SHORT STORY.
SHORT STORY. A Friend of the Family. "Ah! Major Protheroe." exclaimed Mrs. Brigham, as a handsome middle-aged man entered the room, "Uis Is indeed kind." I only received your telegram at the Club an hour ago," observed the Major, and I came on at once." "I didn't know who to send to toot you." cried Mrs. Brigham. What is the trouble ?" inquired Protheroe, seating himself with the assurance of a friend of the family, which, indeed, he was, having been executor of the captain's will, and the adviser in general to his widow since the death. "Oh, it is dreadful!" replied Mrs. Brigham. It is that poor, dear boy of mine, Major Protheroe, and now that I have lost the captain,he is all I have left, you know." "What has he been doing now?" asked the Major, with an emphasis on the now," that showed this was not the first occasion on which he had been consulted respecting the young gentleman in question. "He hasn't done anything yet, Major," answered the mother, with a catch in her voice, but he-he wents to get married." "The deuce he does!" exclaimed Major Protheroe ia surprise. "Who is the lady?" Oh, an impossible woman, Major. She is actually "-Mrs. Brighazn's voice sank to a horrified whiffper-" a professional singer!" Have you spoken to Harold?" He is simply infatuated," answered Mrs. Brigham. He told me that he was of age, and should please himself, and if I did not like it I could do the other thing. Oh, Major! cannot you see the designing creature, and bring bar to reason-just to save my poor boy?" He hesitated a moment, and then replied— Well, if you'll let me have the lady's name and address, I will see what I can do." Mrs. Brigham handed him a strip of paper, on which was inscribed, Miss Leila Bomilly, 20; Vinolia Mansions, Earl's Court." On his arrival -at Vinolia Mansions, the Major discovered that No. 20 was the top fiat, and.Jtm.vmg climbed the necessary flights of gtaira,„Jte was informed by the neatly- dressed servant who opened the door that I Miss Romilly was at hoine, and was shown into a small but artistically furnished draw- ing room, which opened on to a little balcony. I When he was left alone the Major commenced inspecting the photographs which ornamented the mantelpiece, for curiosity is not a vice which is entirely monopolised by women, and at the same time he was thinking over his line of attack. I In the first place, though he did not place much reliance upon it, he intended to plead the cause of the widowed mother. Assuming that this had no effect, and naturally it would not have with the sort of woman that Protheroe guessed Miss Romilly to be, then the Major meant to bring up his cavalry, in the shape of the. young man's character, for, although Harold Brigham was not twenty-two, he had already earned himself an unenviable reputation. Finally, in the event of this young lady still proving obdurate, he would produce his reserves, and let her know that, if Harold married against his mother's consent, Mrs. Brigham had the power of leaving her money away from him, which, in the circumstances, there was bnt little doubt was the course she would pursue. He was just thinking if there was anything else he could bring to bear upon her, when he caught sight of a well-known face among the photographs in front of him. It was that of dear old Charlie Roberts. His favourite >- playmate as a child, his chum at scnool, and his friend at Sandhurst, Protheroe had been his best man when he married the penniless daughter oi a half-pay officer, and had supported him when he breathed his la-st, with a Zulu's assegai thrust through him. His eyes were misty with unshed tears as he carried the portrait over to the window to gaze once more upon hia old friend's features. Just then the door opened, and a woman entered the room. And such a woman! Expecting to meet an artificial, made-up, professional lady, the Major was for a moment rendered speechless by the vision of beauty which he saw before him. A small, well-shaped head, crowned with a wreath of purest golden hair, which even Protheroe could tell was innooent of peroxide, a transparent complexion, perfect teeth, and Irish blue eyes, made up a tout ensemble which, clothed in soft white crepon trimmed with cornflower-blue ribbon, would have upset the equanimity of a more hardened man of the world than the Major. She bent her head gracefully as she advanced towards him, and in a soft, sweet voice inquired, as she looked at his card to refresh her memory,—" To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit—er—Major Protheroe. Ah! I see you have my father's photograph." To say that the Major was dumbfoundered is but to ill-express the state of mind that be was in. One who had expected to find himself in the realms of Pluto, and had awakened in the Elysian Fields instead, could not have been more agreeably surprised. W*hat?" he stammered, as he stretched out his hand. "What? You—you—Charlie Roberts's little girl? Then, surely, you have heard the name of Jack Protheroe?" Heard his name?" repeated the beautiful girl, her eyes glistening and her cheeks flushing with excitement. Oh, yes, yes! and many and many a time have I prayed that I might some day meet him. to thank him for his kindness to my dear, dear father." "I am Jack Protheroe," said the Major, modestly. "But you have nothing to thank me for, I can assure you." "Do you call it nothing to risk your life for your friend?" murmured Leila. Though wounded yourself, to carry him off the field of battle, where the fierce Zulus were stabbing all with whom they came in contact—to bear him to a place of safety, where he could give you his dying messages for his loved ones at home, and breathe his last peacefully in your arms! If you call it nothing, I do not, and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for it." As she spoke, she ptaced her little hands in his, and looked up into his face with such a frank, innocent, trustful gaze that Jack Protheroe felt tiight be a daughter of his own. and. gently touching her orown of aureate hair with his lips, softly whispered— "God bless and protect you, little girl!" At this very moment the particular Mephis- topheles who looks after this sort of business arranged that the servant, who, of course, was unaware that anything out of the ordinary was taking place, should open the door and admit Mr. Harold Brigham. For a few momenta Brigham was too much astonished to speak, but by. the time the actors in the previous scene turned towards him he managed to explain— What! Major Protheroe I What on earth are you doing here?" I might ask you the same question, Harold." replied the Major, who was so softened by the recollections of the past that he overlooked the insolence of the young man's tone and manner. But this only aggravated Harold the more, and his somewhat effeminate countenance was rendered repulsive by the passion welling up within him. "If I ask you a question, I expect you to answer it," he observed rudely. Leila, noticing that the Major's brow was contracting, thought it wiser to come to the rescue, and she intervened by saying— Major Protheroe is a very old and very, dear friend of my family, Mr. Brigham." Harold was obliged to accept this explana- tion. but the sullen look on his face showed that he was far from feeling satisfied, and after a few minutes' silence he remarked— "Well, as I am evidently not wanted. 111 say goodbye." Then, in spite of a polite remonstrance from Leila, he shook hands with her, with an ill grace, and. nodding to Protheroe, took himself off. I am 80 sorry oonrmsnoed the Major. "Pray d- mr o word." taterravtM^ Leila, you've nothing to be sorry for. It was not your fault." I hope it won't lead to any trouble," remarked Protheroe, thinking of the infinite possibilities of a lover#' quarrel. I hope not," replied Leila, a little anxiously, but Kr. Brigham has a very funny temper." He has, indeed," agreed the Major, :.Mtd.' then he could have bitten his tongue outlNK' saying it. For the Major found himself in a very, peculiar position. He was like Balaam of old. He had come out to curse, and he remained to bless. Of course, it was a thousand pities that this lovely girl should be thrown away upon such an uttely worthless scoundrel as Harold Brigham, but if she loved him, and her happiness depended upon a union With him. Well, her wishes would be paramount and she should have him, if he had to stand guard over Mrs. Brigham while they were being married. The conversation was then turned into more general channels, and the Major ascertained that Leila Romilly, or Roberts, to give her her right name, was a concert- singer, but that she had been unable to ginir for some time, on account of a slight affection of the throat. Then, promising to call the following day, the Major took his leave. < But though he left Leila in the body behind him, he carried her with him in the spirit; j and all day, and all night, too, for that matter, the sheen of the golden hair was, before his eyes, and the soft, caressing .touch of that perfect little hand continued to vibrate his nerves, and make his blood flow in a manner qaite novel to the man about town. The following day Protheroe again called at Vinolia. Mansions. Leila, who was standing, by the window, turned to greet him with a. sunny smile. After some conversation on various subjects, he said- I want to speak to you, Miss Roberts. It is rather a delicate matter, but, as an old friend of the family, I feel sure you will pardon the liberty which I am taking. "It is about young Brigham," proceeded the Major, hesitating how to express himself. I suppose the matter between you—er—er. the arrangement, has gone too far to be—er —set aside or broken off now?" "Oh, yes!" replied Leila, calmly. "It was all settled some weeks ago." The Major sighed, and then, noticing that his young hostess was looking at him with some amount of curiosity, he said- I hope you will excuse me, but I can assure you that I only asked in your interests." I feel sure of that, Major Protheroe." answered Leila.; but it is too late now for any one to interfere." The Major went, away that afternoon thoroughly miserable, and also thoroughly in love. If he had been wise, he would hare left London at once and gone to Australia or the North Pole; but, being an ordinary, every- day, sort of man, really and genuinely in, love for the first time in his life, he followed the example of the male moth, and fluttered round his electric light as frequently as he could possibly invent excuses; and when a. man is in love he is generally an adept at excuses. This state of things continued for a. month. Protheroe seeing Leila frequently, when one. afternoon, as he walked in with a bouquet of flowers, he found her crying quietly. "Miss Roberts, Leila, what is the matter?"' inquired the Major, hurrying forward. Has anything gone wrong? What is it? Confide in me, and, for Heaven's sake, don't cry like that. It breaks my heart to see you." It's—that—Mr. Brigham," replied Leila, endeavouring to control her sobs. What has the little cad been doing now?" asked Protheroe, through his clenched teeth., Why, he says that I must either marry; him or else pay him back the whole of the money. "Don't you want to marry him, then!" cried Protheroe, with a strange feeling of joy beating away at his heart. "What! marry him!" exclaimed Leila. "Oh, Major Protheroe!" But I. don't understand," said th* perplexed Major. I thought you were engaged to him. I asked you some wooko ago, and-" Why, I thought you were speaking about our business arrangements, and that you knew all about it," replied Leila, a smile breaking through her tears. You see, when mamma died. she left me in debt, and I accepted an offer to sing in concerts, think- í ing that I should be able to pay everyone and keep myself. Then this throat trouble came on, and the doctor told me I must not sing for at least six months, and, amspu may! imagine, I didn't know what to do. In the midst of my trouble Mr. Brigham was introduced to me, and offered to lend me whatever money I wanted, if I would sign certain papers as a matter of form. Well, I jumped at it. Of course, it was silly of me., and now it appears the money is due, and if I don't marry him-and I would rather die than do that-he says he has the power to sell me up, and take all my poor little treasures." How much is it ?" inquired Protheroe.. eagerly, as he drew a cheque book from his pocket. "How good and kind you are," said Leila; but it is impossible. I cannot accept money from a stranger-at least. I don't mean & stranger, but from anyone who is xxot a' relation-" There is only one way out of it. Leila, 1J observed the Major, as he shifted his chair, so that he could place his arm round her. Let me become a. relation; be my wife. darling? I have loved you since the first moment I saw you, and I have been eating I my heart out night and day, thinking you, were going to marry that insufferable little cad-" Hush, dear," cried Leila, placing her little pink hand over his lips. Don't forget that you are a friend of the family."
