I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," Stafford, a Romance," &0. PART THE THIRD. 1 Within the Shadow of Death. CHAPTER IX.-Continued On the Brink of the Torrent. "I have had such a ghastly dream," she said, shivering; "I thought my own self was looking at me as I lay asleep, and the face was that of the dead. Wasn't it horrible?" And she nestled in his arms. "I woke up in fright, too," he said; "I expect our hearty meal and the heat gave us nightmare. We had better get on; I don't much like the look of the sky. I should think we are quite half way." Oh, dear, the world seems to have changed since I fell asleep," she said; "it was all joy and now it is all sadness." They started at a, quick pace, though no longer with elastic tread, for there was a heaviness on their spirits, but then they had recently lunched, and the air was charged with electricity. The grey gloom deepened, veiling the distances; the growl and reverberation of distant thunder stirred the death-like still- ness of the air. They were on very high ground that commanded glimpses of the eea, but a heavy, thick curtain hung between sea and land, obscuring all beyond. Denver was becoming very much alarmed, not on his own account but on Lilian's; Miss Vanstone, however, was not timid, and though she looked a little pale she showed no signs of fear. Suddenly a lurid flash of forked light- ning darted through the murk of the sky, followed by a peal of thunder that rolled, rumbled, and reverberated in a dozen echoes, and large drops of rain began to fall. Denver, while they hurried on, cast anxious glances around in search of some shelter, however slight; but he dared not venture beneath the trees of the ravine. Presently the ground sloped downwards to a huge mass of rocks piled one on another in wild con- fusion, as though they had fallen there and sunk into the ground and into each other in the battle of the Titans; over one side of these rocks a mountain river, rushing, tumb- ling, foaming, precipitated itself in a roar- ing torrent down some hundred feet, forming a deep pool at the base, and then tearing away with redoubled force through a deep channel it had worn for itself among ferns and undergrowth and; thick woods. The chasm stopped the path; they looked round, but in the increasing gloom could not per- ceive any outlet. Suddenly Lilian uttered a loud scream; slightly turning her head she had caught sight of a. man advancing, crouching with a knife in his hand. He was close behind Denver, who, starting aside at her cry, thus avoided the blow aimed at him; but before he could recover the man had grappled with him. Though he had greatly recovered strength during the paet fortnight, Denver was by no means in full vigour, and felt in a moment that he was no match for his hunch-backed assailant, who, winding his arms about him, was evidently bent upon hurling the young man over the rocks. Shriek upon shriek burst from Lilian's lips; she tried to grasp at the man's clothes to drag him back, but aa fast as she caught a hold the fierce move- ment of the wrestlers tore it from her weak fingers. A blinding flash of lightning that hung like linked chains in the heavens, followed by an awful crash of thunder and almost the dark- ness of night, for a moment paralysed both the wrestlers; the knife, gleaming blue in the flash, dropped from the assailant's hand, and, without relaxing their deadly lock, they remained poised as though turned to stone. Quick as thought, Lilian picked up the knife, and, frenzied by the peril of her lover, struck at the man with it; it penetrated his right arm, not to any depth, but the smart was sufficient to weaken his grip and to give a slight relief to his opponent. As the rain burst down in a, deluge the heavens became lighter. The struggle was renewed, and Marston's hat and wig fell off, leaving him bearded. Thus he was the image of the man Denver had known in the mines; he recognised him in a. moment. I know yon—Weston—villain he gasped. As he was speaking the beard was wrenched off by another movement, and in the now hairless face Lilian was horrified at recog- nising that of the man whom she had seen with Agatha Griceson at the Lyceum. In his momentary relief Denver had contrived to push a little way back from the edge of the abyss, but with horrible oaths Marston was again dragging him to the brink with irresistible force. Strike, Lilian, strike, for God's sake, or I am a dead man," shouted Denver. The roar of the water, increased in volume by the rain, almost drowned his voice. Lilian heard the words, but Marston, who now had his almost-fainting victim completely at his mercy, slewed round so that Denver was in front, and she dared not strike for fear of wounding him. Again the wrestlers were on the brink, and Weston, lifting Denver bodily in his arms, was about to hurl him over the torrent when Lilian stabbed him in the leg. With a cry he staggered and fell back upon the ground, but still holding on to his prey with the tenacity of an octopus, Denver being underneath him. Still madly screaming Lilian tried to grapple with the assassin; but at that moment she saw a man clambering up the rocks on the further side of the torrent. They were slippery with the rain, but though an elderly man he was an expert climber; grasping every twig that grew between the interstices of the stones he made rapid progress; as he neared the top he shouted: Roydon, you devil, I have you at last." At the sound of that voice Marston sprang to his feet and looked in the direction whence it came, his face full of terror. One glance sufficed; spurning Denver, who was too exhausted to move, with his foot, intending to hurl him over the brink, he turned and fled. Denver rolled, clutching at the grass, until he hung over the abyss, and it was only Lilian casting herself right across his breast that checked the momentum and arrested his fall. With oaths and cries of rage Vanstone struggled to the top, and gave pursuit; but his legs were already exhausted by his climb. Marston turned and fired off the six chambers of his revolver; all the time increasing the distance between himself and his pursuer, who threw himself upon his face and escaped without a scratch. Giving up the chase as hopeless, Vanstone turned round and was chilled with horror as he saw the young man's feet hanging over the chasm, the woman prostrate across him, her dress fluttering over tile brink. The slightest movement might precipitate both a hundred feet below. With one hand he raised the woman and with the other droned back the man. Both had fainted. As he raised her in his arms Vanstone ejaculated: "My God, Lilian! Lilian!" He stood transfixed as the livid glare of the lightning played over the white face, and the thunder burst like a discharge of artillery over their heads. And I have saved her from an awful death -my God, I thank Thee!" and he bowed hit bare head before the swirling rain. "The image of her mother! It is my Lilian, Lilian, as when I first knew her-ch. my darling, my darling!" And he pressed a kiss upon her cold brow. "Who are yon-what does this mean?" ex- claimed an angry voice at his side. It was Denver who had staggered to his feet. She is my child, my daughter, my Lilian, I am her father, Harry Vanstone. And who are you?" END OF PAJRT THE THIRD. PART THE FOURTH. Lifting the Veil. CHAPTER I. Father and Daughter o For a while the three who had met so strangely on the wild moor in thunder. lightning, and in rain," dazed, bewildered by the rencontre, remained exposed to all the fury of the warring elements. The storm ceased all of a sudden, as though Jove had exhausted the thunderbolts of Olympus and the sluices of heaven had run dry. A deep silence fell upon the empyrean, but, below, the water rushed and roared deafeningly, like the voice of the storm dempn bellowing for more destruction. But the murky gloom was quickly melting, and soon a shaft of hot sunlight darted from a strip of blue that widened every instant. Herbert was now able to consult his map and compass, and discovered that they were not more than two miles from Bovey Tracey. In their saturated condition, their clothea heavy with water, even that short distance was formidable. Herbert had only just recovered from a severe illness, but he thought nothing of himself, only of Lilian. She bore up bravely, however, and within the hour they were enclosed in the good old inn of Bovey Tracey. Lillian went to bed, and the two men borrowed some clothes while their own were being dried. Vanstone tried hard to induce his companion to follow Lilian's example, but his mind was too excited by the perilous adventures that he had gone through, and the extraordinary meeting with Lilian's father, to be able to take repose. Straightforwardly he acquainted Vanstone with the relations which existed between him and Lilian, and his own position in life. The elder man listened silently, but with a keen look in his eyes that told he was weigh- ing the man rather than his words. I have no right to interfere in my, daughter's affairs," he said, when Herbert had finished; "nor should I do so in this case, for I like you. I think you are a genuine man and really love her." And he gave his hand to the young man, who pressed it gratefully. Lilian will be sure to want to hear the story of my life," he said after a silence. It is a very painful one; would to God I could keep it from her-I am sure I shall never have the courage to tell it her. You shall hear it that you may judge for your- self. And so at last Herbert understood the mystery of the likeness of Lilian Vanstone to Lilian Griceson, and found the explanation to be almost more amazing than the mystery. The two men sat talking over the story, forgetful of everything else, until Lilian came down to dinner. She looked rather pale and wearied, but protested that by the next morning she would be quite recovered from the effects or her adventure. "Oh, I am not at all delicate," she cried; I'm a thorough country girl, used to rain and sun, and wind and fatigue, and 4t at all liable to take cold. Of course, my nerves are a little shaken," she added with a shiver. "I trust in God you will take no harm, my darling," said her father, clasping both her hands in his, and gazing at her eyes brimming over with love. After dinner Lilian declared that she felt very much better. » "And now, my father "-Herbert coald aee that every fibre of the man responded to that name, so softly and sweetly breathed by his child-" you must tell me why I have been deceived about you, and told that you were dead-and about my mother-is she, too. still living?" No," he answered in a low voice, and turning aside his head; "she is dead years and years ago." You loved her-very much," said Lilian. softly stealing her hand into his. No man ever loved woman more dearly," he answered. I wish you would not ask me to tell the story; it is very painful; it will be very: painful to you—even your aunt has thought- it best to conceal it from you." I "It pains me very much to hear you say, so, father, but I must ask the sacrifice; I have a right to know." She spoke sympatheti- cally but very firmly. You have," he replied reluctantly, but my lips can never speak to the child the words that will condemn the mother. Herbert has told me you and he are engaged. I hopa he is worthy of you; I believe he is." Lilian placed one of her hands within Herbert's and said, I fully trust him. and so will you when you know him better." And! she gazed into her lover's eyes with a look full of calm, sweet confidence. I am not worthy of her, sir, replied Herbert, raising the white hand to his lips and kissing it fervently. "As I told you, I am a nameless man-" Damn the name, sir," broke out Vanstone; if you will always love her and cherish her, and keep her in your inmost heart. I don't- care a straw whether you are Tom Nokea or Jack Stiles-you are the man for JIl.Y. child," and he wrung the young fellow's fingers until they cracked. (To be continued). M
