We are at. least three ye;ys behind our task, and unless some action is j speedily initia-ted the splendid scheme will fade cut of the realm ot possibilities. Ma ay months ago a committee was formed for the purpose of laying down the founda- tions of a comprehensive scheme. Gentlemen were co-opted to it who were thought, to be useful in various capacities. The committee met one afternoon, appointed an honorary secretary, planned its programme, and talked over the general pros- pects. It was never called together again! In the meantime the Town Clerk had discovered that the financial part of the proposals was unsound: that,, technically speak- ing, no legal provision could be I made for money grants—or some- thing of the sort. At any rate, the upshot of the tthole business was that die matter was mentioned to the Council, and left to be looked into, or arranged, or regularised.' Since when—silence. We have no fault to tind with the intervention ] ,,i: l of tlie Town Clerk, who would have been remiss in his duty hau he not pointed out the obstacles. But the Council is greatly to blame for letting the business go to sleep. Tt may be thought tluvl: we are a.tf aching far too much im portance to the question. We tiiink not. We are-trying to view things througn the glasses of 1040 ur thereabouts. Then, if we continue to sleep, and no museum is erected in Swan- sea, our descendants will wonder what sort of people we were that, living in the most mteTesting age' the world has ever Known, we did not gather together the trophies that particularly concerned the town. They will read of the hun- dreds of Swansea men who gave their lives in order to free the world, a?d wcnder why no one thought of collecting their photographs so ?hft c c?' itc-,eting th(-,Ir so thnt mila-lif. not only cherish their memory but Keep in mind then* very features. They will see else- where the curiosities of trench war in 1915 and 1916 and ask was it not possible to preserve and bring to Swansea those which have proud associations for the town. There are literally hundreds of "souvenirs" of distinctive Swan- sea interest. And unless they are collected now—we are already so late that it will be difficult—thvy will never be brought together for the instruction and the warning 01 our children. As a result of the present exhibi- tion, we sincerely hope the Museum project will be awakened from sleep. If there are legal difficlll- t-ies in the wftv of obtaining muni- cipal grants that cannot be over- come—and we are not convinced of this—then let a start be mado upon a voluntary basis. The war will be spc-ken and written oi for an other baif-cent-u-iV or more. Our children's children at Swansea'' will be nursed with tale-s of it.
