He takes under his protection a little hunchback named Willie Newhouee, son of his gamekeeper, Jack Newhouse. A book by a great jockey (Sam Cliifney). who held the theory that a racehorse should be ridden as though "held by a silken rein." fills Willie with the desire to become a jockey. Eddie decides to forward the iart's ambition; with this object he enlists the influence of his guardian, Sir Harry Wall- man. The latter's trainer. Fred Helton, is prevailed upon to take Willie into his stable at Newmarket, while Eddie makes a begin- ning- a an owner of racehorses, through the kindness of Sir Harry, who makes him a present of Snowball. Lady Wallman has a ■worthless son by a former marriage, West on Go-ulston. who haR been forbidden the house by Sir Harry. His sister, Lila Goulston, is a charming girl, with a disposition to favour Francis Wrexham, Eddie's tutor. Meanwhile young Xewhouse made a capi- tal start at Newmarket. After his first trial Helion expresses unqualified satisfac- tion. Willie, of course, highly delighted with his initial success, writes to his father in glowing terms. At the -Newwarket Octo- ber Meeting, AVillic rode his first race on Heirloom in the Apprentices' Plate, winning easily. Great doings followed this at Glade- mere in celebration of the young master's coming of age. The house party for the event included Lila Goulston, who, before her visit concludes, accepts Wrexham as her affianced husband. At the Goodwood meet- ing, at which Sir Harry Wallman has a house party. Eddie St. Ann has entered Snowball for the Stewards' Cup, Willie Xew- house having the mount. CHAPTER XXI. A Rush at the Finish. The Stewards' Cup always provides much speculation, and the field on this occasion was up to the average, twenty-four horses being numbered on the hoard. For some time past Handyman had been favourite, and when Eddie went into the ring he was firm at six to one. Sayers. his jockey, was: a clever horseman, and headed the list of winning jockeys for the year. A dozen horses were all backed more or less, but Snowball was at the outside price of a hundred to three. The horse's great performances in the past were well nigh forgotten, and it was generally considered he had lost his form, and Willie Newhouso was not regarded as a good rider on such a course, and in a big field. Still, there were many speculators who liked an outside chance contented to accept the remu- nerative odds offered to small amounts. I Weston Goulston and Felix Plage were present, and the former met Eddie as he roamed about Ta.ttersall's. ''Has your horse a chance?" he asked; he is at a very long price." "I think the odds are worth accepting- replied Eddie, "but he is very uncertain. I j a-ra backing- him to win a fair stake." Sir Harry Wallman noticed Eddie talking to Weston, and was surprised, for he bad no idea they were acquainted, nor wao he aware that his stepson had been part owner of The Gunner, as the colt, had run in the name of Felix Plage. He was not very well plea.sed to see them together, but he consoled himself with the reflection that Goulston was not likely to have much influence over Eddie. When he met him a few minutes after- wards he said, "I was not a.ware you knew Weston. Where did you become acquainted?" Eddie explained, and added that he had invited him and his friend to Glademere for a. few da.ys. "Weston was part owner of The Gunner," said Sir Harry, surprised. "I did' not know that; are you quite certain about it?" "Yes, because I bought the colt from them." "Weston is my step-son, but I am sorry to say he has not behaved well: he is not fond of work, and I do not like idle men." "He seems rather nice," said Eddie, "but. of course, I do not know much about him." "I advise yon not to ask them to Glademere again," said Sir Harry. Eddie laughed as he replied, "I have no in- tention of inviting Felix Plage again, but I rather like Weston. Perhaps I may have I 'some influence over him for his good." "I hope so," replied Sir Harry, "but I doubt it. Have you backed Snowball?" "Yes, I accepted two thousand to sixty from Draper." "He is a, good man." replied Sir Harry. "One of the best in the ring." The guests at the Oaks were, as a matter of course, bound to support. Snowball, but most of them also had money on the favou- rite. The Vioar requested Sir Harry to invest a. fiver for him on Snowball, and felt guilty in consequence. He did not communicate the fact to his wife in case the horse lost, but h2 knew she would not murmur if he won. The horses wera going down to the post, and they watfliad them gallop past. Handyman went well, and confidence in him increased when the news spread tha.t he had drawn a, good place at the start. Snowball was not. so fortunate, and Helton said to Willie as he helped him to mount: "Do not try and get on to the rails, keep a straight course; it will be much better, and you will not 103e ground. Be careful not to get. shut in. a-nd when you see an opening send him along, no matter how far it may be frcm the winning-post. You will soon find out if he is in good humour, and if he is I think the result is fairly certain. In his best data he would have galloped half the field to a standstill at the end of five furlongs." Willie attracted much attention as he rode Snowball on to the course. He was so small, and the horse was such a peculiar colour I that they were hound to call forth remarks. "What have you done?" said Plage to Weston Goulston. "I have backed Spad-e Ace. I met Downey, and he said the trainer had told him it was a good thing, and if he ran up to his trial he could not very well lose. I got fourteen to one; a, very good price. I do not think you will get it now." "I have backed Snowball," said Weston, "at hundred to three. Mr. St. Ann says he is worth it at the price." Felix Plage laughed as he replied, "If he wins I shall be very much surprised, and so will a lot more people. A couple of years ago he would have been favourite with a stone more on his back. but he has lost his form." "TV hat a horse has once accomplished he I may do again," said Weston. "He is very well in, thrown in, on his best form, and I Advise you to have a bit on. Fred Helton is a, very clever trainer, and generally lays him- self out to win at Goodwood." "His jockey is no good in a field like this and on such a course. A little fellow like that is as likely to be knocked, over as nuL" "Please yourself, but if Snowball wins don't forget I told you about him." When Eddie St. Ann accepted his wager from Ben Draper that astute individual pon- dered over it. He knew Fred Helton, and sent one of his clerks into the paddock with I a. note aekinf him if Snowball had a. fair cbaaofc ..• Helton, as a rule, wr,» shy of giving inform mation to bookmakers, but on more than one occasion Ben Draper had cleverly worked a commission for the stable. The man found him, and when the trainer reitd the note he considered for a moment and then said, "Tell him yes, and him to take tllb odds to win ine a "moukey." When Ben Draper received the message he left his "pitch" and proceeded to back Sjiow. ball for a considerable amount. Weston Goulston saw him and followed him. Hear- ing him accspt a thousand to thirty several times, he thought it advisable to put more money on, but the difficulty was to find a confiding bookmaker ready to accept his wagers. His credit was not good, and he was often long-winded in paying his accounts. As a hist resource he went to Draper, who said — .-No. Mr. Goulston, I cannot lay any more against him. I have laid my book to the full extent. "You might spare me a couple of hundred," "Sell. a brass farthing," said Draper, and. Weston called him anything but a gentleman. Ben Draper smiled as he replied: '-Don't abuse me. I have written that fifty off as a bad debt, and you ought to be thankful." He ran np against Sir Harry Wallman, and, putting on a bold face, said:- "Will you do me a, favour, Sir Harry?" The coolness of the request amused rather than annoyed the baronet, who was in higli spirits, and he said: "What is it, Weston? Short of money?" "No, not particularly, but I want to bacfc Snowball, and my credit is none too good." Sir Harry laughed as he replied, lou are candid, at any rate." "That is one of my good points," replied Weston. "How much do you want on?" "To win a, couple of hundred?" was the repl) Sir Harry pulled out his pocket-book, all abstracted a ten pound note. "Take that," he said, "and mind you give it me back if he wins." "Thank you very much," said Weston. "You are too kind. I don't deserve it." "-No you don t. that's a fact," eaid Sir Harry, "and please do not let your mother know I have been such a fool." "Voung scamp," he thought, as he saw Weston walk away. "What the deuce possessed me to give it him I do not know." Weston Goulston iuvested the money a, few minutes before the flag fell, and anxiously looked forward tc»a good win. There was very little delay at the post, and when the barrier wai raised the moved off in line. Raylcigh shut. to the front, followed by Spade Ace, Lantern, Mischief. Stmffbox, and tho favourite. Snowball held fire at, tile start, but Willie quickly got him into his stride and kept him in the centre of the track. Bayleigh's light wciguL served him well, ¡ and he had a commanding lead at the end of four furlongs, and looked very much like win. ning right out. He was well backed, and the green jacket and scarlet cuffs and cap were very conspicuous. Handyman gradually worked to the front. and Sayers was riding with confidence. Willie saw the yellow jacket and violet sleeves, and knew this was the horse Helton had told him lie had to fear. Snowball was now doing his best, and his tiny jockey, as usual, was sitting quite etill and giving him his head. The distance was only six furlongs, and there was a good deal of bumping and jostling, but Snowball, on the outside, avoided it. At last Eayleigh slid his bolt. and the favourite dashed to the front amidst cheers from his numerous backers. Sir Harry and Eddie were standing together. and the former said, "The favourite goes well. I am afraid he will win. Snowball has a, lot of ground to make up, and they have not got far to go." Eddie was keenly watching the struggle through his glasses, and replied: "Willie is riding him easily and he is going well; he is not out of it yet." "He rides too easily for my fancy," said Sir Harry. "Perhaps so." answered Eddie, "bat it pays in most cases." "Snowball is a big handful for him," was Sir Harry's reply. Spade Ace and Mischief were endeavouring to wrest the lead from Handyman, then came Snowball and Lamern, followed by half a. dozen in a cluster, and the remainder in straggling order. Florrie Simcoe and Lila Collision were excited, and the former said quickly: "The pink jacket is catching them; oh I do hope he wiil win." "So do I," replied Lila, "but I am afraid ho is too far hack." Fred Helton was satisfied so far. a.ud he knew what a rare turn of speed Snowball possessed if he would but do his best and finish veil. He made no remark, but he fell, keenly the excitement of the race, and knew there was every prospect of a desperate finish. Ben Draper closely watched the pink jacket and white cap. and he saw Snowball gradually creeping up without apparent effort on the part of his jockey, and muttered: "If there was a man on him he'd win, but that little beggar hasn't the strength to ridt him out, and he irihst be carrying a lot 01 tiei i weight. AVhat the deuce they put such lads up for puzzles me." "The favourite's beaten," shouted Felix Plage "Spade Ace wins. He wins easy." For a brief moment Spade Ace wrested the lead from Handyman, and the bright light blue jacket was in front. The horse was welt baiked, and a roar of delight came from his followers. Sayers rode the favourite despe- rately, and again Handyman gallantly res- ponded and drew level, and the pair came on at a terrific pace neck and neck. disputing every yard of ground. It was. indeed, a magni- ficent struggle, and a thrill of excitement. passed through the crowd. (To be coutiuued.—Commenced February 21).
