I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," I- I By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," Stafford, a Romance," &0. PART THE THIRD. I Within the Shadow of Death. CHAPTER VI.-Continued. Mr. Isaac Johnson Tells a Startling I Story. [ Mr. Johnson had delivered this long speech in the deliberate legal montone. without em- phasising a single word, and with his eyes fixed upon the opposite wall, though Marston felt certain that not the least shade of ex- pression that passed over his own face was lost to those keen, black eyes. By a great effort he was able to preserve a perfect impassivity of countenance, though he could feel the perspiration rising through every pore, and his mouth and tongue growing hot and dry. But he, nevertheless, continued to speak quite calmly. "And what is all this to me, sir; what have I to do with Mr. Griceson and Mr. Herbert, and all those people of whom I have never heard before? In a moment the glittering black eyee flashed upon him like lightning. "Come, come, Mr. Weston-" Marston started, and the swarthy cheeks paled; that last thrust had stripped off the mask. I beg your pardon, I mean Mr. Marston, but you are so like a man of that name who was pointed out to me at Kimberley as one of the worst desperadoes at the mines, though he wore a beard." Why do you call me Mr. Marston? I am "ir Aaron-" You are not nearly as bold or as clever a man as I took you for, from the stories I heard about your little games in the Cape. Ah, how foolish I am in again confounding you with that man Weston. But you have no more right to be called Sir Aaron than I have to be styled Sir Isaac." "You insolent hound, apologise, or I'll throw you out of the window—I'll break you across my knee," cried Marston, his face crimson with passion. One word of warning, sir," said the little lawyer, without flinching, "my colleague knows my destination and my business here; if I am not back in London to-night he will telegraph to the local police to make in- quiries about me, and in the morning he will be at Marston Hall himself. Now sit down quietly and I'll tell you a story, some part of it is known to you already, but I don't think all." Marston felt that it would be the wisest course to listen to all this man had to say. and he repressed the devil of murder that always raged in his soul against those who would thwart him. The dour look of the Marstons was in his eye and upon his brow, as he sat like a chained tiger, while the lawyer, leaning back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other and joining the tips of his fingers, commenced his narrative. About thirty yeaxs ago two gentlemen, William Griceson, Esq., and Sir Uriah Mars- ton, felt- iR -iove lally. Minn Ikvrothoa Dysart; her preference was given to William Griceson, that of her parents, Who were poor, I to Sir Uriah, he being the richer man. The parents won the day, and Miss Dysart became Lilian Marston; but her love was still given to William Griceson. It sounds very like one of Mudie's novels, doesn't it? but every word of this story is true. Sir Uriah soon discovered that his lady did not care about him. guessed the reason, and ill-treated her. One day when she was in a delicate situation, he struck be- to the ground. In the middle of the night she escaped from Marston Hall, travelled south as far as Tunbridge Wells, and wrote to William Griceson at Sandlands to come to her. She was a high-spirited woman, and, maddened by the cruelty and degradation she had suffered from her husband, she threw herself upon her old lover's protection. With- in forty-eight hours a son was born and the mother was dead. "But not before Mr. Goodenough had taken down certain depositions, witnessed by the doctor and other persons, in order that the identity of the infant should be established beyond dispute. Lady Marston further induced. Mr. WiEiam-Griceeon to take a solemn promise that he would act as the child's guardian, that he would oonceal its birth from Sir Uriah, and bring him up in ignorance of his name and family until he had attained his twenty-fifth, birthday. 'Under his father's influence,' she said in her statement, he would grow up to be a cruel, black-hearted hypocrite, like all the rest of the Marstons. I would save him from such a fate. I could not rest in my grave if I thought he would grow up like his father. Better even that he should forfeit his heritage,' and a good deal more to that effect. This was, of course, all very irregular, and Mr. Goodenough made his protest against against it, but Mr. Griceson would not allow the lady to be gainsaid. After Lady Marston was buried, Mr. William Griceson came here to the hall to tell Sir Uriah of his wife's death, challenged him to a duel; and when Sir Uriah refused, and called his laAe wife by an opprobrious name, Mr. Griceson flogged him. Sir Uriah fell into ill-health, never married again, and died without knowing he had a son and heir living, and, strange to say, on the night before Mr. Griceson's murder. You, failing a direct heir, as the only son of the baronet's brother, were next of kin; you had just returned from South Africa, just in the nick of time, and-here you are. Well, and where are these precious papers now?" demanded Marston with a sneering laugh. Somebody stole Mr. Griceson's copy." What do you mean by Mr. Griceson's copy?" I mean that there was a duplicate copy, with which are the original memoranda." responded Johnson coolly. "You lie, you pettifogging rogue, you lie!" cried Marston fiercely. If you challenge me to show them you will find I do not lie." Show them, then." Do you suppose that I have brought them with me?" retorted the lawyer with a provoking smile. Marston glared at him like a tiger at bay for some seconds; then he sttid between his clenched teeth: You have come here with this trumped-up story about a direct heir thinking to extort money out of me. But you'll not get one penny. I defy you, do you hear, I defy you; and if you are not out of this house in two minutes I'll take you by the scruff of the neck and hurl you into the tarn." As I know you to be quite capable of executing your threat, I will do as you bid me," said Johnson, rising quickly. But let me tell you that my object in coming here was not to extort money, nor should I have accepted any if you had offered it." No, the grapes are sour, you dirty fox, off with you before I set the dogs on your ^trail." < Mr. Johnson was gone before the last wordl were spoken. As he came out suddenly he just caught thft flutter of a black dress disappearing along that passage. Ah, an eavesdropper," he said to hiniself. there has been a witness to our conversation. —looked like the dress of the woman who admitted me, so mpch the better." The conveyance that had brought him Up to the Hall was still waiting, and two or three minutes afterwards he was being driven away. When his ill-omened visitor had departed Marston remained standing in the centre of the room, grasping the back of a chair with. as vicious an energy as if it had been the throat of his enemy; his face was grey, hit eyes were bloodshot, his lips quivering, a very incarnation of brute rage. That man knows something of the African time," he muttered. Curse him, why didn't I throttle him, trample him into offal? What does he not know or suspect? I must have. been mad to let him go. A duplicate copy— and the original memoranda- still in ens- tencel" Too door opened, and Agatha's wilite. anxious face appeared; she had seen the visitor depart, and was eager to know what his business had been. One glance at bee husband's face told her that it was bad. "Come in and shut the door," he said. Then he briefly related to her what had passed in the interview. My God she cried, clasping her hands, "all will be discovered. The shadow of this, has been upon me ever since I entered this: horrible house. Give up this fatal heritage, let us go abroad to one of the South American. Republics, where they can't touch us. Take- all the money out of the bank-I will do the same; between us we can't have less thaa- twenty thousand; no one can take Sandlanda from me; there is an income-" "And let that bastard hound that I so triumph over me?" be cried furiously, "not if I swing for it." "Then why did you not bribe this Johnson to give up the papers ? Then you would have been safe-what am I saying, as if- encompassed as we were by dangers on every, sJie, we can ever be safe." Perhaps Marston, now as it was too la4«. half regretted he had not tried to come to terms with the lawyer; but he was a man of ungovernable temper that could never brook contradiction, and the lawless life be bad led. had so inured him to take the law into his own hands that he would never be able to bend to the exigencies of civilised life. And be dependent upon the breath of a fellow like that, be his slave, his jackal! No. I could not endure that-I should strangle him within a month. I am not to be baited by vermin." He took down a railway time-table, and ran his e..w down the up trains. Good," he said; "he cannot leave for lorldm until 2.30. It is now a little after- twelve,- -I -have plenty of time to get to. Ulverstone and travel up by the same train. as Mr. Isaac Johnson." What do you intend to do—no more blood- shed. Oh. Aaron, no more bloodshed, for blood will hava blood,' cried Agatha. I will answer you from the same play. Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest church, till you applaud the deed. ha answered sardonica-Ily. "I cannot tell you what shall I do; I shall be guided by circumstances, by opportunity. But I hope. when you see me next that I shall be able to give you a good aocount of Sir Herbert Ma.rston." Agatha held out her hands in speechless entreaty. He seized them both in his vicious grill While that man lives I shall never know^-sv moment's rest. All my life I have had tbdo heritage dangling before my eyes, and my father before me. It was he who poisonwl Uriah's mind against his wife, for Uriah loved her, and when he heard of her death. and, as he supposed, the death of her child, he turned upon my father and me. forbade us ever to cross his threshold again? and he had promised to provide for me and. set me up for life, for my father was only a poor Baptist minister. So I went to the dogs. but as my uncle's health failed, and he did not marry again, the hope, the eertainty of succession, was always before me until five years ago, when I beard of the existence of this whelp. No man ever-had such a knock- down blow, but, as soon as I recovered from it. I swore that I would not be defrauded of my rights, that I would stop at nothing to pin. them; and do you think after what I have done already that I'll throw up the sponge and let him take the prize I've risked bodY, and soul for? No!" And he clenched the asseveration with an oath that sent a shudder through his wife's heart. I cannot remain in this house alone. and I will not," she said, I'll go to Sandlands. I have not been there since I left after—my uncle's death. There are certain things I want to see to and arrange before we go abroad." "What of the woman Fennell? If yoo. take her with you you would rouse the suspicions of the police. You must think of that—I most get away-mind what you are doing." She remained crouching in her chair, with her hands clasped in her lap and her head bowed upon her breast, for some time after he had left her, lost in bitter remorse and deadly fear. Marston went to his dressing-room and un- locked a box of which he always kept the key. The box contained wigs, beards, and an assort- ment of strange clothes. During his shady career he had been an adept in disguises, and, when his fortunes changed, he still kept them, on the principle that one never knows what one may want. Making a. selection, to which he added a long sheathed knife and a revolver, he stuffed alL into a Gladstone bag, together with a few toilette necessities, (To be continued).
