-THE STOLEN PHENIX,
THE STOLEN PHENIX, A ROMANCE OF LOVE, INVENTION, AND A GREAT CITY, By R. NORMAN SILVER, Author of "Hate, the Destroyer," "A Daughter of Mystery," &c. CHAPTER XXVI.-Continued, I've a Right to Know. Ransom hesitated. "Oh I-I met him once," said the draughts- man, "after a pull on the river. He gave me a lift with a grounded skiff, and I found him a pleasant fellow; he-he was interested in mechanical matters, so we had a bond of interest; but I've often wondered what Temple could have meant by his outburst. You only came in towards the end of it, and it doesn't do for husband and wife—even if they're only prospective-to have mysteries between them, does it?" "No," conceded Valerie Western, with a singularly dry intonation; "and yet, my dear Oswald, I find explanations extremely boring —especially when I have to make them," with which observation she rose sharply, as if to dismiss the subject. Lord Linacre judged it time to cease his eavesdropping. Stealing back to the thres- hold, hidden by the screen, he re-entered the room alertly. "Ah!" he exclaimed, "they told me you were here, Oswald. And so Valerie haa been entertaining you. You asked for me, though, my boy; surely you don't want to talk busi- ness to-day?" "There is just a trifle," murmured the draughtsman, with a glance at Valerie. She shrugged her shoulders. "That means I am in the way," she said in- cisively. "You are not very polite; but I suppose your future wife must get used to that." And she glided off, the odd smile that Ransom's cross-examination had provoked still lingering about her mouth. The peer sat down, after a swift review of Ransom's face. "What's wrong?" he demanded briefly. "If it's money, I've done you a good turn. Sir Daniel agrees to give you the interest on ten or twelve thousand for a wedding present. The cash itself will be locked up, worse luck! He has his doubts of my speculative instincts, has the worthy uncle." Ransom shook his head. "It's not money," he said, "but about the Phoenix, or rather, Temple's patents in her. They're being infringed, and within three miles of us. I got a glimpse last night of a boat that's on the stocks down the river, care- fully shut up in a temporary yard, and evi- dently almost completed;, the launching ways were being carried down to the water. She has both the top-side fins of the Phcenix, and her double propeller. She seems to be a Yankee venture. I heard a fairly familiar name men- tioned in connection with her, that of Har- rison Mack, the fellow who tried to buy up Goulder's unsuccessfully. They have been working on her night and day, I gather; no doubt she is to be submitted to the Admi- ralty." Lord Linacre opened the paper he held in his hand, and pointed to the paragraph he had marked. Ransom read it:- "We understand that certain rights of manufacture in some of the most valuable of recent improvements relating to submarine navigation have become the property of an American magnate. not unconnected with the steel industry. A British engineer and a naval lieutenant now on the Mediterranean station are said to be among the sellers." The draughtsman uttered an oath. "Temple must have found a. new supporter," he said; "that accounts for his beginning to worry you again about that cheque. Have you got the threatened WTit yet?" "No," answered the peer, "and I confess I didn't expect to; I reckoned Temple was only bluffing. But there may be more in it than I fancied, if this paragraph and your dis- covery go for anything. In any case, we'll put a stopper on Mack, and perhaps, also, a spoke in Temple's wheel." He took out a card, and wrote on it a name and address. "These are my solicitors, he said; "go to town by the afternoon express—the only decent one to-day. See them first thing to- morrow, swear a stiff affidavit, and apply for an injunction, ex parte. You will at least get one for fourteen days, if you put up the right sort of counsel. Telegraph notice of the injunction to Mack, and enter an action for infringement-no, not infringement of patent rights; we should need Temple's co-operation. Enter one for infringement of our manu- facturing licence. You understand? Perfectly!" answered Ransom, and he pocketed the card. Lord Linacre tore the paragraph out of his financial weekly, and put it in his note-book. "By the bye," he added, "have the Yankees pirated our—that is, your patent rudder ?" N—no," stammered Ransom nervously; apparently not." x The peer showed his white teeth. That is just as well, my dear boy," he commented, "for between ourselves, I haven't forgotten Temple's mysterious references to the authorship of that particular patent. j Don't misunderstand me. I believe in the' good old rule, the simple plan— That they should take who have the power, And they should keep who can.' Only, it is as well that particular issue isn't to be raised. There, get off to your room and pack your bag. By four o'clock to-morrow you will have discharged the first shot in our duel with the Yankees, or the legal gun will, temporarily, have missed fire." Oswald Ransom made a hasty adieu, and set out upon the errand assigned him. In the hall of the bungalow he paused to clench his fist and indulge in an angry murmur. "What cursed luck!" he growled; "Blair, Temple, and the latest thing in millionaires! It is the deuce's own combination." He stopped to light a cigarette. His glance dwelt momentarily on the flaming vesta; he threw it down and snapped his fingers. By Jupiter!" he cried; "I had forgotten my trump card." When be passed out at the door a servant held open for him, he was laughing silently. I CHAPTER XXVII. In Which a Telegram Arrives. Sudden! My dear child, I won't have him know it for worlds, but I fell in love with him the very first day I saw him. Of course, it was most unladylike of me, but then I didn't let on to a soul. And when he suddenly appeared and got to calling me Narcissa, I had to pinch myself to find out if I was awake. I never, never dreamed he cared for me, and yet he's been thinking of me for two solid months, and frightening himself to death with the idea that I'd a beau, as he says." Sybil Hope kissed her sister's flushed cheeks; I they make her own look very pale, and the light in the little typist's blue eyes had but a dull counterpart in Sybil's brown ones. Narcissa was crouched in her favourite position upon the big hone-hair buffet fax the fireplace in the living-room of the Crow's Nest. Sybil sat. by her, in Cuthbert Hope's armchair. If you had seen father's face!" cried Narcissa. Poor dad, he came in from the, garden when Harrison (haven't I got it pat already?) was making sure he'd got me, aa he said. I jumped up and whispered, 'It's father,' and Harrison put his arm round me and laughed, and said, 'Mr. Hope, I have come all the way from New Jersey to marry your daughter, and I have just been breaking it to her. Introduce me, Narcissa.' And I burst out crying, and sobbed, 'Oh, dad. I'm so happy, and this is Mr. Harrison Mack.' She tried to smile, but had to be content with stifling a sob. The little typist was still bubbling over with excitement and newly- found happiness. Sybil clasped her silently* averting her own face. "Of course," added Narcissa, struggling with hysterical mirth at the recollection, "dad was paralysed, and I couldn't get sensible all of a sudden. But Harrison held my hand and made father p6 lovely speech, and I ran away and shut myself up. After we had quieted down, we had some sort of a lunch, and then dad—dear old thing!-went out and smoked. And, oh, I'm the happiest girl in the world!" She flung her arms about her sistfer, for a suppressed sigh had reached her ear. And I've been thinking, Sybil dear," she pursued, "that I'm not going to monopolise all the happiness, and have you left out in the cold. So you've got to stop sending back poor Mr. Temple's letters. If I'm good enough for Harrison, you're more than good enough for Mr. Temple." "Don't, dear, please!" begged Sybil, it's different. Allan isn't rich and independent., I must remember what is best for him. Perhaps if he could have made a lot of money, out of his patents, it would have been another thing. But he says in one of his letters th..t. he has lost-that he has been tricked out of ever so many thousands of pounds in con- nection with the Phoenix." Oh," said Narcissa, starting up, then you, do open his letters! That's a good sign." How could I tell where to send them back to if I didn't?" queried Sybil gravely. Narcissa's answer was a. leisurely, pentrating survey. My dear Syb," she inquired at length, you surely don't return the poor fellow hijk letters opened, and without a. word of explana- tion or apology? I suppose that the envelopes you send me to post, so that Mr. Temple, shouldn't have any clue to your whereabouts* contained his just as you received them, and, that you got his ship's station from tha papers. "Men-of-war don't stay at one port on a station," retorted Sybil; "and besides, I don't, return his letters rudely. I merely put in line, asking him not to write any more. Narcissa burst into a. peal of merriment. Sybil, Sybil!" she cried, you blesaaX simpleton! Here I've been pitying you from, the bottom of my heart, and you've merelji been carrying on a romantic correspondence* You hollow fraud!" Sybil was stung. She reached to the ha4 and jacket she had thrown off on her arrival, and picked up the Gladstone with the railway; label, and the luggage-tag inscribed, Hope, passenger to Carhaven. I don't think you're quite kind, NarciBsa," she said, and went out of the room, up the maritime-looking stairway. N arcissa. was about to follow her when she was arrested by a knock at the front door of the Crow's Nest. She crossed and opened it. In the trellised porch stood no less a person than Allan Temple. 011. good gracious!" said the little typist, and held out her hand. "Come in!" The lieutenant treated her to a cordial clasp of his brown fingers. He was tanned and stalwart, but not so boyishly chVerful in bear- ing and expression as she had been used to see him. He glanced about him as he entered the cottage, and Narcissa heard him; draw a deep breath. I—I don't know that I ought to be here, Miss Hope," he began. but I was in London on leave, about some law business, and 1.: couldn't resist the temptation to run down* I wanted to thank you for acting as my post- office." He was endeavouring to maintain a casual- tone, but the attempt failed suddenly. I have lived to send those letters, Miss Hope," he added huskily, "yet I fear they have done me very poor service. Sybil has invariably returned them one by one, under cover of brief notes, begging me to cease writing to her." Allan Temple leaned against the table, his bosom heaving with suppressed emotion. She is well?" he faltered. Narcissa nodded, and pointed significantlyl, to the staircase. "Here!" exclaimed the lieutenant. "Miss Hope—Narcissa, let me see her for a momenb —for five!" Narcissa consulted the clock on the mantel. You can't have a great deal more," she responded; dad will be due home shortly for his lunch, and three will be no company with a yengeance. I'll call her and slip out. You stand in the corner by the dresser, or she'l), notice you too soon." "You're the best of good fairies," said Allan, Temple, taking up the indicated position. "Fairies have only to wave a wand," de- murred Narcissa, and people give in at once. Neither you nor I can wave that sort of » wand over Sybil. S-s-st!" And wfth a sibilant warning, Narcissi mounted a few steps of the broad stair,, and called clearly towards the upper fioorf. "Syb!" she cried. "Syb! I want you! Come down for a minute, there's a dear!" She shrugged her shoulders as she wenv through the rear of the cottage. A very white lie," she remarked consol- ingly, and peeped in at the kitchen door to whisper: "Don't argue-shake her!" His energetic counsellor withdrew just in time. Sybil was descending the staircase. "Yes, dear, she said quietly, "what is, it?" Temple moved from the niche into which. Narcissa had directed him. "Sybil," he murmured," I persuaded Nar- cissa to help me to get a glimpse of you. Forgive her tiny fib." Sybil paused on the shallow landing—a girlish, distressful figure. She had take-off her travelling costume, and put on a simple house frock, in which she had kept many a. tryst at the Beacon. Oh. why-why did you come ?" she said. "Why have you gone on writing to me when I begged you not to?" It is my right," answered Temple; "yott promised to be my wife. I will not return yo't that promise-unless, indeed, you can say yow have ceased to love me. Till then you are not, your own property; you are mine, and t claim you." (To bfc OwrthiW4
