Th^ Mayor was appointed chair- man, My. Percy .Jacob, J.P., tieasurer, and Mr. Percy J i oiey (^Jpretary- of the branch) as secretary. in an address of the work of the local branch Mr. l'üley said that they were out to fight against the duplication of ap- pointments which hapix?ned ahu'^t week week. There were men holding three: apt>iiniiiivnts in the town, each at j money which d. discliaiged soldier would b.' very pleased to have. Referring to the appointment by the Nc.4itli Board of Guardians of Miss Beynon to the ixist of i iegktrar for the Margam sub-district, at about t;.i\HI a year he reminded them that cut of 19 applicants tor the post there were nine dischargvxl soldiers, all posses- I ting, lie huk if, the neceitary qualitica- j tioiis. But, lie alleged, without looking at the? qURlijicatious one af thqir L??t i g<nt!??pQ though; L proper that the a;> tlioiiglit 1, pr,)p?er that the. a;)- Heyuon. H did ¡wt Blink it right tbt a j single lady, on he ■ first appointment, should be in receipt of £ 400 a year where discharged soldiers appliod tor the a; i>oiniment. The applications of the dis- charged soldiers wer-e absolutely ignored <ftt thp plea that the appointment Avas only for the duration of the war. Their men had enlisted fpr the duration of the. war to iiglit on behalf of the people of this I, country, and they should have a right to ccmiderntion f( r this post for the dura- tion of tho war, at haf't. Their branch meant to fight the tyranny that ?xiat?ed in the town, where a few absolutely tried to run the district. The branch had decided t, go further in the matter of the Neath j appointment, and circularise their hnuichM. with 7,i.WO members, to 6ck? | whether- this decision could not be over- ruled, l>ecause the Registrar-General had distiUCilYSUid that all other things being coral, discharged soldiers should have preference. A SKEWEN DISCUSSION. I At.Tuesday's -meeting of the Ooedfiranc Parish Council, Councillor Slee called it. tention jo the recent appointment by the Neath Bourd of Guardians of a young lady as rate collector, at a salary of £ 100 a year, while young men who had fougut for our freedom ip France were left out iri the cold. Ha would like to know whether the men in the running were ac- C(;p Could they a-sk their local re- presentatives to meet them and give an explanation ? t i l it it was Councillor Johns thought it was a question for the interested parties, and they should interview the representatives. Councillor Reason thought Mr. Slee h td raised a pertinent question, and was quite right in.doing so. Men who had doue their bit fo- their King and country should be considered. The job was ad- ertised, and it wi-i open for anyone to apply for it. But did they know enough about the case to decide whether it was right or wrong for the young lady to hfive it? Was t'he soldier competent? If they could get the councillors there thff ecu id get information from them why the young larly was appointed in preference to the ex-sojdiers. By the casting vnte of the chairman 't was decided to ask the local district coun- cillors to attend the special meeting.
