Tb' 1 T8 I Tribunal and Tiapkters. e. I PROTEST AGAINST PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT. After a number of appeals by tin- platcrs to the Borough Tribunal had been refused, Councillor John Hughes asked wnetiier the Tribunal were aware that tinplaters in Glamorganshire and Mon- mouthshire were, on the instructions of i the War Office, exempted until Nov. 29. He did not know whether the War Office was aware of the existence of Carmar- .• thenshire, but he failed, to see why such a privilege should be given to other counties if it was to be denied to Car- marthenshire. Capt Morton Evans (to the Tribunal).: You have nothing to do with the circular from the War Office. The Chairman (Aid. D. James Davies) I have seen the circular referred to. A copy of it was sent to the Tribunal by Mr. ■m. Pugh, the secretary of the Dockers Union. It had no reference to Carmarthenshire, and Capt. Evans in his capacity as military representative, did not receive the circular. Capt. Evans I received a copy from the secretary of the Association, but not from the War Office. It did not apply to attested men at all, it only applied to 1111- attested men. Councillor Hughes: The circular which I have a copy of applies'to attested and unattested men. Mr. D. J ennilgs (solicitor): I may mention that the chairman of the Tri- bunal which is sitting upstairs has just stated that the circular applied to both the attested and unattested tinplate men in Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire, who are exempted until Nov. 29th. The Tribunal upstairs have exempted the tin- platers until Nov. 29tli. Councillor Hughes suggested that the War Office might be under the impres- sion that LIancIIy was in Glamorgan- ,Sion tb, GIL Tile Chairman.: That can hardly be the case as Llanelly was entirely responsible for the restarting of too tuiplate trade until August bist. A Llanelly deputa- tion has appeared beiore them several times and fought this question out. Be- fore August 31st we consulted the tin- plate manufacturers and asked'them if in the national interest they thought it necessary we should take steps again to get the starring of the trade extended. Owing to the slior t:\go of steel bars and the increasing demands of the Govern- ments of France and this country for steel for shell making, they thought no • useful purpose .would be served by making such a request. For that reason we took no further action. The circular referred to was issued after fully 500 men from Llanelly had since August 31 gone to the Colours. Councillor Hughes: I a give that ic was very unfortunate we did not know this beiore. and I also agree that it was through Llanelly's initiative that thd t'-ade was re-starred until August 31st. Still I do not sec why preferential treat- ment should he given to the tinplaters cf Glamorg" anshire and Monmouthshire. Capt. Evans objected to Councillor Hughes taking any furtner part in the proceedings as he had no locus standi. The incident then closed.

ihe Eiechra Sunk I GOES DOWX AFTER COLLISION. 1 The steamer Electra, of Llanelly. a v. oil known local trader owned by Mr. W_ Coombs, New Dock, has been sunk in col- lision near Hart-land Point, and all her crew were landed at Swansea by the s.s. Margaret, of Bristol. Both vessels were bound down channel. the Electra from Port' Talbot and the Margaret from Swansea. Thev carne into collision at 6.30 on Wednesday morning in sight of Hartland Point, and, according to the statement of the Elec- tra's captain (Robert Thomas, of AngIf- sea), the Electra sunk in forty minutes while trying to make for Hartland. He said there was no fog, and the Margaret came up behind him. The Electra was struck on the port side. making a big hole through which the cargo began to run out. She rnrlidly began to fill with water, and the crew of twelve took to the ship's lifeboat, when the Margaret took them aboard and brought them to Swansea, where they looked after at the Sailors' Home. The captain and crew of the Electra lost everything, but, as stated, no lives were lost.

Dpunlren Recruits, —— LLANELLY DOCTOR S STRONG I INDICTMENT. At the annual meetings of the South Y\ ales and Monmouthshire Temperance Association, continued at ferthyr on Thursday, under the presidency of the • Bishop of Llandafr, a motion for nationalization of the liquor trade, movd J hy Mr. A. E. Jones, of Talywain, occu- pip(1 the attention of the delegates for a considerable time. The resolution point- ed out that "prohibition alone, prompted by popular veto, is the only Teal remeidy for the national evil." Mr. Jones em- ph asized that it was the duty of the Church to "take the people from the drink," but in that they had lamentably Jailed. Dr. Edgar Davies, Llanelly, opposing the motion, said that this country had missed its opportunity to obtain prohibi- tion. He believed if the Trade was nationalized it would eventually he "throttled." Wales was a very drunken nation. He was appalled when passing recruits at Llanelly at the large number of vouno; men who were examined while under the influence of drink. The motion was carried with two dis- sentients. LIBEL ON LLANELLY," I Recruiting Officers' Vigorous Denial. I Interviewed in regard to the statement made above hy Dr. Edgar Davies, Capt. Morton Evans and Lieut. It was true there were a fpw drunken men—as there are at every re- cruiting centre—but they wen invariably sent awav and told to conic i-acl-r. IPaper MoneyI I 16-
Paper Money I 16 To the Editor of the "Star." Sir, It is ridiculous to belie-e thaw a Govern- ment can produce wealth and enrich the I t' 1 ,I nation by the legerdemain of stamping j on a scrap of paper and declaring that the people must in ir.trax- accept such certificate of value. The idea is too contrary to natural law to need any laboured examination, and natural law soon defeats it or renders it harmful when it is applied in practice. Paper money has been the resort of all | the belligerent countries and it has j given our Government purchasing power, I which it previously did not possess, equal to 130 millions, less 23} millions of gold set aside as cover for the paper. The | contention that the notes l-a- e merely taken the place of the gold tJht used to circulate and have therefore not inflated the currency does not meet the point. For those who formerly possessed gold now possess paper; they have been ob- liged to exchange real wealth, every 20 shillings worth of which represented 20 shillings' in labour and material, and would he accepted anywhere either as a commodity or as money without the force of law for an official I.O.U. backed by force and having no value outside the country. The Government obtained, or now have the gold, drained from private purses by the compulsion of "legal and can use it to purche.se eilhc. name o I" foreign supplies. The supposed economy « gained by not circulating gold is nega- tived a hundred-fold by the increase III prices and by the higher cost of living. I am, etc Trinisaran, l?)IC.. T. E. DALIES. At the meeting of the Board cf Guard- ians on Thursday, application was made by the collectors in the yarious parishes for an advance in salaries. The Clerk said that all the applicants with the exception of Air. W. John were i part time. Theie was a similar application from the relieving officers. Rev. D. The Chairman moved that the apphca- tions he referred to the Finance Commit- j tee, and Air. H. W. Thomas seconded. A general discussion followed, and it was eventually decided that the matter he referred to the Finance Committee. Air. W. Pugh said he had every sym- pathy with a man who required a war, bonus when it was really necessary, but some of the collectors were in excellent positions and comparatively wealthy. He did not think that more of poorer rate- pavers should be called upon to provic.-? for in these cases, and make some of these wealthy men wealthier. He was always in favour of helping the needy.

Killed in Action. Today's cmcial list ei officers killed in action includes the name 01 i>econd-Lieut. Alcwyn Alorland Gibson, ,o or .Mr Geo. Gibson, AH tan road. Lieut. Gibson who was 20 years or age only went to the front three of four weeks ago prior to which he was home on leave. He was a young man of fine physique and took an active part in athletics. While at the Intermediate School he played for the cricket and football teams and subse- quently on a few occasions Olssisted the LlanelJy Rugby team as a forward. Among his associates he was exception- ally popular and he was held in the high- est esteem by all. He. joined the ArLIsts Rifles as a. private and recently received his commission, becoming attached to the West Yorks. The youn? subaltern could only have been in the tiring line a fe\y days as he had been for some time at the base. It appears that a German shell burst as he was entering a dug-out and the shock which he sustained proved fatal. Lieut. Gibson prior to the war was articled to Air. Leslie Williams, solicitor, and the deepest sympathy is felt for the sorrowing relatives.

What's Wrong' in v .£.ç"" t'\f.l. .t..1.1. Westbury Street ? To the Editor of the "Str." Sir, The air was blue with the language that hew about the vicinity of estbury street on Sunday night. Sunday, pleasfe bear in mind It was a vocabulary not exactly Parliamentary, nor did it at all accord with what one generally as- sociates with the Sabbath. There are some Corporation houses in this region, and one would like to know if the ten- ancy of a municipal-dwelling carries with it any special license III tile matter of lang;n>ge. The cause of the trouble ap- peared to be a slight difference of opinion between representatives of the Emerald Isle and the Bantams. I did not stay long enough, to see which side got the better of the argument because I really could not stand it. The average navvy would blush had he happened to pass that way just then. 1 happen to know, •too, that children within a radius of half a mile weie taken indoors by their parents.
