" TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of "Robert Miner, Anarchist," "Stafford, a Romance," &e. I CHAPTER V!—Continued. [ Dixon Speaks. "Poor Lilian!" ejaculated Denver. "Ah, yes, poor young lady, hers was a sad life. When she was about five the Squire's' brother died. He was a clergyman somewhere in the far north, and left a motherless child quite unprovided for. The child, Miss Agatha, was brought to the Hall, and the Squire at once took a fancy to her and adopted her. She was nearly two years older than Miss Lilian, and just the opposite to her, for Miss Lilian, a.s you know, was shy, and gentle, and timid, while her cousin was bright, wheed- j ling, audacious, and, as you know, could wind the Squire round her finger. But you know all about that as much as I do, sir." "I think I can see it all now," said Denver gloomily. "My mother was an old love of Mr. Griceson's, she had probably made a bad marriage, she came to him in some great emergency, and he took me out of charity—he delayed telling me this until he hoped I should have made a career for myself. Oh, yes, it is as clear as daylight. He always treated me coldly and distantly, like a dependant." But he wanted you to marry Miss Agatha., whom he made his heiress. You cost your mother her life, you know, and that might account for his coldness to you. There was a packet of papers in the Squire's safe endorsed, Papers relating to Herbert, to be opened on his twenty-fifth birthday.' I saw them not six months ago when he was looking for a lease." "Then what has become of those papers?" cried Denver, jumping up in his eagerness. That is what I can't understand. There is not a document missing except them, and nobody seems to know anything about 'em except me, not even the solicitor." You are certain you saw a packet bearing my name in the Squire's safe?" Quite." And they have vanished. Good heaven, this is terrible!" And Denver paced up and down the narrow space of the cottage in the wildest excite- ment. Do you remember any friend, any relation, ever coming to see me when I was a child?" L No one ever came to see you—that I know of," added Dixon hastily. But is there no way of solving this mystery; am I to remain in ignorance all my life? Oh, I shall go mad! Is there no one you can think of to whom he might have confided the secret?" Only one person probably ever knew it, the old family lawyer, Mr. Goodenough, who has been dead these ten years. The Squire gave no confidences; he relied only on himself." But did no Bon or partner of this Mr. Goodenough succeed to his business, who might have some memoranda, or that-" "I don't know; but at his death the Squire transferred his business to Mr. Russell of Tunbridge Wells; perhaps that might have been because it was more convenient. Mr. Goodenough's office in Bedford-row, London." I'll go there at once. But how, I've no money?" he cried. "Don't be offended, Master Herbert, at what I'm going to say," said Dixon apologetically, after a little silent consideration, "and 1 hope you won't hurt my feelings by refusing what I'm going to offer. I've made a good bit of money in the Squire's service, a good deal more than I can ever spend, I've neither chick nor child, nor anybody I particularly I care about leaving anything to, let me lend you fifty pounds, sir, so that you may have the means of looking about you and trying to find out things. You can pay me back any time. You'll be doing me a very great favour by accepting the loan." Denver's pride at first revolted against the offer; but his plight was so desperate; he could not move in any direction without money. In London he might hunt up one or I two old school chums, with whom he had kept up a friendship and correspondence until he started for Africa; they might be able to suggest or to put him in the way of some employment. "Dixon," he said, holding out his hand, "you're very good, and I accept your kindness in the same spirit that you proffered it." "Thank you, sir; you don't know what pleasure you have given me by those words. I've got my cheque book in my pocket and a stylograph, and you can have it now." Dixon drew a cheque upon Lloyds Bank, the Tunbridge Wells Branch, and handed it him. "Now, sir, I should try and double the police and get off to London at once; get a bed somewhere to-night, and start fresh in the morning. And now I must get ba-ck, it's very late." -> They quitted the cottage together, and walked on until their roads diverged. "I should like to hear from you, sir, when you've any news," said the butler at parting, "but it will be as well to address me under cover to Martha Fennell." "You shall hear from me very soon, and thanks once more for your great kindness," said Denver, shaking the butler's hand. Dixon returned to the Hall in a very thoughtful mood. After a while he said aloud; "Yes, I think it's the best course I could take under the circumstances." Denver strode towards the village of Frant, put up for the night at the Abergavenny Arms, got his cheque cashed by the landlord, who knew Dixon well, and rising very early made his way to the Wells, and took the first train to London. He was very much relieved to find that his steps were no longer dogged, and hugged him- self with the belief that he had done the police. The fact was that by the time that Denver and Dixon left the cottage the spy on the top of the water tub was "a piece o' ice." To have again taken up the chase would' have been a physical impossibility; he could scarcely crawl. Besides, after the evidence he. had secured, the young man was a very secondary consideration. CHAPTER VII, A Secret of the Grave. Mike Fennell was out on his usual night prowl. Crossing the plank bridge, over which Denver had passed earlier in the even- ing, he kept along the bank of the stream, but in the opposite direction to that pursued by the young man. He had set some snares, and was going to see what victims had been caught in them. The full moon was rising blurred and wan through the hazy atmosphere at the end of the valley, and casting a ghostly light through the almost leafless hazels and sapling ashes, and upon the rank greensward, but leaving the water dark, as it gurgled over its stony bed. As he proceeded the ground was swampier and the thicket more dense. J As he was skirting a hollow he noticed something huddled up in the bottom. Ferhapa on4 a man whose eyes were a8> accustomed to the dark as were the poacher's would have noticed it in the dim light that struggled through the embowering trees. He carried a small dark lantern in his pocket, and taking it out, turned the bull's-eye upon the object. It was a woman's body. After a moment's hesitation he crept cautiously down into the hollow to get a closer view. The body was clad in dark clothes, but the colour was soddened out by, the damp, the face was prone upon the graas. He knelt down and raised the head; its posi- tion had saved the features from the attack of vermin; they were very discoloured, and "Time's effacing fingers" had already set their mark" upon them, but he could not repress a cry as he recognised them to be those of Lilian Griceson. In his fright he dropped the body, jumped up, and then stood gazing at it. Mike Fennell was a callous ruffian, but he shook with horror; he had known the unfor- tunate lady since she could first toddle; she had been good to his wife, she was loved by everybody, and to see her come to such an awful fate was a shock even to his bull's nerves. After a while he again raised the dead head, and passed the light over the body; there were no signs of blood or violence aa far as he could perceive. The features were twitched, as if by a spasm, but bore none of the indications of a violent death. Yet. if there had not been foul play, how did the body come to be in this place? When he last saw Lilian, on the night of the murder, she was in company with a man whom, he believed, he recognised, though upon that point he kept silent. When they fled at the coming of Herbert they took this direc- tion. Then she must have met her doom, whatever it had been, on that very night. for the body had evidently been lying there some days, and at that time of year no one might pass the spot for even weeks together. Wlhat should he do about his discovery? He pondered for a while. then he made up his mind to go to Sandlands and inform Miss Griceson of it. He was cute enough to see that it might be turned to good account. He hurried off to the Hall, and knocked at the front door. The footman who answered was almost paralysed with amazement when Fennell asked to see the missis." Do you suppose, my good feller, she'll see you at such an hour -as this?" he asked, superciliously, "or at any other time?" Fennell was prepared for this, and thrust his bulky body between the door and the toll to prevent the servant shutting him out. Look here, young feller, you take my message to,your missis; that's all you've got to do. Tell her that Mike Fennell wants to see her on a case of life and death, and that she'll never forgive herself if she refuses to see him now, this minute." There was a deadly earnestness iii ltnm)p tone and manner that impressed the flunkey, and, though he muttered, I expect my mis- tress will have you kicked <jnf F* E 20, place for your impudence," he went away with the message. A couple of minutes afterwards he came back and sulkily showed him into the dining* room. Then there was a rustle of silk, and Agatha Griceson, trying to look haughtily indignant, but with an uneasy, anxious expression of face breaking through the mask, swept into the room. After closing the door, she demanded what he meant by sending such a message to her, and that he would explain his business without a moment's delay. It won't take me long to do that, miss," replied Mike grimly. I have just found the dead body of Miss Lilian in a hollow in Fox Wood, and I thought you'd like to be the first to be told of it." Agatha., who had been standing near the door, turned ghastly pale, -Clutched at the back of a chair, swayed, and fell into it. gasping for breath. She could not speak, but pointed to the side-board, on which stood some decanters of wine, Fennell, understand- ing the motion, filled a glass from one of them, and -handed it to her. After a few sips she said, How brutal of you to tell me so suddenly; the shock might have killed me." I only did what you told me, mistress, he answered bluntly. You must be mistaken, it cannot be—Miss Lilian, she has not been in the neighbourhood for many months." She was here at the Hall on the night of the murder; I saw her with my own eyes, retorted Fennell. A lock of terror came into Agatha's eyes as she said, in a voice that fell into a whisper, You saw Miss Lilian Griceson on. that night?" "I heard the Squire's dying cry. I saw a man come out of here, and Miss Lilian was waiting outside for him; they both went down into Fox Wood; he had hold of her wrist, and there to-night I find her body." Agatha, with lips apa-rt, and clutching at the arm of her chair, sat gazing at him with some thought behind her terror known only, to herself. Have you told this to anyone?" she asked. in the same whispered voice. Yes, to my wife-and to Master Herbert." To him!" she cried angrily. Yes, but he won't mention it-he made me promise not to-the secret's safe with him- for her sake." "I don't believe a word of it-it's all a made-up story of yours to save that man Herbert," she cried excitedly. Yery well, Miss Agatha, you must believe or not, just as you like; but I ain't a liar. I shall go and report the finding of the body to the police; they'll soon find out I'm speak- ing the truth." There was an ugly look upon his face as he made a movement towards the door. Stay," she cried. I'm so distracted; I don't know what to think or believe. Who was the man you say was with her?" That Mr. Roydon all the row was over, or I'm much mistook." The green-grey eyes were searching his face, trying to read beneath the look of dogged insolence it expressed. If she has been lying dead in the open all this time, now seven days, how could you possibly identify her i," demanded Agatha, with a shiver. I'll take you to the place, if you like, and you can judge for yourself." He never supposed that she would take him at his word, and was surprised when, after an inward struggle, she said desperately, "Yes, I will go wjth you. Now go; wait for me on the slope of the wood, wait till I come; it may be half an hour, an hour, but I shall come. "Yery well, miss." Then. looking at her delicate costume, he added, It is a swampy place, you know." I shall be prepared. Now go." As the door closed behind him, she clasped her hands over her face, and her body. shook convulsively. filo be oontiBoed).
