MARY-STTEET, CARDIFF X TUDOR WILLIAMS' X pATENT BALSAM OF JJONEY IS THE BEST FOR COUGHS, COLDS. AND ALL DISORDERS OF CHEST AND LUNGS, A CERTAIN CURE! "Oh! dear me. I forgot to give TUDOR WIL- LIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY to my children before they retired to bed. I am certain they will COUGH ALL NIGHT WITHOUT IT. There is nothing on the face of the earth equal to it; thoroughly up-to-date." In this damp and changeable climate Coughs az- Colds are almost certain at some time during the winter to visit every household in the land. It would, therefore, seem only a wise precaution to keep on band a bottle of TUDOR WILLIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY ready for immediate use. Pleasant, soothing, healing, and a splendid tonic, it is certainly without any equal for the prevention and cure of troublesome coughs and in all throat and lung affections. Moreover, it does what no, simple cough remedy will do-it promotes appetite, aids digestion, increases weight, and builds up the health and strength generally. It contains no opiate or other narcotic, and is perfectly safe even for the youngest infants. I am constantly receiving reports from all parts of the kingdom attesting its remarkable power to relieve and cure troublesome coughs. IT IS PRESCRIBED BY THE MEDICAL PRO- FESSION, and USED in the LEADING HOS- PITALS THRONGHOUT THE WORLD. BALSAM OF HONEY Contains PURE WELSH HONEY and an essence of the purest and most efficacious Herbs on the Hills of Wales, being gathered in the proper season, when their virtues are in full perfec- tion. A STIPENDIARY AND A MAGISTRATE IN THE COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN REMARKS:- "I feel it my duty to inform you that I have been using your Tudor Williams BalBam of Honey in my family, which is a large one, for many years. and have proved its great value, having used nothing else for Cough during Measles, Whooping Cough, and Bronchitis, and can highly recommend it to all parents for such complaints." Try it: you will not regret it. SEE YOU GET THE GENUINE RRTlCLE. TUDOR WILLIAMS' PATENT BALSAM OF HONEY. BRITISH OFFICERS PRAISE IT. THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C. OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOINT AUTHOR OF "LADY DELMAB "K CHAPTER XXIX-Continued. I The End. I "But I like to speak of it. I love to remem- ber the time before-Ah!" she cried out as if in pain. "shall I never, never forget those eyes? See, they look upon me from the fire! Oh, Winnie, it is horrible—horrible!" She buried her face in her hands, and shuddered. Winifred took her in her arms, and tried to comfort her. "Let us go to bed, dear. Yon have not been well to-day. Let us sleep. You will be better to-morrow." "Sleep! Yes, let us sleep. That is nearly like being dead. We forget when we sleep. Oh, that I could sleep, and sleep, and sleep for ever!" "Don't say that. You will awake to-morrow. ajid whe 1 you' have seen Steve you will be better. I wish he would come again to-night. I am afraid you are very ill. Come, do take the medicine, and let me put you in bed. The medicine will make you sleep." "No, no, I am better, much better to-night. To-morrow, Winnie, we will go and see the old cave, won't we? Oh, it would do me a world of good, I'm sure it would," Winifred did not contradict her. At last the sick girl consented to lie down and to sleep, but she would not undress. She would lie just as she was with her fnr around her. Winifred put down the lamp, closed the cur- tains of the bed around Bob, and sat in the chair listening and watching. Perhaps she would sleep; if so. the fit might pass away as so many others had done before. She sat still for over an hour. All was quiet. Bob breathed fitfully and irregularly. The rector had gone to bed. and the house was shut up. The church clock struck the half- hour. It was half-past tfn. She got up from her cbnir and looked at Bob. Her eyes were closed. She was asleep. Then she put some coal on the fire very quietly. She went to the casement, moved aside the blind, and looked out of the window. It was a bright cold night, and the moon shone upon the snow-clad earth brilliant and white. The world was gone to rest. She went back to her chair. She dared not raise the light for fear of awakening Bob, and sleep was so precious. She sat in the half-darkness, and looked into the fire and tried fib conjure fancies as Bob had done. The great clock ticking downstairs in the empty house sounded loud and sharp, then a cricket in the kitchen rivalled the clock in disturbing the night, and now and then a fall of snow from the boughs of the trees made itself heard like an avalanche. Presently Winifred heard a step without crunching the snow. She got up and looked out. Ben o'r Cae again. He had come to say Good-night." He stood on the path with his gun in his hand and the dog at his heels. He looked at the window. He saw the blind pushed aside and the girl's face, and he took off his hat in signal of recognition. He waved his hand and passed on. She resumed her seat, and began to think to the time when she and Bob and he were children together; and she remembered the birds' nests and the nuts and the black- berries and the happy days that were gone; and she leaned her head back. And the ticking of the clock grew confused with the footsteps of Ben, and the crickets in the kitchen sang songs like birds in the fields, and everything got mixed in inextricable con- fusion. And she slept. By-and-bye there was a rustle in the bed. Bob raised herself and peered from between the curtains all about. She slowly crept into the room. Her eyes were bright and wild as they shone in the light which the fire cast around. She moved towards Wini- fred. She looked at her profoundly sleeping in the chair. She listened to her breathing, regular and quiet like a child. Then with I her stick in her hand she moved to the door. I She opened it gently and stepped out, closing it behind. Ben o'r Cae trudged up the hill towards the forge. Weeks had passed, and Bob had got no better, and he was fretful and miser- able. He called on Eccles daily for news, and to-day he had been told that her con- dition wae not quite so favourable. The doctor had hinted that the illness might ter- minate fatally; that Bob did not seem able to recover from the mental shock which she had sustained. These disorders of the mind," he had said, are the most difficult things we have to deal with; they are in- sidious, they wear out the body, and there is nothing which seems to have any effect. They simulate diseases which do not exist. She is rational, and at times seems to pro- gress. but she appears unable to overcome the horror which the death of Mr. Winstaple produced; it preys upon her," Ben passed the place where he had picked her up. He stopped a moment and looked around, remembering bow that her head rested on his knee, and the kiss he had stolen as he carried her down the hill. Myrddin stood close by with his tail between his legs; he seemed to recollect that this was an unholy spot, and he did not wish to remain any longer than was abso- lutely necessary. They moved on; they arrived at the forge. The dog went into his kennel, and Ben entered the cottage, intending to go to bed; but he could not sleep. There weighed upon his mind the burden of some impending calamity. "Duw anwyl, Duw anwyl," he said, as he 1 turned restlessly. "It was sad, it was sad. If I was kill the man before, it would not have happened. Poor Miss Bob." Then he got up again, and lit his pipe and smoked it, looking out of the window at the snow. and at the river that flowed under the bridge close by, and at the moon that shone so brilliant. The dog turned in the kennel and crept out, sniffling the night air; be, too, was uneasy in his mind. Then the distant church clock proclaimed midnight up the valley; a cock at a farm on the hill. who was awakened by the sound, and who perhape mistook the moon for the rising sun, crowed; then another fol- lowed, and a third took it up; a dog howled for a. few moments, then all was still again. Ben opened the door and stood in the little yard looking down the road. liiaf What was that? What was that white, silent figure that walked in the roadway? Ben leaned forward. It was the hour for spirits, and hili heart stood still. The dog wa-6 also afraid. He looked-he did not move. It came on and on—close by the forge, then straight on without turning to the right or to the left along the CLutle Read. "Miss Bob! Miss Bob!" whispered Ben o'r Cae. as the figure wrnt by. Yes, yes—she was dead. It was the spirit of Miss Bob that has passed." He advanced into the road on tiptoe, afraid to make a noise lie could see the white figure, with the moon shining full upon it. on the road. He was fascinated;" lie followed, step after step. Ah! there were footprint* in the fresh- fallen snow-little footprints. Yes. he had lieard that sometimes even nurit4 leave their S y footprints on the ground. He followed again —he feared to get too nenr-his heart was in his mouth. The dog came close to heel; ha smelt the footprints, then went on again. They followed. The figure turned away to the right straight up the course of the Llwchwr, and boldly entered the wood. Amongst the trees it was dark, and as Ben stepped from tree to tree he could hear the slight crackling of the twigs and leaves in front of him. He followed the sound; some- times it cead for a moment, then went on again, right- np to the place where the river came out of the rock. As he came into the open, Ben saw the white figure disappear into the cavern, he advanced a few steps, then stopped. The caves of the Llwchwr were hannted. Thtve was the story of dwladys and the Prince Gryffydd, and the song that she sang at mid- night; and the hundred other stories which he had heiird when a child by his father'* hearth. Ben stopped. He was frightened. Was it the spirit of Bob that he had seen, or was it some counterfeit seeking to lure him to his destruction? He could hear his own heart beating above the sound of the tumbling waters. He dared not stir. The dog crouched at his feet. Then all at once the stillness was broken by a sound—a sad voice, as of a girl in sorrow, weeping and singing- I dreamt of the spirit of love. Spirit of joy, spirit of woe, Spirit of woe. spirit of woe." It was the voice of Bob. Ay. he might be mis- taken about a thousand things, he could not be mistaken about that. She was dead, and she sang to him of the spirit of love. He knelt where he was. and he prayed-prayed as be had not done for yeam-prayed for the soul of her whom he now knew to be no more. There was silence. An boar passed; all -was still and silent save for the bubbling river. The cold was biting, even the dog shivered. Presently, far away in the distance the clock struck two. Ben was roused by the sound. Yes, she was in there; the spirit of her he had loved so long and so truly. He would enter now without fear, for the time was not far when he also would be a spirit. He stepped upon the stones, he climbed up the side into the cave alone—Bob's cave. She might be there now-he was not afraid of the spirit of Bob. The moon shone brightly between the three great firs that barred the entrance in front. lie looked around. Yet- yes-there she was-Bob, his Bob-kneelinc close against the wall with her face against the place where he had noticed that her name had been cut. He stood still; he expected the spirit to move; no-a, dead stillness; in the moonlight. he could see her eyes closed; she seemed a6leep. Miss Bob," he whispered. No answer. After a few momenta again, Miss Bob!" Then he moved a. step forward; supporting; himself against the wall he advanced quite *HmtH be coold touch her. The spirit did not stir, btit remained there with its cheek against the cold, wet wall. Ben held out his hand as if to touch her; very gently, very slowly. No—no! not a spirit -a body! he threw himself on his knees beside her, he caught her hand. Miss Bob! Miss Bob!" he cried. Say—«ay, what is the matter?" The hand he held was cold; he touched her face, it was as ice; he listened to her breath- ing; it was still. "Dead! dead!" he said; then he let go tha hand he had held and burst into tears. The dog howling without recalled him to his senses. He remembered what had been said of the cave and of the loose keystone that supported half a mountain. She had oome there to die; no impious hands should take her away. He walked brtck into the open. "Go home, Myrddin; go home-. good dog- good-bye; you will soon get a new maister. 1. He took the dog in his arms and kissed his cold nose, then he put him down and pointed to the road home. But the faitMul spaniel would not leave him there, he remained close and licked his master's hands. Ben tried to push him away, it was to no purpose; at last he gave up tho attempt. Come, Myrddin; you shall be with us; good dog. You would, only die of sorrow, and it is better to die sudden than to live for years in grief. Come!" He fetched a great flr pole from the heap which the woodcutters had made, and he went back into the oave. He entered the place where the body rested he did not move it. he only arranged the cloak, so as to cover her completely; he knelt down by her side, and he prayed in silence, until the moon fell behind tho mountains opposite and left them in darkness absolute. He rose to his feet, and taking the long pola he struck the great keystone twioe with all his might. It shook, it moved—twice again—and again. All at onoe it was dislodged, it fell witit a crash, and rolled down the precipice to the. river below. There was a pause; the moun- tain did not respond at once. Suddenly for miles around the people were awakened with a roar like thunder. The .earth trembled as in an earthquake. The great rock closed down. The three firs were uprooted and cast into the valley below. The a all was still! THE END.
