THE NATION'S THANKS. A united nation speko in the House of Comin;vs on Monday when the Prime -ITinist( ,I other speakers voiced in fitting language the thanks of the Em- pire to tho bravo men and women who are upholding the cause of civilization in the great world struggle. "V\ o who sit at home at ease can have no adequate conception of the iicry trials borne on our behalf hy the Army, the Navy, and all those others associated with them. It is a terrible testing time, and never have our soldiers and sailors more nobly stood the lest. They have shown, and shown on a vaster stage than at any former time. that the spirit of the race is what it has over been; that in dash and in dogged courage, in iron en- ckirance, in cheerful devotion, in splendid humanity, they have kept untarnished the best traditions of our fathers. Every man has done his duty, his whole duty to England; but he has done it with the more generous zeal because he has felt that it snot a duty to England alone, It is a duty to England and also a duty to all that England has ever held most r sacred—to the great fundamental prin- ciples in which her national life is rooted to justice, to good faith among nations, r to freedom, to the rights of the weak and the oppressed, to all that rualves for righteousness and for the reign of law throughout the world. The cause is hal- lowed, and as we watch our men strive for it, bleed for it, and die for it, we are indeed filled, as Mr. Asquith said, with thoughts and with (motions that are too deep for words. I BURRY PORT.'S MEW SUBURB. The meeting held at Burry Port recent- ly served an excellent purpose in drawing renewed attention to the good work being done by the Welsh Town Planning Trust. One of the latest enterprises of this organization is the new suburb now be- ing created at Burry Port, with the h' '1" sympathetic co-operation of the Ministry of Munitions. The urgency of providing increased housing accommodation in this district is so clear that the Ministry have made a substantial grant towards the cost of /the scheme which will add 800 houses in L very convenient location within the urban district. We under- stand that fh s is. only a. first instalment, the intention being to build a thousand houses either at Burry Port or Pembrey. There are, of course, special circum- stances at Burry Port which do not exist everywhere. The establishment of a great inanitions factory has transformed it into an important industrial centre, and the State has properly stepped in to provide the increased housing accommo- dation which „i:rrLy;atc .enterprise, coyld net unaided supply. The problem, however, also exists in Llanelly where there is a. | great scarcity of ?n?s. We do not see v why the ?nnistry of Munitions should not do for Llanelly what is flow being done for Burry Port. Hundreds of work- men employed at Burry Port are resident here, and owing to a house famine, two and even three families are compelled to live under one small roof. The faet is that housing has now* become a grave national question,, a id it is satisfactory to know that the Local Government Bolird are alive to its importance to the r.uL. f Th future of the nation. There is a serious shortage of houses all over the country, and under present t-,)n(litions it is quito hopeless to expect private builders to provide what is necessary. So far as Llanelly is concerned it is the duty of the Corporation to prepare a compre- hensive scheme and to bring it before the authorities without loss of time. SUBMARINE FIGURES. The Submarine Return for the week ended last Sunday afternoon s hows a slight improvenieiit upon that for the previous week. The- gross total of all classes of vessels sunk is 17, whereas last week it Was 25, and. as on that occar-i«n, no fishing craft arc included. This week's total approximates closely to that for the week ended October 14th. It is when the losses in the larger class- of ships are compared with the figures of the earlier weeks of October that there is evidence that that month's returns, when com- plete, will be worse than those of Septem- ber. They thus accord with the opinion expressed by the First Sea Lord at Sheffield. They clearly indicate that the submarine menace is not yet under con- trol, and that the continuance of the U-boat warfare, evc £ i at its present in- tensity, must materially add to the diffi- culties of the food situation. A SECOND YEAR OF OFFICE. Cordial congratulations will be ex- tended to Aid. D. J ame Davies on his unanimous selection as Mayor of Llanelly for the second year in succession. This mark of renewed confidence Aid. Davies has fully earned from his colleagues on the Corporation by his devotion to the duties of the Mayoralty. Though young in years, Mr. Davies is now one of the veterans of the public life of the town, and he has always been in the forefront: of the progressives, anxious to promote in every way the best interests of the community. Llanelly was exceptionally [ fortunate in having a distin, uished pub- lie servant like Sir Stafford Howard for- its first Mayor. Our late friend set a; high standard for the office which, we hope, will never be departed from. To, the credit of Ald. Davies it is to be said, that he has fully maintained the dignity of the position and worthily upheld the fine traditions set up by the late Sir Stafford Howard. FOOD RATIONS COMING? In his. speech a few days ago Lord Rhondda gave us a broad hint that if people were not prepared to economize in the use of food, he would not hesitate to introduce a system of rationing. The Food Controller has no love for such a system in fact he declared that he was going to make every effort to avoid it. He prefers for the present to pin his faith to voluntary effort. If the. desired result is not attained, however, there will be no choice but to fall back on com- pulsory rations such as the Germans are living under to-day. It only remains for heads of households everywhere to take Lord Rhondda's warning to heart. There is still, unfortunately, a great deal of waste going on. This must be stopped without dehty if we are to escape the worry and inconvenience of compulsory rations. The most important fact in the food posit:on -ce-dny is that wo have •» surplits of two million tons of potatoes. This is a gratifying result brought about, in a large measure by the concerted ef- forts of thousands of allotment holders up and down the counh v. '\Vith potatoes plentiful and cheap, the tas? of the housewife in economizing bread is ren- dered easier that in would otherwise be.. Ø1t.w===-

Tragic Eúd. of Mr. D. "'?…
Tragic Eúd. of Mr. D. ? V,- 7 T??- ?•*•' ?.? .1 ,?. A painful sensation was created in the t(;un on Monday by ihe news that Mr. D. S. Phillips, grocer, Waterloo street, had put an end to his life by jumping from his betlrcGro window. Mr. Phillips was one of the oldest tradesmen in the town, and was highly esteenaed for his' uprightness and integrity cf character. He was. a deacon, of Mcriah Chapel, with which cause no hid been associated since his settlement m Llanelly. An inoffen- sive man, with great generosity of spirit, his tragic death is deplored by a large circle of friends.
