Dr. Brownlow to take any note of anyone else. It. seemed to her, in the moment's time she had for reflection before answering, that it would be better, if possible. to avoid giving her own name to this friend of Dr. Brownlow's. So she said: I am a friend of Dr. Brown- low's nieces, Lettioe and Marian." Mrs. Cavel did not move, but her expression seemed to become more stolid, more reserved, as she J listened: "I came here with them one day:; but perhaps you don't remember." There was a pause. Mrs. Cave! would admit nothing, would deny nothing. And what do you want?" she presently repeated, with a sort of stony coldness, not the coldness of temper or of aversion. but the sort of chilly indifference one might imagine in a statue just come to life. Poor Jane felt that the outlook was not promising. As well try to get information ont of the sphinx itself as out of this self- absorbed effigy of a woman. But, bad as the cutloofc was, oho made a valiant attempt. I thought yoa would perhaps be kind enough, to tell me gome thing about poor Marian and how she died." i- If Mrs. Cavel had looked impenetrable before, she looked more so now. With one steady look at her interlocutor, she said, just in the same tone as ever: Why don't you ask him what you want to know?" The question was such a shrewd one that it dispersed the momentary doubts of Mrs. Cavel's sanity, which had been flitting through Jane's mind during this short colloquy. She paused a moment, and then said: How could he know as much as yoa, who J were with her when she died?" j Mrs. Cavel frowned slightly, as if she founfl the subject a painful one. You had better ask him," she repeated in a dull manner, taking a step forward to lead Jane out of the house. That very moment, however, just when poor Jane was giving up all hopes of getting a word out of her, there was a step on tile landing above. Mrs. Cavel abruptly laid her Ij hand on the young girl's arm. and, drawing f her baok, opened the door of a room on her ¡ right, and rather pushed than invited her in. Jane supposed that it waa the Mr. Smith of whom the servant had spoken whose step she had heard, and understood that she was being hidden away on account of that dislike of his to seeing anybody, of which the maid had spoken. Mrs. Cavel shut the door quickly, and turn- ing impatiently to Jane, said: rm really' very sorry; I haveji't much to tell you. The matter is a very painful one; she suffered a good deal. poor girl! But she is out of her pain now." Something in these words, she scarcely know what, made Jane shiver. "We had hoped," she said, "that øh.' would live a great deal longer, years perhaps." Mrs. Cavel walked to the window, which was open down to the ground and. staring out at the lawn, with its dusky clamps of bush and tree, its patches of sweet pea. and I mignonette, late roses and tall hollyhocks. she said in a. gentler tone, a tone in which at last a human note occurred: Why should you wish that? She mffered, poor, dear child; and it made her unhappy. It was better for her to go, much better." Ag-ain an undefined bat terrible thought came into Jane's mind. She sat etill for few moments in the wicker armchair, which Mrs. Cavel had offered her, and looked round a.t the various commonplace objects of the old-fafihioned draw ins-room, with a sort of wonder at the contrast between a eertala ¡ homeiy charm the room had and the tuv- j. canny fascination of the mistress. Thrusting down the ugly thoughts which would rise in her mind, Jane hastened to take advantage of the gentler, milder cone in Iúa. ¡ Oavel's voice. She would try to establish sympathetic bond between this weird woman and hereelf, and to do so she most stifle her own vague suspicions. Edging quickly from her seat, therefore, jano crossed the room and said tn a low voioe, close to Mrs. Cavel's ear; Have you found your little boy yeW* (To be oontlnuedj
