- , THE SILKEN REIN, . J .…
THE SILKEN REIN, J By NAT GOULD, t- Author of "The Double Event." "Settling Day," "In Royal Colours," Ac., &e. -The true way a horse should be held fast in his running." This should ha done as if you had a silken rein as fine as a hair, and that you were afraid of breaking it."—SAM CHIFNEY. SYNOPSIS .-Eddie St. Ann a youth devoted to sport, becomes on the death of his father, owner of Glademere estate, and very wealthy. He takes under his protection a little hunchback named Willie Newhouse, son of his gamekeeper, Jack Newhouse. A book by a great jockey (Sam Chifney). who held the theory that a racehorse should be ridden as though "hold by a silken rein," fills Willie with the desire to become a jockey. Eddie decides to forward the lad's ambition; with this object he enlists the influence of his guardian, Sir Harry Wall- man. The latter's trainer, Fred Helton, is prevailed upon to take Willie into his stable at Newmarket, while Eddie makes a begin- ning as an owner of racehorses, through the kindness of Sir Harry, who makes him a present of Snowball. Lady "Tallman has a -worthlesb son by a former marriage, Weston Goulston. who has been forbidden the house by Sir Harry. His sister, Lila Goulston, is a charming girl, with a disposition to favour Francis Wrexham, Fjddie's tutor. Meanwhile young Newhouse made a capi- tal start at Newmarket. After his first trial Helton expresses unqualified satisfac- tion. Willie, of course, highly delighted with his initial suceess, writes to his father in glowing terms. At the Newmarket Octo- ber Meeting, Willie rode his first race on Heirloom in the Apprentices' Plate, winning easily. Great doings followed this at Glade- mere in celebration of the young master's coming of age. The house party for the event included Lila Gojlston, who, before her visit concludes, accepts Wrexham as her affianced husband. Lady Wallman is any- thing but pleased at the news. "Mr. St. Ann would be a capital match for you. Lila," she said, "and would make an excellent hus- band. I think you ought to have paid more attention to him." "i am not in the habit of ingratiating myself with people under false pretences." said Lila. "But the exer- cise of a little diplomacy," said her mother, "ia necessary sometimes, if we mean to suc- ceed in life." "I quite agree with you, mother," said Lila. "I have been exceed- ingly diplomatic, and am quite satisfied with myself." Lauy Wallman was puzzled, and thought to herself: "I wonder what she means. I can never quite make her oat." CHAPTER XX. Under .the Trees. Weston Goulston and his friend arrived at Glademere, and remained nearly a week, dur- ing which time they enjoyed plenty of riding, shooting, and fishing. Mr. Wrexham disliked them, but he made no remark until they | departed, when he ventured to say that he did not think they were desirable companions. "I could not very well avoid asking them, as I have already explained," said Eddie, "but I shall not have them here again, at any rate not Felix Plage." Francis Wrexham was sorry Lila had such a brother as Weston, and disliked the idea of having him for a brother-in-law. This, how- ever, could not be helped, and, as Lila had not mentioned his name, there could be very little love lost between them. The week before Goodwood, Sir Harry Wall- man's party assembled at The Oaks, aj com- fortable house, with ample stabling, situated within easy driving distance of the course. It had been a cold, bleak month, but towards the end of July the weather became warmer, and there was every proepect of a successful meet- ing. The Simcoes arrived from Glademere a day or two after Eddie St. Ann, and were cor- dially welcomed by Sir Harry and his wife. The vicar was delighted with his surround- ings, and, if he had any qualms of conscience as to the propriety of accepting the invitation, he carefully concealed them. Now he was at Goodwood, he determined to m&ke the most of it, and enjoy himself thorOUghly'1 so that, if he was "called over the coals" later on, he would have the satisfaction of looking back upon a pleasant time. Florrie ¡ Simcoe was a very pretty girl, and she and j Eddie were great friends. Since his father's death, he had been a frequent visitor at the vicarage, and Mrs. Simcoe noticed his grow- ing partiality for Florrie's society with con- siderable satisfaction. Florrie was in love with Eddie St. Ann, but carefully concealed her feelings, although her mother was not deceived as to the true state of affairs. Eddie, however, failed to notice any change in Florrie, and he laughed and joked with her as usual, and no thought of a nearer relationship had as yet entered his mind. The house party at The Oaks numbered about a. dozen, and they were mostly young people, Sir Harry Wallman being fond of the society of people much younger than himself. Lady Wallman was an excellent hostess, and, although she would have preferred not to invite Francis Wrexham, it could not. be avoided. Lila. and Mr. Wrexham met without the least embarrassment, and he wondered if she had made up her mind to accept his offer; he meant to ask her on the first favourable opportunity. Since his proposal, Lila had given the matter her serious consideration, and she had almost decided to accept him. When she heard he would be at Goodwood, she felt he would ask for an answer, and she must finally decide one way or the other. The country round Goodwood is glorious, and there is no better going to be found anywhere than on the well-made course. Sir Harry Wall- man loved Goodwood, it was his favourite meeting, and he always liked to win a race or two there. He had several horses entered, and Fred Helton specially prepared them for the meeting. In the Sussex Stakes, the Prince of Wales's Stakes, the Rous Memorial, the Chesterfield Cup, and other events he kad horses entered, and Helton felt confident of securing two or three races for the popular cream and violet cap. It was Sir Harry's custom to ride out to the course in the early morning, before breakfast. to see the horses at work, and he was accom- panied by the gentlemen of the party. It was a splendid morning, and all enjoyed their ride. Fred Helton was ready with the horses, and work commenced on their arrival. Willie Newhouse was there on a cob, and wa", to ride Snowball and The Turk in their gal- lops. Eddie's Stewards' Cup candidate looked very well as he was slowly ridden about by a stable lad. The Turk was Sir Harry's representative 111 the Chesterfield Cup, which Helton thought he had a very good chance of winning. Eddie rode across to Willie, and asked him what he thought of Snowball's chance. ( If he will do his best in the race I think he will win, but he is a trifle uncertain. During the past fortnight he has gone much bette; in his work, and I think he is himself again." Do you always ride him with a loose rein?" asked Eddie. "Yes, and he goes better that way. I have never found a horse Tun badly handled in that way." "This is a very peculiar course. Have you ever riddien over it before?" "No; but Mr. Helton has explained every- thing to me. and I walked over it on Satur- day. I know it thoroughly, and you need (I have no MMMe for doabt on that head," said 1 wmie. ( ♦ Snowball and The Turk were ready for their gallops, and Willie mounted the former, who had old Samaritan and a smart two-year-old for his companions. The Cup horse went well the full course, and they were all pleaeod at his gallop. The Turk followed, Willie a-gain riding, and made a favourable impres- sion. The remainder of the team did good work. "I think we ought to pull off a race or two, said Sir Harry, as they rode back. "If Snow- ball will only do his best, and Willie draws a good position at the start, he will about win. Helton fancies Talma will win the Sussex Stakes, although he has two or three good ones against him." On the opening day they drove to the course, and Sir Harry Wallman occupied the box. He was a good whip, and always had a smart turn-out. The sun shone gloriously, and it was a brilliant scene on the lawn and in the paddock when the bell rang for the opening event. I Florrie Simcoe had not been to Goodwood. and she was enchanted with the picturesque course and the gaily-dressed, aristocratic throng. She was dressed in excellent taste, and the Rev. James Simcoe was proud of her, and said to his wife: "How well Florrie looks; there arc few prettier girls here to-day." "I never saw her dressed to better advan- tage," replied Mrs. Simcoe, "and, James, Mr. St. Ann seems to be paying her marked atten- tion." The Vicar smiled; he knew his wife's aspi- rations for Florrie. and he did not discourage them. He gianced at Eddie and Florrie, and said "fhcy are a handsome couple, and I see they attract a good deal of attention." Eddie St. Ann was surprised when he saw Florrie Simcoe come downstairs ready to take her seat on the coach. It suddenly occurred to him that she was an exceedingly pretty girl, and well dressed. He glanced from her to Lila, and Florrie did not suffer by com- parison. He wondered why he had not noticed how good-looking she was before. "He sat beside her on the coach, and Florrie was exceedingly happy when he paid her every attention. She had intended looking her best for the races, and succeeded admirably. Eddie I complimented her upon her appearance, and said he had never seen her look so well. "I do hope Snowball will win. to-day," she said, after acknowledging his compliment. "I have never seen a big race; it must be very exciting." "It is," replied Eddie. "There is nothing more exciting that I know of." "I suppose little Willie Newhouse will ricUk your horse?" "Yes; and you will be surprised how well he rides. He has not grown at all since he left Glademere, and haiaiy looks a day older." "It seems wonderful how he possesses tho neccpsary strength to hold such powerfuL horses," said Florrie. "He is strong for his size, and what is more in his favour, he has such wonderful hands. I mean he rides with such a light rein," added Lddic. "You must ceme into the paddock with me to see the horses before the race." Luncheon under the trees passed off merrily,, several racing friends calling round to see Sir Harry and Lady Wallman. Francis Wrexham. was in a heaven of delight, for he had asked Lila if her answer was to be favourable, and she had smilingly replied that he had no cause to despair. This he accepted as a reply in his favour, or as near to that consumma- tion as possible. Lady Wallman anxiously watched Lila and Florrie, and was ill at ease at the conclusion she could not help arriving at. It was evi- dent that Eddie St. Ann was attached to Florrie Simcoe, and it was with a feeling akin to despair she saw how Francis Wrexham and Lila understood each other thoroughly. She was angry with Lila for carrying on a dangerous flirtation with Wrexham; it could not be serious. She gave her credit for mora common sense than to wish to marry a. man of his age. It was simply ridiculous that, Francis Wrexham, who had been her lover, should now become infatuated with her daughter. It must be put a, stop to at all costs, even if she had to explain to Lila, the relationship that had formerly existed between them. The old love for Francis Wrexham had never quite died out with Lady Wallman, and she jealously resented his attentions to her daughter. As for Sir Harry- he was amused at the way things were going, and wondered at Lila's decided preference for Francis Wrexham. "There is no accounting f >r a woman's fancy." he thought. "There's one thing to 00 considered, Wrexham is just the sort of man to make Lila happy; he will exercise a bene- ficial control over her, and guide her with a" firm hand; it will be all the better for her if she has a masterful mind to influence her." Under the trees at Goodwood, during the luuchcon hour, there were many merry parties, but none where deep feeling, under light manners, were more effectively conceailcd than at Sir Harry Wallman's table. It did not conduce to Lady Wallman's peace) of mind when one of her most intimate friends said: and Mr. Wrexham seem quite to understand one another; he is a. very nice man, clever, I think; at any rate, I guthered as much from his eon vernation last evening. Where did you meet him?" "At Glademere; at Mr. St. Ann's. You are quite right; lie is exceedingly clever, and Lila enjoys his conversation." "There can be no doubt he admires her." "Probably; Lila is not bad-looking," said Lady Wallman. "She is a very attractive girl, and I am sorry for the poor man!" "Why!" "Oh, my dear, he is so hopelessly in love with her, and he must be twice her age, or more. Eddie escorted Florrie Simcoe into the pad- dock after luncheon. and they quickly espied Fred Helton and Willie talking to- get her, and Snowball standing quietly not far away. Florrie spoke to Willie, who looked very small, and his boyish face made him seem quite a. mere child. She could not help smiling as he looked up into her face; it made her feel quite tall. "I hope you are going to win, Willie," she said; "it is your first big race, is it not?" "Yes, but I have ridden several winners. The Stewards Cup, however, will be my first great race if Snowball wins," "He must win," said the trainer. "He is very fit, and I think he will really show his best form this time." "I shall feel inclined to get rid of him if he fails," said Eddie. Snowball came close to them, and the trainer signalled the lad to stop. "Here he is," said Eddie. "What do you think of him, Florrie?" "He is a very peculiar colour, but, so far as I can judge, he is a. handsome horse. He iooks good enough to win any race." "And so he is, Miss Simcoe," replied Helton, "if he will only do his best." Florrie patted Snowball's neck and said: "You must win, old fellow, or you will lose a good master, and there is no telling what may become of you. I am sure you would not like to be ignominiously attached to a 'growler' in London, which might possibly be your fate." Snowball tossed his head disdainfully, as though lie understood her, aud scorned the mere idea. She laughed as she said: "He seems to com- prehend; perhaps he will heed my warning." "We have not long to wait before the race," said Eddie, and I must back him again for a trifle." They shook hands with Willie and wished him good luck, and then Eddie left Florria with the ladies and went into the ring. :To be continued.—Commenced February 21).
