Sunday Beer. ♦ Hendy Landlady's Story of a Supper, j Mary Lewis, Red Cow Inn, Hendy, was summoned at the Llanelly. Police Court for selling intoxicating liquor during illegal hours on October 21st, while Dd. James, Sawel terrace, Wm. Keane, Gas row, Silas Evans, Broughton j terrace, Samuel Evans, 2, Brick row, all of Hendy; John Howells, Swansea road, Wm. Walters, Gas row, and William Haycock, High street, all of Pontar- I dulais, were prosecuted for being illegally present. Mr. Leslie Williams appeared for the prosecution, and Mr T. R. Lud- ford defended. For the defence, Mrs. Lewis said that Mr. Paynter, a farmer at Goitrewen, called on Saturday night and said they were going to dig up potatoes on the fol- lowing day. He asked her to send some I men up, and at her invitation, the seven defendants volunteered. She told them to call at 7.30 p.m., and she would give them supper. They called, and she gave them supper and a glass of beer each. It was a very wet day, and they were un- I able to get the potatoes. The Bench fined Mrs. Lewis £ 4 10s., and the other defendants were fined tl each, the fines in each case including 10s for advocate's fee.
