President of the Central Association Volunteer Training Corps, to a Daily Paper. I — SHALL I JOIN A VOLUNTEER CORPS? Lord Desborough tells readers I 1 why they should do it. Shirkers will have to hide with the women if a German invasion comes along.. "In view of any eventuality every man unable to serve in the Regular Army should assist his country by becoming proficient in training and shooting, as trained bodies of men are so much more valuable than untrained in cases of emergency." This is the message which Lord Desborough, the President of the Central Association of Volunteer Training Corps, sends toreaders. The air raidon Yarmouth has emphasised the need for trained bodies of volunteers who would be ready to repel any serious invasion should one occur. There is no excuse for ANY MAN who will not train at the present juncture," said Lord Desborough in an intervfew No matter how brave a man may be, no matter how much he wants to fight when the time comes, he is no use unless he been trained." "PLACED AMONG THE WOMEN." "He will be placed among the women in a place of safety, or, in the words of the instructions issued to Lord-Lieutenants of counties, he will be liable to non-combatant duties, such as digging trenches, burying the dead, etc.' Every man who is under 38 should enlist unless there are genuine reasons which make it impossible, and every man over that age should join a recognised volunteer force which is affiliated with the central office, so that he may take his proper part in the present struggle." It was at the offices of the Central Association in the Judges' Quadrangle of the Law Courts, Strand, that Lord Des- borough was good enough to explain exactly what the Volunteer Association was, and the work it was intended to do. THE ONLY RECOGNISED SOCIETY. It is the only association recognised by the War Office. Shortly after the war broke out," said his lordship, it was recognised that there were a number of patriotic men who were unable to join the colours, but who wanted to do something. A Volunteer Association was formed for London, but as these associations were springing up all over the country we became a central body. t THE MAN WHO IS UNDER 38. Who can join ? Every man over 38 joins without any questions. The man under 38 is different. In theory he should join the colours, and he is not admitted to the volunteer corps without questioning. He must give good, genuine reasons why he cannot or should not join the Army. Those reasons are recorded in a corps register, which has been specially prepared. The other condition to which the under 38 man has attention called is Regulation No. 7 of the War Office circular. It is as follows :— It will be open to Army recruiting officers to visit the corps at any time and to recruit any members found eligible for service with the Regular Army whose presence in the corps is not accounted for by some good and sufficient reason. The word is recruit, not compel. It is open to any officer to recruit any man walking along the Strand if he can do so. And if the reasons enable the man to join the Volunteer force at the beginning they remain good and sufficient at the end. GOOD REASONS REQUIRED. If those reasons were altered, and the man under 38 did not enlist, he would be asked to resign from the corps. No one knows the charm of drill who has not experienced it. The British Army is a sealed book to the vast proportion of this country's population, but when a man begins to move with say a thousand others at a given word, and to perform acts simul- taneously with his comrades, he begins to experience a little of the fascination of Army life. So great has this fascination been that many who joined the Volunteers enlisted in the Regular forces after they had tasted the first joys of drill, and all the 120 original members of my force at home are now among the Regulars. All my men-servants have joined, and two of them have had operations performed so that they might be eligible. There is no questioning the service of such volunteer forces. They will, in fact, constitute a vast army for home defence, drilled and ready to fight beside the Regulars in the case of an invasion. An undrilled man will be useless." Note.—Those under the age of 19 are on the same footing as those over 38. f JOIN THE RAGLAN VOLUNTEERS AT ONCE. For Particulars, apply to REGINALD HERBERT, Clytha Park, Abergavenny; or DR.
