THE HOLY CiTY. The capture of Jerusalem may not be of first-class military importance, but it is. undoubtedly cne of the outstanding events cf this world-Avide war. Added interest is lent to the achievement by the fact that Welsh troops in which hundreds of Llanelly men are to be found, played such a prominent part in bringing it about. As the scene of the most tremendous events in the history of the world, Jerusalem has hallowed memories for us all. Writing a few weeks ago from iJeersiieba to his parents, a local sold?er described the scene on which he looked out, with Jerusalem in sight. There was "the green hill far away be- side a city wall" on wh\ch our Lord was crucified two thousand years ago. In the years that preceded that stupendous tragedy, the city of David had undergone many mutations of fortune. Ravaged by successive invaders, the greatest trial was the Babylonian invasion when the children of Israel were carried into cap- tivity. In the land of bondage, they thought fondly of Zion. "By the waters of Babylon,, we sat down and wept. Wo wept when we remembered Zion." The sweet singers of Israel were dumb in Bbylon. "Howa can we sing the songs of Zion in a strange land." And now, after the lapse of centuries, Jerusalem is again in Christian hands. LOCAL POLITICS. The announcement that the new Labour .party have marked out Llanellj as one of the seats to he fought at the next election adds an interesting feature to the political situation locally. With both Mr. Llewelyn Williams and Mr. Tcrwjn Jones already available, and. Mr. Bond still the official Unionist candidate, the electors will have open to them a wide 'field of selection. We do not know what is happening at headquarters, but it was stated this week that Mr. Vaughan Da vies, M.P. for Cardiganshire,, is likely to receive a peerage. This may mean that an opening will present itself for Tow\n, as a "Cardi," to offer himself for li's iiitive county, leaving Mr. Llewelyn Williams a clear field in Llaneily so far as the Liberal party is concerned.. It will be interesting to watch developments, during the next few months.. CAPTAIN BUCKLEY RODERICK. The announcement that Capt. Hume Buckley Roderick h-rs fallen in action was received u ith the deepest regret in the town where this gallant officer was. so widely known and highly esteemed. Belonging to a family which has played no small part in shaping the destinies of the town, Capt. Roderick and his brothers set ar fine example of patriotism and. service. Like his father and his j, grandfather, lie was an enthusiastic volunteer, and smco that fateful day in f j. | 1 1- 1 1 I AllgT u_u ull active ser- vice. And now, Ùl the flower of his youth, lie has (aid down his life in the fight against German militarism and | autocracy. Hi" memory will he cherished hy many friends as that of g-a very gallant gentleman." ABOLISHING THE QUEUE. The proposals made by a correspondent in the last issue of the "Star" to do away with queues outside provision shops has attracted no little attention. During the last few days, further protests have come from Labour Associations and other organizations protesting against the present inequalities of distribution, and calling for action to be taken to render street queues unnecessary. It is of little use, however, to protest unlets some workable scheme is suggested to take the place of the queues. In this con- nection, the experience of Birmingham will be watched with interest. In the Midland city it is proposed that each householder shall be supplied with a card tying him to a particular retailer to be selected by him, and entitling him to the prescribed rations of tea, butter, and margarine. The sugar card has been ad- opted as the basis of supply. Each house- r holder will be free to select his retailer r for the various commodities, and there must be no chango without the consent of the local Food Commttee.
