r. THE SILKEN REIN,
r. THE SILKEN REIN, By NAT GOULD, Author of The Double Event." II Settling Day,* "In Royal Colours, II Ac., Ac. I .The true way a horse should be held fast in his rwmillg." o I I -This should be done as if you had & silken rein as fine aa a hair, and that you were afraid of breaking it,SAM CHIFNEY. SYNOPSIS-Glademere, a beautiful country place, belongs to a gentleman of scholarly tastes, named Richard St. Ann. His son Eddie is a boy of very different tempera, ment to his father, being devoted to sport and outdoor exercises. The lad is of a most chivalrous disposition, and takes under his protection a little hunchback, named Willie Newhouae, son of the gamekeeper. Jack Newhouse, employed on the Glademere Estate. The latter's housekeeper is his sister Peggy, a pretty unmarried young woman. Francis Wrexham, tutor to young Eddie, exercises a very beneficial influence on the lad's character. Willie Newhouse, during a visit to Eddie's "den," reads a book by a geat jockey, Sam Chifney, describing how a horse ought to be ridden in a race. "This should be done," according to Chifney, as if you had a silken rein as fine as a hair." The book. fires Willie with the ambition to become a jockey, an ambition encouraged by Eddie St. Ann. Quite suddenly, Richard St. Ann dies, leaving his magnificent estate and fortune to Eddie. In his will he appoints as the boy's guardian, Sir Harry Wallman, a baronet, member of Parlia- ment, and wealthy banker, who believes in using "the silken rein" in his management of men. Handsome bequests are also left to Francis Wrexham and the parish clergyman (the Rev. James Simcoe), the former to con- tinue to reside with Eddie; the latter con- trives to interest Sir Harry in his desire to make Willie Newhouse a jockey, the baronet approving of the young squire's ambition to own racehorses. The latter goes up to town to pay a visit to Sir Harry, where he meets Lila Goulston, the banker's step- daughter. Weston Goulston (Lila's brother) is a rake, svho has been forbidden the house by Sir Harry. Eddie, during his visit, is much pleased by Lila's society, and Lady Wallman makes no effort to disguise her desire for an alliance between her daughter and the young squire of Glademere. Eddie and Sir Harry go down to Newmarket, where the latter's trainer, Fred Helton, is pre- vailed upon to take Willie Newhouse into his stable on trial. Helton has a number ot horses which are for sale. Eddie falls in love with one cf these-a. splendid horse called Snowball. As Sir Harry and Eddie return to London the latter says, "I shall never forget my first glimpse of Snowball — what a great horse he is!"—"One of the very beet over his distance," replied Sir Harry. "I think you said you would like to own him?"—"I should, indeed."—"There might be a way out of the difficulty. You could run him in my name, or, rather, I could run him for you."—"That would be splen- did," said Eddie. "Will you do it, Sir Harry?"—* Til think it over, my boy; it does not do to rush at these things; we must take time to consider, bat I do not see any great difficulties in the way.—Eddie returns home and his tutor believes that Lady Wall- man is the woman who, many years before, jilted him for a wealthier suitor. It was decided that Willie Newhouse should go to Newmarket after Christmas, and meanwhile he practised riding. It was seen that he had "fine hands." and his succees made, the stable hands jealous, particularly one indi- vidual. Joel Meara, who lets his temper get the better of him, and is soundly thrashed by Jack Newhouse. Meara is suspected ot pouh, and ie lectured by Eddie. CHAPTER XL-Continued t' A Fast toung Man. A "What price are you laying April Morn for the Oesarewitch?" asked Weston. "Thirty-three to one." "11.1 have two hundred to live." "No, you will not, friend Goulston. Borrow fifty without interest, and then want a point the best of me in a wager; not much." "I'll hare two hundred to six," said Weston, making a note of it." "Do you know anything about the horse?" "No; merely a fancy of mine." "You can do as yon like, of course, but I never back my fancy. I always back a horse 1 the money is piled on in the right quarter," said Draper. "And I suppose you can tell what the money is om?" "I think to; my business in that line is not small." "Do not write any more letter))) Hke thia," said Weffton. "Necessity, my boy, pure necessity. You knew I meant what I said in the letter. If you delay paying me that fifty when it is due you will probably ha-ve a 'rcpeato ditto. "He's a young fool," thought Draper, when Weeton Goulston left. "I wish I had had his chanoes in life; I don't think I would have made such a hash of them. Perhaps it is just as well ae it is, and I cannot grumble at lack of business." Of the two men Benjamin Draper was decidedly the better member of society. He had made his way i nthe world by his own efforts, and from a ragged little urchin, sell- ing newspapers, had developed into a man of considerable wealth. Keen and shrewd, yet he possessed & kindly heart, and many good actions were reoorded to his credit. He was hard as naile with some people, but lenient with others he thought deserving. He lived at Hampton. in a com- fortable house, and his wife and children had no cause to oomplain of his conduct towards them. He was stern, yet kind, and seldom refused a request when properly made. He had enemies, generally men who owed him money, but he had many staunch friends. His figure wae familiar in the ring, and he received and paid large sums of money over most of the big events. It was lucky for Weston Goulston he had not fallen into the clutches of a less scrupulous man. CHAPTER XII. I Visitors at Glademere I "What a lovely place!" exclaimed Lila, as they drove up the spa/cious avenue to the Hall. "I am not surprised at Mr. St. Ann preferring it to London." Lady Wallmaji tfas charmed with the sur- roundings, and as she realised somewhat the extent of Eddie St. Ann's domain, she looked at Lila and thought what a good match he would be for her. Sir Ilarry was always pleased to visit Glademere, and was glad his wife and daughter had an opportunity of seeing it. Eddie received his guests with the heartiness characteristic of him, and anticipated much pleasure from their visit. During hiB father's lifetime very few ladies came to the Hall, but naturally his son desired a change in this respect. Francis Wrexham saw them aJight from the carriage, -and recognised Lady Wallman ae the Stella. Reid who had thrown him over in such a. callous manner. He did not get a very good view of lila, but her figure reminded him strangely of her mother in i her younger days. Now that he was certain of her idtentity he seemed somewhat loth to meet her. Years had passed since they were friends, and since be had seen her, a.nd he oommenced to feel that their meeting might upset his regular mode of life, and fan the love which had well nig-U smouldered out into a flame. He smiled at the idoa as impossible, but something warned him there was danger to his peace of mind in her presence at Glademere. He felt it would be better, if possible, to meet her alone, so that the first shock of recognition would not be noticed by o?iera. This, however, was dif5ouW but be meant to accomplish it in some w%7. Two room o?MeIookht? the _ø4_ Dt. Dkmolp-d .1 h at the disposal of Sir Harry and his wife, I and Lila. had an exceedingly pretty bedroom and retiring room, further along the corri- dor. Sir Hlaarry was quickly downstairs, and went on to the terrace, with his young host. "1 am delighted to welcome you to Glade- mere," said Eddie. "It is always c. PLEASURE to see you." "Tha-nk you, my boy," replied Sir Harry. "•Glademere is a very favourite retreat of mine, and it is the loveliest country imagin- able all round here. By the way, I went to Newmarket on Monday, and saw HeLton. I have purchased Mr. Lamont'I stad. and you can have Snowball. I have carefully oon- sidered the matter, and if you will aooepfc him as a gift, I shall be much obliged." "It is very good of you," replied Eddie, "but I would rather purchase him." Sir Harry looked disappointed, and Eddis said quickly: "Or if you really wish it, I will aooept him. on condition you take a thousand pounds when he wins his first race for me." "As you wish," replied Sir Harry, "but make it five hundred, a thousand is too much out of one win." We will not disagree over it, laughed Eddie. "Then we will settle it in that way," replied Sir Harry. Lila joined them, and said her mother was resting for an hour before dinner, and Eddie accompanied them round the grounds. Francis Wrexham saw them, and knew Lady Wallman was still in ker room. He went downstairs, and waited in Eddie's study, lis- tening for her footsteps. He had not long to wait, for she was anxious to join the others in the beautiful grounds, which presented such an attractive view from her window. Francis Wrexham walked into the hall, and looked out at the door, She saw his figure, but had no idea who he was; the last person she would have expected to meet here was her old lover. "It must be the tutor," she thought. As she ml-me along the hail, he turned to meet her, as though he had just beard her footsteps. They stood face to face in the hall, and Lady Wallman gave a start of surprise and looked hard at him. Could she be mistaken? No, it was Francis Wrexham, fund here at Glademere, of all places. What an untoward ] occurrence. He smiled at her, and said, as he held out his hand: "It is many years since I had the pleasure of meeting you. Lady Wallman. Do you remember meP" She took his hand mechanically, and MA4, in a low voice: "Tea, I l'f;Co¡;nired yon pt once, bnfc by" very strange you should be here." "I am Mr. St. Ann's tutor, or, to be more correct, was his tutor; he is out of leading strings now." She looked out of the hall. and then tamed round to see if anyone was about. "What are you going to do?" she asked. He seemed surprised, failing to understand her, or pretending not to do so. Sho saw his perplexity, and said: "I mean—I think-it will be better for 118 to meet as strangers." "As you please," he replied. "We are strangers." "Certainly," she answered, quickly. "Per- fect strangers. It is much better so." "Perhaps it is, but it will be practising deocp ti on. "It can do no harm" "I dislike deception," he said, meaningly, and she blushed slightly. "If they come in and find us here it will seem strange," she said. "I understand," he replied. "I will leave you, and wait until I am formally introduced. You have not altered as much as I expected." "Then you knew who Lady Wallman wais?" "I guessed when Mr. St. Ann said you were a Mrs. Goulston." "That gave you an advantage." UYes, and so I planned to meet you alone." "It was considerate of you. I am grateful to you." He bowed and left her, returning to Eddie's room, and she went into the garden. Francis Wrexham was glad the first meet- ing was over, and it was probably the better plan. to say nothing of their former friendship. No harm would come of it, and, all things considered, it was pleaeanter for everyone to allow matters to remadn as they were. Accordingly, when he was introduced to Lady Wallman by Sir Harry, he greeted her as a stranger. His introduction to Lila had a curious effect upon him. She startingly resembled her mother as he had known her as Stella. Reid. Her face brought back such a rush of recollection that at first he was confused and at a loss for words; this he quickly overcame, and made himself A^REO- able as he well knew how. Lila noticed his amazed look when he met her, and wondered at it, but she was not dis- pleased; on the contrary, she accepted it aa a tribute to herself. She was a good conver- sationalist, never at a. loss for words, and had a wide range of subjects. Francis Wrexham found her entertaining and attractive. Her voice reminded him of Stella. Reid, and her presence soothed a-nd yet excited him pleasantly. He knew how to please, and his knowledge enabled him to grasp the topics she liked beet, and conse- quently they soon became interested. He sat next to her at dinner, and was attentive and amusing. She thought him extremely agree- able, and rather handsome. He had a quiet, masterly way. which pleased her. although he was deferential to the opinions she expressed. She felt he had power, and was clever, and she liked clever people, especially when they conversed with her as an equality on knowledge, granting that she was well acquainted with the subject of conversation. He was much more attentive than Eddie St. Ann had been, and, on the whole, she decided he was the more genial of the two. Dinner passed pleasantly, in perfect harmony, and Lady Wallmann thought Eddie made a capital host. The following day Eddie drove them to Glademere, and through the park, pointing out the principal objects of interest, and the most charming views. They were enchanted with all they saw. Lila occupied the seat beside him on the wagrgonette, and he seemed to take more notice of her than he had done when in town. There was an evident DEVSIRA to please, on his part, and his surroundings being to his taste, he was more entertaining and amusing. (To be continued.—Commenced February 21).
