Proposed Joint Hospital. I POSITION OF THE HCHAL COCNCTL. At the meeting of the Rural District Council uii Thursday the Chairman (Mr. W. Y. Nevill) reported that along with Mr. John he attended the joint con- ference regarding the proposed Joint Isolation Hospital. It was thought at the conference that the best course was to make the necessary preparations to proceed with, the erection of the hospital after the war, and that in the meantime a site should be fixed upon and also that the estimates should be gone into. Be- fore that was done he v. islu-d the Rural Councillors to decide whether they were prepared to co-operate with other ecouiiell,s or not. The Clerk explained that the repre- sentation on the proposed joint Board would be as follows:-3 ex-officio mem- bers and 4 elective members from the Llanelly Borough, 3 from the Llanelly Rural, and one from Burry Port. The Chairman said the, cost would be according to the assessment of the dif- ferent parishes. He presumed the ex- officio members were meant to be the Mavor and Chairmen of the respective Councils for the time being. Mr "Waddell: Would the representatiou be in after years according to assess- ment ? The Clerk: No, if you fix the number now you will have to get the Order amended if you want the representation changed, but that is a very small matter as it is only a Local Government Board order after all. The Medical Officer (Dr. E. Evans) said he thought it would be very wise to join the other two Councils provided they were reasonable. It was for the Rural Council to see that they were on equal terms with the ether Councils. The Council having discussed the terras relative to the present Borough Isolation Hospital in private, it was de- cided on the motion of Mr. John, seconded by Mr. Griffith Harry, to join the two other Councils subject to certain conditions regarding the present Borough Isolation Hospital. The Chairman said that the Rural Council's representatives also discussed with the Borough Council the charges for the three Tumble typhoid patients who had been removed from Tumble School to the Llanelly Borough Isolation Hospital. At first the Borough Council wanted ten guineas a week, although the Rural Council provided the nurses and every- thing else apart from the caretaker and light. The Borough Council were asked to reduce the charge to 5 guineas per week, and their representatives pro- mised to discuss the matter with the Sanitary Committee. The Clerk reported that since then he had received a letter from the Borough Council agreeing under the circum- stances to reduce the charge to the nominal sum of 7 guineas per week. After some discussion, it was decided to instruct the Clerk to negotiate with the Borough Council with a view to a farther reduction.

A Fox at Llandebie. Stock of Sfcristmas Turkeys Killed. A peculiar application was sent to the Carmarthenshire County Council on Wed- nesday. A Llandebie woman wrote to the clerk that on Monday night a fox killed her stock of Christmas turkeys. HI feel very sad over it, because it is a big loss to me," She added, "Can you tell me whether I can get redress from anyone. They tell me you will help me if you can." The reading of the letter caused some amusement, but nothing was done in the matter.

GENERAL SMUTS. I To the Editor of the "Star." I Sir, General Smuts, who is one of the few statesmen to-day with a vision, has de- livered some speeches bearing the mark of real wisdom. Although a master of the art of war, he hates it, and sets his highest hopes upon the peaceful develop- men of the world. "War," he asserts: "Is man made, and must be undone by the intelligence of man." He ridicules the idea that problems of Peace should not be discussed until after the war, and says that if one-hundredth part of the says that if one t thought that has been given to the war were given to schemes of Peace, we should never see another war. Rural Council. I A meeting of the Rural District Coun- cil was held on Thursday afternoon when Mr. W. Y. Nevill presided. The Clerk reported the receipt of a letter from the Local Government Board approving of the honorarium of £ o to Inspector Rees in respect of special ser- vices rendered. A Dangerous Place. A letter was read from the Coroner (Mr. W. W. Brodie) stating that the jury at the inquest concerning the death of Ivor Hewitt, who was run over by a motor car, recommended that a danger sign post should he erected at Bryndu, Cross Hands. As it was a county road, it was decided to communicate with the County Council. Health of the District. The Medical Officer reported that 20 deaths had been notified during the month, giving a rate of mortality of 8 per 1.000. The greatest age recorded was that of a female who died in her 75fh year. Four fresh cases of Scarlatina had been notified as well as four cases of Measles. N 9 case of Typhoid fever had been notified since the Council's last meeting.

Husband's Application I A man 65 years of age, formerly em- ployed as a labourer, and now obliged to stay at home to look after his wife, asked the Board of Guardians on Thurs- day to receive her into the infirmary. Lady Howard said that if the man was I obliged to stay at home to look after his wife he too would become a pauper. At j the present time it was difficult to find i any outside help. I Mr. Pugh said the Board would inevit- ably have to support both unless some- thing was done for the woman. The Chairman asked whether the woman could not be admitted to the town hospital. Lady Howard:, That is more for in- jured persons and operations. Mr. Pugh This brings us face to face with the necessity of making provision for the admission of such cases. Lady Howard: When we get a new infirmary the position will be relieved. It was decided to admit the woman to the infirmary.

An applicant at the tribunal was asked by the Recruiting Officer, "When did you become aware that your daughter was going to be married ?" Applicant: "The day she got married." The Recruiting Officer: "Not before?" Applicant: "Not I much. I don't inquire much into things.'

Sunday Beer. ♦ Hendy Landlady's Story of a Supper, j Mary Lewis, Red Cow Inn, Hendy, was summoned at the Llanelly. Police Court for selling intoxicating liquor during illegal hours on October 21st, while Dd. James, Sawel terrace, Wm. Keane, Gas row, Silas Evans, Broughton j terrace, Samuel Evans, 2, Brick row, all of Hendy; John Howells, Swansea road, Wm. Walters, Gas row, and William Haycock, High street, all of Pontar- I dulais, were prosecuted for being illegally present. Mr. Leslie Williams appeared for the prosecution, and Mr T. R. Lud- ford defended. For the defence, Mrs. Lewis said that Mr. Paynter, a farmer at Goitrewen, called on Saturday night and said they were going to dig up potatoes on the fol- lowing day. He asked her to send some I men up, and at her invitation, the seven defendants volunteered. She told them to call at 7.30 p.m., and she would give them supper. They called, and she gave them supper and a glass of beer each. It was a very wet day, and they were un- I able to get the potatoes. The Bench fined Mrs. Lewis £ 4 10s., and the other defendants were fined tl each, the fines in each case including 10s for advocate's fee.

In the multitude of appeals now being made to the public, we must not forget the claims of the District Nursing Asso- ciation which has to its credit such a splendid record of service in the town and district. Coal Enterprise at Pwll. + Operations are busily going ahead at the Crown Colliery, Pwll, where power- ful new pumping plant has been laid down. The accumulated water is being dealt with, and every preparation made for raising coal on a large scale in the near future. The promising prospects of this colliery are being followed with interest in the district.

Berwick Aspirants REFERRED TO THE PARISH MEETING. The County Council at their meeting on Wednesday considered the election of a representative for the Berwick Division on the County Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. Dd. Hughes. A meeting of electors, when 150 were pre- sent, submitted the name of ex-Council- lor David Harry. The Llanelly Parish Council recom- mended the election of Mr. Henry James Hopkins, "Paradise," Llwynhendy. It was decided to refer the matter back to a parish meeting to recommend a member.

CONCERT AT STEBONHEATH. j A very successful concert was given at Stebon-heath Hospital on Sunday evening the 28th inst, by the G.W.R. Temperance Male Voice Party, assisted by some local artists. The Male Voice Party handed over a parcel of smokes for the use of the wounded. The programme was con- tributed to by the Party, Mr J Marshall, Miss Ella John, Miss Irene Marshall, Mrs. Leyshon, Mr. W. Jones. The con- ductor was Mr. T. Jones, with Miss M. E. Hughes as accompanist, the chair be- ing occupied by Inspector W. H. Martyn.

I Old W els Melodies I — + — BOROUGH MEMBER AND THE CYMANFA. I A very successful cvmanfa ganu was I' held at Carmarthen last week, the con- l ductor being Mr. John Thomas, Llanelly. I Speaking at the evening gathering, Mr. Llewelyn Williams, M.P., dealt with Welsk music, and said that there was nothing to touch the oM Welsh melodies (alawon) although there were some very iino modern compositions. Among the tunes sung at the national cymanfa at Aberystwyth and Birkenhead there were none of greater merit and grandeur than the "alawon Cymreig"—that was the considered opinion of a high authority on music given him some time ago. It was no wonder, therefore, that the melodies were so popular at singing fes- tivals. The "cymanfa" had done a great deal for choral singing in Wales. Referring to Mr. Williams' remarks, Mr. John Thomas said he recalled that, when the Llanelly Royal Choir (of which he was conductor) was touring America their concert audience at a certain town was composed entirely of Dutch people. The choir gave the choruses of some of the great masters, but they all left the audience cold—there was not a spark of enthusiasm among them, and it was only the singing of the Welsh airs "Ar hyd y nos" and "Harlech" that first stirred enthusiasm, and after that it was kept up to the end of the programme.
