Sporting Gossip. CRICKET NOTES. I By "Midwicket." I Remarkable Bowling. Llanelly made ample amends for their defeat at Briton Ferry early in the sea- son, when last Saturday they easily de- feated the Ferry team at Stradey by 173 runs. The visitors' downfall was chiefly due to the remarkable trundling of Vogler the home pro., and Root, the Derby county player, who was assisting Llanelly on trial. Their bowling was in- deed excellent, as the following analysis shows:— 0. M. R. W. I Root 10 7 7 5 Vogler 10 4 15 4 Llanelly start badly. I Percy Rees and Hubert John openea the Llanelly innings. The first wicket fell without any score, Hubert John be- ing the victim. Root, who filed the gap only scored 3 ere he was bowled by Hacker. Thus two good wickets were down with only four on the board. Good stand. I Percy was then partnered by Vogier, and runs came at a better pace. Just as they were settling down Vogler was given out, caught off his pads by the wicket keeper. Percy continued to bat steadilv, and the score was soon carried to the hundred. Claude Warner and Percy together gave the visiting bowlers a great deal of trouble. Warner was in a merrv mood, and did not return to the pavilion until he had knocked up 33 runs. Dis-satisfaction. Only one run had been added after Warner's wicket fell when Cliff Bowen was given out l.b.w. This decision, which was questionable, was given by the Ferry umpire, and he together with the players were subjected to 'barracking, with the result that the game had to be stopped for a short time. Cliff Bowen, who was captain for the day, was ap- pealed to by Mr. T. J. Thomas, and the game was resumed. Still going strong. I '1 I Th-3 sixth wicket was (lown lui U.L, while the next fell with only one run added. Percy Rees was very unfortu- nate in being run out after contributing 59 runs in good fashion. Will Davies was seen to advantage, scoring 20 runs in excellent style. The score was one short of -900 when the innings was de- clared closed. D. H. Davies was not out with IS r-ins. and Archie Lewis not out with 9 to his credit. Bad fielding. I The visitors' fielding was very poor, and cr.tc'he'S were dropped frequently, Mr Extras reached double figures, 17 being presented to the home side. The bowling was good, and the average would be much better if the fielding of the Ferry men was up to the usual standard. i ?.—————'———-—— ————————*—————— An unexpected collapse. I The Llanelly score was too much tor the visitors, but the fact that the Ferry men have made such good progress in cricket, made the result uncertain, and there was some doubt as to the result. But their reply was indeed a miserable one, and in half an hour the whole side was out. They were powerless against the fast bow ling of Root and Vogler's tricky deliveries. As a sPec^ °- £ re- marked, "They were 'routed' by Ro^ot, and 'Voglerized' by Vogler. Only one man, R. N. Hill managed to reach double figures. There were five ducks in the visiting side. Carmarthenshire Gentlemen's excellent I performance. Fine batting performances were wit- nessed at Stradey on Monday and Tues- day in the match between the Gents of Carmarthenshire and the Gents of Gla- morgan. The Carmarthen Gents started their first innings in excellent style, when Cliff Bowen showed good form, scoring 119 runs. Jack Bevan also gave a good display carrying his bat out for 101. The score had exceeded the fourth century by 24 runs, when the innings was declared with seven wickets down. The Morganwg men were all out for 224 runs, to which total T. F. Reason con- tributed 83 runs. In their second in- nings they fared better their score reaching 315. The outstanding feature was the display given by Lieut. Oppen- heim who was only one short of 200 when he was caught by W. P. Williams off Cliff Bowen. Requiring 116 runs to win, the Car- marthenshire men started their second venture, and with only two wickets down the necessary runs were gained. Percy Rees scored 50 runs. Drawn game. I The Seconds journeyed to Penllergaer on Saturday. Batting first the local men only scored 75 runs, Jack Rees being top scorer with 32 runs. The home men however,, fared worse, and with seven wickets down they had only scored 22 runs, when the match was left drawn. Griff Rowe bowled well, taking five wickets for about three runs apiece. Splendid achievement. I Christ Church gained a good victory on Saturday at Ravenhill. Batting first the homesters scored 43, the bowling of B. Evans and H. Bowen being too good for them. The former captured five wickets for 22 and Bowen 5 for 20. The Christ Church men sent in P. Roberts and H. Bowen to open the innings, and the score had reached 73 without the II loss of a wicket. Bowen scored 54 not out and Roberts 20 not out. Their third defeat. I Sandy Mounts were defeated by Kingsbridge on Saturday on the Mounts' ground. The visitors batting first scored 64, and to this total the Mounts could only reply with 44. This is the third de- feat for the Mounts this season. FeHnfoel defeat Ammanford. I Ammanford were at home to Felinfoel ¡ on Saturday. The visitors taking first I knock scored 113. The home men re- plied with 84. The match between the Rodericks XI. and Nevill's Foundry resulted in a draw. Scores, Rodericks 100 for 7 wickets; Nevill's Foundry, 56 for 6.

Good iadges of football assured me that he is a half-back of unusual cleverness. He is a son of Mr. David Jones, Engine Inn, Llangennech. He has a knack of making opening worthy of Ben Davies at his best, and does the "side step" in the approved Percy Bush style. I There is a great deal heard nowadays (writes a correspondent), about heavy forwards. It is a fact, however, that the best pack Llanelly ever had was also the lightest. As far as I can remember it was made up of Fishguard, Patsy Davies, Dai Thomas, Ben James, Watts, Bob Thomas, and Bill Morris, the last- named being, of course, the heaviest of the lot. Congratulations to Howel Lewis on his selection as captain of the All Whites. Howell has rendered good service to the Swansea team, and thoroughly deserves the honour. It is to be hoped that Llanellyites will not forget to patronize the Soccer Sports at Halfway on Monday. Besides being assured of an attractive pro- gramme they will have the additional satisfaction of knowing that they are giving a "leg-up" to the club. Briton Ferry's low score at Stradey on Saturday must be a record. The nearest I can remember is Swansea being dis- missed at St. Helens for 36. That day, D. L. Joseph excelled himself, taking nine wickets for 12 runs. The busiest man in Llanelly these days is Mr. Walter Whittaker, the popu- lar Soccer manager. He has placed some hundreds of shares during the last few weeks. Asked as to the prospects of the team, he remarked "They are all right my boy, or my name is not Whittaker. It is stated that there is not much likelihood of 1. T. Davies turning out for Llanelly next season. Is this because he has now had his cap and can afford to be independent of the Searlets P One hardly likes to think this of "I.T."
