FACT S concerning FOOD TAXATION. THE FOOD TAXES the Digestive Organs when you wake with head and eyes heavy and dull; when a coated tongue is found upon rising; when meal time comes and finds you with no appetite; when the food taken is not assimilated, or when a sick or bilious headache occurs at intervals. THE SUBJECT IS NOW RIPE FOR ENQUIRY as to the best means for counteracting these symptoms, but the fact cannot be gainsaid that Thousands of sufferers have given BEECHAM'S PILLS the preference in removing such taxation. On the broad question of protection this is such a safe plan that all wage-earners, and others, .should consider that to provide their homes with a box of BEECHAM'S PILLS is A WISE DUTY. I"TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of "Robert Miner, Anarchist," "Stafford, a Romance," Sbo. PART THE FOURTH. I Lifting the Veil. CHAPTER I.-Continued. I Father and Daughter. "Lilian," he went on, I've told him the story; let him tell it you-I cannot. I will go out and take a stroll and smoke my pipe." Then he drew Herbert a little on one side, and said in a low voice, Deal with her as gently as you can, for she was Lilian's mother. Herbert pressed his hand in response, and Vanstone went out of the room, greatly relieved at having delegated the painful task to another. But Herbert soon discovered that Lilian was determined to know the whole truth, and would not be put off with half-confidences. Her keen intellect in a moment detected a prevarication, for, as has been said before, no one could look her in the face and lie to her. Nor had Herbert any inclination to shield the false wife behind the much-injured husband. When Vanstone returned, which was not for a long time, he found Lilian aJone and in tears. She went to him and threw her arms round his neck, and kissing him, murmured My dear, dear father." He understood what she meant by those words. "Don't be too hard upon her; she was your mother," he whispered huskily. We will never speak of those things again," she answered quietly. I had quite made up my mind that you should never know of my existence," he said presently. I longed to see you once, that I might carry your image in my heart, and then go out of your life for ever." It was a very cruel resolve," she retorted gravely. But see what I am," he cried passion- ately; "a beggar, a-" Hush," she interrupted, putting her hand over his mouth, "you are my dear father; whatever you may be it is not by any fault of your own; your life has been ruined by another." she added, in answer to a depre- cating look, but in heart you are still good and true and noble." "God bless you, dear, for those words; it has lifted a load of degradation off me. I feel a man again." And to prove it he laid his arms upon the table and, sinking his face upon them, sobbed aloud. And Lilian knelt down at his feet, and put her arms around him, and drew his head upon her bosom. And it seemed to Harry Vanstone that all the sufferings of nearly a quarter of a century were compensated by that moment of supreme happiness. "Father," said Lilian suddenly, there is one question I must ask you. Did you or- my mother-make a provision for me? I have been receiving, ever since I was fifteen, a hundred a year that Aunt Rose told me was left by my parents." Vanstone shook his head. "I did not know of your existence until yesterday, and I do not think, indeed, I am sure, your mother had not the meaap of doing so." Lilian," he added, after a little thought, depend upon it, it is Rose who has done this out of her own means." You believe so ? "I feel sure of it." How ungrateful I have been to her." Oh, those coals of fire, those coals of fire, how they scorch he murmured sadly. "And I have judged her so wrongly. I can never forgive myself," said Lilian. When Herbert returned to the room the three took council together as to their move- ments in the immediate future. Lilian said that she could not do or think of anything until she had seen her aunt; eo it was arranged that she should go back to Ferncombe in the morning, and that the length of her stay there would depend upon circumstances. And now it was Herbert's turn. He had been so completely absorbed by the astounding surprises and revelations which affected Lilian that everything else had been put out of his head. But the conversation now turned upon the attempted assassination —the second to which Herbert had been ex- posed by the hands of this desperado, Dick Weston, alias Jasper Roydon, and in whom Lilian expressed herself to be quite certain that she recognised the man who was in the box with Agatha at the Lyceum. What could be the motives for such a desperate crime? They must be very power- ful. And who was this treble personality? Herbert related to Vanstone the meeting with Weston at the railway station, the con- versation, as far as he could remember it, that took place in the train, and what followed. I believe that Lilian is right in identifying him with the man whom we saw with Agatha. The face seemed to be familiar to me, but with a difference: it was the absence of the beard that Weston always wore; this would connect him with Lilian Griceson-good God is it possible that he could have been the man with whom she went away-the murderer of Mr. Griceson ? Such a series of coincidences seemed to be widely improbable, but there was certainly a chain of circumstantial evidence that linked all the events together. Weston, on that fatal night, was going to Tanbridge Wells when they met. Again, there were Lilian's suspicions that Agatha was connected with the outrage in River Lane, and was con- cealed in Mrs. Fennell's house when he, Herbert, came to it. But the motive, the motive?" exclaimed Herbert; there must be an overwhelmingly strong motive to account for a murder and three during attempts at another." "I remember now," said Vanstone musingly, "that when Roydon was in his cups he used to brag about his ancient family, and that he would be a baronet one day. I never took any notice of his bounce at the time, and had quite forgotten all about it until now. The papers relating to yourself were the only thing missing-might not those have been the motive for the murder? "Herbert," cried Van- stone, starting up, this man is some usurper of your rights. I see it all. This matter must be investigated at once. Let us be off to Lon- don to-morrow morning, and put the matter in the hands of the police. Of course, you must start with the attempt upon your life on Dartmoor to-day, connecting it with the assault in the railway carriage, while I will join my experiences to your testimony. But we will say nothing about the third man at present, or our suspicions about the murder; we musn't try to prove too much at first." "Would it not also be as well to write to the Exeter police? He might be lurking about the county," suggested Lilian. Certainly," acquiesced Vanstone; not that it is in the least probable that he will remain in the neighbourhood after being recognised." Herbert at one* wrote. » tetter describing i what had befallen him upon Dartmoor, to* gether with a description of the man and his disguise. As the post was gone for the night. it was arranged that it should be despatched bv the first train in the morning. "If I had been asked to give an opinion as to the relatione which existed between Miss Griceson and her companion, I should have said most probably husband and wife," ob- served Lilian when this matter had been settled. "They were certainly on very inti- mate terms "But that would negative our theory that, he was the undoer of poor Lilian Griceson and the murderer of her father," objected Her- bert. "True, true; that would be too terrible to think of," cried Miss Vanstone, hastily. "I wish we knew where to find this lady; to find her might give us a clue to him," said Vanstone, musingly. "I wonder if we could get any information* about her by going to Sandlands," suggestecl- Herbert. "She may have returned there, though I don't think it likely; but we may, hear something. You, Mr. Vanstone, are all utter stranger, and could make the inquiries without exciting attention." That's a good idea, Herbert, and we'll act; upon it," said Vanstone, "and before we go to the police." The tihree left Bovey Tracey by a very early; train the next morning; Lilian got out at Newton Abbot, while the two men went on to Exeter to catch the express to London. I CHAPTER II. In Mr. Isaac Johnson's Office. Mr. Isaac Johnson, although still connected with the firm of Messrs. Green and Fulby, carried on business on his own account in a dingy little office adjoining their large offices, in one of the dingiest blocks in Gray's Inn. Green and Fulby were what is called » highly respectable firm of solicitors. They had a reputation to keep up; therefore, when they had any shady business on hand, they found it very convenient to have a sharp prac- titioner like Mr. Isaac Johnson, who was daring and unscrupulous in his methods, to fall back upon; one who would take the whole onus upon himself, under secret guarantees, of anything disagreeable or not altogether comme il faut that resulted from his methods. On the afternoon of the eventful day on. which I closed the third part of this narrative., Mr. Johnson was seated before his desk in his dingy den, into which only a twilight ever strayed from the heavens, and where gas WM indispensable througholit the day both in summer and winter, pondering over soiue folios tttat, to judge by the faded look of the ink, had been written many years. No. 1 began: "I Dorothea Lady Marston nee Dysart wife of Sir Uriah Marston, Bart., now lying at the point of death do hereby declare that these: following are my last wishes and instruo tions," etc., etc. This was the document concerning which, Mr. Johnson had made his visit to MarsUm Hall. v Messrs. Green and Fulby had sent Johnson to Oape Town, in the interests of a client, to trace a certain young scapegrace, who, after committing forgery and robbery, had bolted off to South Africa; the police were after him, and to endeavour to baffle them, and get him clean off to some country with which we have no extradition treaty, was the object of Mr. Johnson's journey. This business brought the agent into com- munication, direct and indirect, with a great number of shady individuals; and he gathered a good deal of biographical data of these black sheep, which he thought might be turned to good account when he returned to England. While he was at Kimberley, the private detective who was assisting him in his search pointed out a notorious desperado named Dick Weston. "That chap's about as bad as you make 'em," said his informant; "he boasts that there is only one life stands between him and the succession to a baronetcy, and that he's now on the look-out for it. And God help the life if he comes across it." (To be continued).
I LOOKING AHEAD.
LOOKING AHEAD. "I have been thinking." remarked a thoughtful looking man to a ohalee acquaintance—"I have been thinking what I &hall put my boy to when he is old emoogh. "At present I am a little uncertain whether it would not be wise to let him finiabl his education in Germany, so tjU he 3nighlb have the advantage of a continental train- ing and the chances of acquiring anotitexf language besides his own. Otherwise I should, probably send him to some technical school here, for I am a great believer in handicrafts. My wife talks of giving him a university edu- cation, but I don't know. It rather unfits &A, fellow for anything but a professional career, and they say that all the professions ar^ overcrowded." The other man agreed. "Better let him learn a good trade," ha said; "electrical engineering or somLethtng of that kind. But, by the way, how old is he?" "Well," replied the anxious parent, 'Tat looking ahead a little, of course-he's threq months old to-day." "Your first, I suppose." "Ye-es." "I thought so," said the other mam as btt waJked off with a superior simile.
