Flower Show at Llanddewi Skirrid. EXHIBITS OF HIGH QUALITY. I The annual show of the IJauddewi Skirrid and Llanvetiierine Cottage Carden Society was held 011 Thursday, at the Assembly Room, Llan- ddewi Skirrid. The dislocation caused by the European crisis no doubt affected the attend- ance, but the event passed off satisfactorily, and a very pleasant time was spent by those present. The interest was well maintained in various ways, for apart from the fine display of horti- cultural and vegetable produce, there were other sources of attraction. The band of the 7tlt Division National Reserves, conducted by Mr. C. Auty, had been engaged for the occasion, and plaved admirable selections in the field adjoin- ing the Assembly Room. Professor Lucas had also been engaged to give conjuring entertain- ments, and lie fairly mystified the audience with his performances. Miss Johnson did good trade with a houp-la stall on which were displa ed chocolates and cigarettes, etc., as tempting bait to induce spectators to throw the hoop. Impromptu sports were also arranged. Mrs. folinson, of Llanddewi Court, was, as usual, the moving spiiit of the whole concern, and as lion. secretary deserves credit for the excellent way in which the event passed off. She was ably assisted by Mr. W. Steen. The committee were composed as follows :—Rev. K. Jones, Mr. R. Johnson, Mr. T. J. Williams, Mr. J. Davies, Mr. W. Stem, Mr. W. Creen, Mr. Watkins, and Mr. Cotteral. The judges were Mr. G. C. Williams, F, R.H.S. (Maindiff) and Mr. T. Williams, M.B.G.A. (Coldhrok). Both expressed their appreciation of the high quality of the exhibits, which would compare favourably with those of much larger shows. The entries were not quite so numerous, but this was well made up for in quality. In the Assembly Room Miss M. Morris presided over a fancy needlework stall and also had charge of the competitions. There were four who tied in the competition for guessing the weight of a cake-Miss Corrie Price. (Aberga- venny), Mr. Jasper, Mr. Geo. Green and Miss Preece—and after a consultation as to the ad- visability of drawing for the prize, it was decided to cut it in quarters. The tea arrangements were well looked after by Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Gwillim. In the evening the Assembly Room was cleared, and an enjoyable dance programme was gone through, the National Reserves Band playing the music. The awards w ere as follows :— SECTION I (OPEN). BEN TAYLOR AGAIN. I At a special Police Court at Abergavenny on Friday last, Benjamin Taylor was charged with three offences—with doing malicious damage to a window, value 6s., at the Rothesay Hotel, willi being drunk and disorderly, and with assaulting P.C. Oram. P.C. Calder said he and P.C. Oram had great trouble in getting the defendant to the Police Station. He tried to trip witnesses up, and they had eventually to put him into a cab. P.C. Oram said defendant kicked him on the head and legs. P.-Sergt. Prosser said defendant was like a madman. He was half naked and his boots had to be taken off so that he could not do any injury by kicking. He shouted himself to sleep in the cell. Defendant objected to the magistrates who were sitting (Mr. Edwin Foster and Mr. H. C. Steel) and applied for permission to call wit- nesses. This was granted, and defendant was remanded till Wednesday.

ABERGAVENNY BOARD OF GUARDIANS. PROPOSED SEVERANCE OF BLAENAVON, The fortnightly meeting was held on Friday. Present Major Williams, chairman Mrs. Hiley, Rev. D. 15. Hughes, Rev. J. F. Walwyn Truniper, Rev. Father Wray, and Messrs. Geo. Davies, B. Price, Robert Workman, John Lewis, John Baynam, John Pricliard, W. L. I)ocid, I, W. Lewis. John Watkins, Joseph tioweils, win. Gwillim, George Spencer, M. W. David. I Proposed Children's Home. I The Clerk (Mr. W. H. 1'. Seaulon) reported on the question of a children's home, and said that o. 52, Castle-street were the premises the Com- mittee. had in view. Mr. J. Weeks had written to the effect that he would rent them the house at £ 30 per annum, on a lease of 20 years, tenant take the house in its present condition, while Mr. Weeks would keep in repair the roof and exterior. The Committee recommended the Guardians to rent the premises, hut before the Board came to any decision he advised them to see the house and judge for themselves. Father Wray It will very likely depend on Mr. Williams, Local Government Board In- spector, when he visits. The Clerk said it was for the Board them- selves to first see the premises and satisfy them- selves that they were suitable. He recom- mended them to visit the house at the con- clusion of the meeting. They might decide buy them they were in the market. Mr. Morgan David asked whether the Local Government Board were in favour of taking such premises. The Clerk Mr. Williams, when lie comes, will inspect them. The fact that you have these premises in view is before the Local Government Board. I informed them after the last meeting. You won't adopt the recommendation to take the premises at present. You will have to wait until Mr. Williams's visits. Rev. J. F. W. Trumper We can't hind our- selves down to take the place until we get the sanction of the Local Government Board. Mr. George Davies Whatever we do will be subject to the approval of the Local Government Board. Rev. J. F. W. Trumper Have the Local Government Board certified their approval to the selling of the workhouse yet ? The Clerk No. Mr. Trumper Why the delay ? The Clerk The Local Government Board have instructed Mr. Williams to confer with the I Guardians on the matter. Mr. John Pricliard Can't we pass a resolution to-day recommending that we take the premises, instead of waiting for another fortnight ? Rev. J. F. W. Trumper Can't we write to Mr. Williams at once impressing upon him the necessity of haste in the matter of selling the Workhouse ? If he does not hurry-, the whole thing may fall through. Father Wray They know it as well as we do. Rev. J. F. W. Truniper Well, they don't act accordingly. Mr. John Baynam I am afraid there is now a more serious matter than the question of tlie Wort; house. ig* Mr. Trumper: Oil, I don't know. Mr. Morgan David said that the Local Govern- ment Board had been badgering them in refer- ence to the house for the last 12 or 15 years, and when the Gua.rdians were just putting things right the Local Government Board seemed to be doing nothing. Father Wray It is other people who have been badgering us, not the Local Government Board. The Chairman proposed that they should visit the premises and accept the recommendation of the committee, subjcct to the sanction of.the Local Government Board. Mr. Robert Workman seconded. Father Wray I don't believe in conditional things. Mr. Morgan David It is too serious to adopt the recommendation of any single committee. The better plan would be to adjourn the meeting and come back here. If public business is not worth ten minutes' time it is not worth anything. Rev. J. F. W. Triiiiiper Shall we march two and two. (Laughter). Mr. Morgan David I don't want you to walk with me if you are ashamed. (Laughter). I propose that we adjourn to visit the house, and come back here to deliberate. Rev. J. F. W. Trumper seconded. The Chairman was proceeding to put the -Tt WOTI,1-11?,11-1 ,a i c i 'Voit motion, when Mr. Robert Workman said You have not withdrawn your motion which I seconded, or asked mv consent, and I object. The Chairman apologised, Mr. Workman agreed to withdraw, and the motion of Mr. Morgan David was carried. The Clerk That is what I have recommended from the first. j The Marquess's Satisfactory Terms. I The Clerk reported that there were certain matters connected with the proposed purchase of the Workhouse by the Marquess of Aber- gavenny which were rather indefinite. It was said that it did not include the three cornered piece of ground, and it was only verbally stated that it did not include the boilers, and so on. It was necessary that there should be some definite understanding in writing, and he there- fore wrote to his Lordship stating that the Guardians had, subject to the sanction of the Local Government Board, accepted the offer made by him to Major Williams (the chairman) and Mr. George Davies of 7,3.000 for the Union Workhouse at Abergavenny. The Guardians understood that the purchase would include all buildings and the land on which they stood, together with the garden, but not the three- cornered piece of land on the south-eastern side of the railway. They also understood that it would not include the boilers, furnaces, baths, grates, laundry- equipment, or fittings of any kind, and they would be glad to be informed if that was in accordance with his Lordship' wishes and intentions. He received a letter on the 25th July from Mr. R. L. Baker, who had been acting for the Marquess, saying lie was in- structed to supply the particulars asked for, and applying for a copy of the letter which had been sent to his Lordship. Mr. Baker subsequently wrote "I have heard from the Marquess of Abergavenny this morning that he accepts the terms contained in your letter to him of the 15th—(hear, hear)—subject to the provision for payment of interest at a rate to be subsequently agreed upon on the £ 3,000 purchase money from the date of completion of the purchase until vacant possession is given up to his Lordship. Please put this letter before your meeting and let me have a reply so that the draft contract can be prepared." The Chairman We ought to write to Mr. Williams. Rev. J. F. W. Trumper He ought to he in- formed that we are very much disappointed he was not here to-day. Time is going on, and we shall very likely lose our chance. The Clerk said he would write to Mr. Williams impressing upon him the necessity- of making his dsit as soon as possible. Mr. Morgan David You can say a little more than that. You can say that the Guardians were very much disappointed lie was not here to-day, and that some of them had travelled many miles to come in to see him. (Laughter). Rev. J. F. W. I The Clerk reported that lie Had asked. tnree ladies if they would become members of the Boarding-out Committee, and two of them- Mrs. Williams (Nantvgwithel) and Mrs. Lewis (Cwmyoy Vicarage) had consented. Porter Called Up. I The Master reported that on Wednesday the porter at the Workhouse, who was a Reservist, left to join his regiment at Cardiff. The Board I authorised him to engage temporary clerk, assistance and also" decided that a temporary- I porter be advertised for. Mr. Williams's Absence. I I The Clerk read a telegram from Air. II. R. Williams, Local Government Board Inspector. who explained his absence on the ground that lie was detainefl at an important meeting in London. Mr. Williams promised to visit Aber- gavenny as early as possible in the next fort- night. Butcher and Meat Contract. I The Clerk read a letter from Mr. D. E. Wil- liams, butcher, to the effect that, in view of the grave developments of the European crisis, he regretted to inform the Board that owing to the lessened quantity of meat obtainable and the increased demand, lie was not in a position to supply the Guardian at the contract price. Their early reply with instructions would oblige, and he could assure them of the lowest possible market price. The Clerk said that Mr. Williams must com- plete his three months' contract, which expired on the 30th September, and then the Board could go into the question of enhanced prices. Mr. Robert Workman I don't think Mr Williams need fear that the Board will not treat è him in a gentl manly manner. I Relieving Officership. I The Clerk read a letter from the Registrar General, who suggested that the ofiiec-s of relieving officer and registrar of births and deaths for the Blaenavon district should, as heretofore, be combined when the new appoint- ment was made. í Proposal to Separate Blaenavon. r I I I Mr. John rricnaru gave notice oi mouou 101 the next meeting that a committee be appointed to consider what steps could be taken to sever their connection with Blaenavon, before they proceeded any further with the proposed new Workhouse. Mr. Joseph Howells asked what Mr. Pricliard meant by a committee ? Did he mean a com- mittee of Abergavenny Guardians ï Mr. Prichard replied that he meant a com- mittee to be appointed by the whole Board.

MANCHESTER UNITY OF ODDFELLOWS AMD I THE WAR. The Board of Directors have just issued a circular calling the attention of Districts and Lodges to the large number of members engaged in active service in connection with the War, and recommending eae II Lodge and District to take such steps as may be deemed advisable to keep these members in compliance on the Independent side of the Society. in many Lodges practically the whole of the members are engaged in active service. That in connection with the funds which are being raised for the alleviation of distress arising from the war, Districts and Lodges be advised to place themselves in communication with the local committees, and inform them that the machinery of the Manchester Unity will be placed at the disposal of each committee for administering the relief. The latter part of this circular has been com- municated to the Local Committee, through Alderman Z. Wheatley, Acting Mayor.
