Municipal Notes. I 1 'V Waste of Water. tv I The attention, of every householder is directed to the serious report in another column of the present position of our water supply. We referred to this mat- ter a few week ago and the warning we then gave was more than borne out by the Deputy Surveyor at the meeting of tho Waterworks Committee. It is quite clear that unless the greatest economy is exercised, the supply to the works will have to be cut off. There is a tremendous wastage going on, and it is to be hoped that every householder will make it a matter of duty to himself and the com- munity to see that his taps are in order. Fpncy a million gallons being wasted daily Town Hall Square. I Plans for a fine new building near the Town Hall were laid before the Corpor- ation this week by Messrs. J. and B. Evens. The proposal of the promoters is to put up a fine cinema, with a number of shops, making a great architectural addition to the town. The Surveyor ex- plained that the plans had net yet been finally completed, but it was important that tho building line should be fixed without delay. Smoke Nuisance. I Complaints are renewed about the smoke nuisanco in Station road. The M.O.H. told tho Health Committee that when he drew attention to this some time ago, the nuisance was immediately remedied. Ooun. D. R. Jones: Station road is a black spot at the best of times, but still it can be improved. It was decided to communicate with the works management. Motor for Fire Brigade. I It was reported to the l-toads Commit- tee of the Council on Monday that an offer had been received for the immediate delivery of a light motor cart to be ex- clusively used for fire brigade purposes. Councillor Jennings (jocularly) There are to be no joy rides (laughter). It was decided to recommend the Coun- cil to accept the offer. It was also recommended that the Council purchase "Sentinel" wagons at £ 1,295, to carry five tons. Unfit for abitation. I The Medical Officer reported that a pre- liminary notice was served upon Miss M. N. Bennett, 29, Mina street, calling upon her to do certain repairs within 28 days. Nothing had been done. Owing to the premises being unfit for human habitation he now made representation to the Coun- cil to that effect. He suggested that the owner be invited to attend the next meet- ing of the Council, when the making of a. mpg Order should be considered.

Housing Muddle. BURRY PORT SCHEME FALLS FLAT. Judging by the discussion at the meeting of the Council on Thursday, the prospects of carrying out a housing .scheme at Burry Port are not very bright. The proposal was to erect 550 houses on the Furnace site, and Thursday's meet- ing was called for the purpose of appoint- ing an assistant surveyor to prepare the plans, etc. The Surveyor said that before going on with the appointment he would like to draw their attention to a letter received from the Local Government Board a few weeks ago. There appeared to be a great rffonl of misunderstanding about this letter, and he was under the impression that the Council thought that the salary of this assistant surveyor would be paid out of the housing loan. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the letter states that only outside labour could be paid out of the loan, and this assistant sur- veyor would be a Council official, and therefore his salary would not be recover- able from the loan. So you see (added the Surveyor) that if you appoint this assistant you will have to pay his salary -out of the rates. Another thing I would like to say is that the Housing In- spector visited the Furnace site on Tues- day and he has cut down the amended ,aite by one Jjalf again. The Chairman (Mr. W. T. Edmunds): On what grounds ? The Surveyor: On subsidence grounds. The Chairman: And waat will that bring us down to now ? The Surveyor: The first scheme was 550 houses; this was amended to 400 houses, and after the Inspector's report it will bring it down to 200. He advises you to look for another site. The Chairman: well, I see no good in appointing an assistant surveyor after hearing the Surveyor's report. It's no good launching out unless you know where you are. Mr. Thomas Davies: I propose that the appointment he deferred. What does the -Surveyor suggest ? Mr. John Evans: The authorities say we can employ an architect and pay his -salary out of the loan, conditionally he has a private practice. This at 7 per cent. on the total cost would work out about. t3,000, and yet we are not allowed to employ an assistant surveyor to do the work which would cost E400, as they are afraid he would be doing some work for the Council. After all that has bn aid about the housing scheme this is how they treat us. Mr. Dl. Davies: I see we have been putting the "cart before the horse" again. Mr. John Evans: We have waited long --enough. The Chairman I am sure all the coun- cillors were of the opinion that the salary of this assistant would be paid cut of the .Joa.1t. The Surveyor: Bofore they get on with the housing scheme they will have to do so. Mr. John Evans: I think we should ask the Government to build the houses themselves. -*Vlr. m. Th are plenty out -of work now. ..Mr# P' Morgan: I understand thC Prime Minister visiting some of the towns about these schemes. | The Surveyor: Tell him to come to Burry Port. Mr. Dl. Davies: Yes,, and he can stop with the Chairman. The Chairman: Bring him here and we will entertain him at one of the Garden Oify houses, where the headroom is 8ft. The Surveyor: I think we will have to look for aaother site as well,. The Fur- nace site is going to give, us a. lot of trouble and will also be a very expensive ioN Mr. Dl. Davies Are you satisfied with the Inspector's report ? The Surveyor: Yes. Mr. Dl. Davies then asked the Sur- veyor whether he thought the farmers had influenced the housing Inspector about this site—"in some way or other." This remark drew forth a sharp retort from the Surveyor who stated "You don't think this man has been bought by a lot j "of farmers He came down to Burry Port to inspect the site and forward his recommendations to the Housing Com- missioners. Concluding, he stated, "I -don't thihk there is a suitable site in Burry Port. Mr. Dl. Davies: What about the Bur- rows ? The Surveyor: Yon know the condition 43i the houses down that district. Mr. DI. Davies: But people are living there. A number of other sites were men- tioned, one which was near Achddu. The Surveyor: There is a bog there. Mr. J. Evans: You sometimes have a 43og on top of a mountain (laughter). The Chairman What about going down the "East p" [ Mr. Dl. Davies: We are. going too near Llanelly. I would sooner go Kidwelly way. Perhaps some day we will get a little too close to Llanelly and they will want the houses. After a further lengthy discussion it was decided to cancel the appointment of -assistant surveyor,, and the Surveyor was requested to report on any other suitable site.

Peace Thanksgiving — e- DRUM-HEAD SERVICE AT PARC I HOWARD TO-MORROW. In connection with the Drum-head Peace Thanksgiving Service to be held at Pare Howard to-morrow afternoon, a proces.sion will be formed outside the Town Hall at 2.30. Those who will take part in the procession are as follows:- D. and D.S. and S. Band, the Mayor ( Coun. Dan Williams, J.P.), the Deputy Mayor (Aid. H. D. Rees), the Aldermen and Councillors, together with the offi- cials, and members of the Discharged and Demobilised Soldiers and Sailors Federation. The public are invited to assemble at Pare Howard by 3 o'clock in readiness for the service, in which all denominations will take part. TO-MORROW'S TRIBUTE. Mr. Jack Morris, secretary of the D. and D S and S Federation, writes:— It has been arranged to hold a Drum- head Service at Pare Howard to-morrow, starting from Town Hall at 2.30 p.m. sharp. May I be allowed through the medium of your paper, to make an appeal to all members of the Federation, and also non-members to make an effort to form a strong contingent, to pay a last tribute to the Glorious Dead, who gave their lives for their country.

HIPPODROME. 1 "All Aboard," which is being presented at this popular music hall, fully merits the big success it enjoys. The singing is good, the dancing smart and captiv- ating, and the dresses are exquisite. Randolph Sutton who takes the role of Paul Shooter, is a, performer who has a "way of his own." With his catchy songs and his knowing ways he is given a rousing reception at each performance. Next week another revue will be staged entitled "Strawberries and Cream," and we would advise our readers to book in advance.

TREAT FOR THE BOYS. I It will be learnt with satisfaction that the Mayor has the project of a treat for our discharged and demobilised men well in hand. Already £ 500 has been received in contributions, and it is hoped that the local tradesmen will do their utmost to augment this fine sum, in recognition of the services rendered by our returned heroes. I Dock Constable — — MR. IVOR JONES APPOINTED. 1 A special meeting of the Harbour Trust Committee was held yesterday afternoon when the appointment of Dock Constable was made. At a previous meeting of the Trust, the applicants, who numbered 20, were reduced to a short list of three, they be- ing Messrs. Ivor Jones, W. Beard, and W. E. Williams. Tho voting was as follows:— I Ivor Jones 7 votes. I I W. E. Williams 4 votes. W. Beard 1 vote. I Mr. Ivor Jones was subsequently ap- pointed. Feared Water Famine. 1 A SERIOUS OUTLOOK. 1 A disquieting report was made regard- ing the water supply at Llanelly by the Deputy Surveyor (Mr. Montgomery) at a meeting of the Waterworks Committee. He said that the total amount of water in the reservoirs at the present moment was 150,000,000 gallons, and the daily consumption was 5,000,000 gallons. At this rate the water supply would not hold out until the end of August. Notices had been published calling upon the householders to save as much as possible and to prevent any wastage. He had also sent notices out to all the works in- forming them of the serious position of the water supply and calling upon them to do all in their power to prevent any wastage. In 1908, the consumption per head per day for domestic purposes was 78 gallons, and for trade purposes 148 gallons per head, making an average of 126 gallons of water for each person. In the year 1916 it had dropped to 36.3 for domestic purposes, a decrease of 100 per cent. and for trade purposes it had dropped to 95 gallons. In the present year the con- sumption of water was greater per head than ever, and he failed to see why this should be. He thought there was a tre- mendous wastage somewhere, and unless this was remedied immediately the posi- tion would be indeed very serious.
