I HEROIC LOCAL AIRMAN. In the larost supplement to the Lon- don Gazette," the following is given in connection with the M.C. awarded to Lieut. J. S. Chick, R.F.C., son of Mrs. Chick, Wern-road, Skewen. I Tin<l Lt. J. S. Chick, R.F.C. (ILC.). while leading a patrol of four machines over the enemy's lines, attacked, an I enemy two-seater machine, which his 11' observer drove down completely out of control. Shortly afterwards the patrol engaged 19 enemy machines; he dived on to the uppermost machine, and drove it down in a series of spins and side- slips completely out of control. On another oc- casion bis formation. consisting of five machines, attacked 25 enemy aeroplanes. He destroyed one of the enemy, and drove down another out of control. Just 21 yeare of age, he joined the R.E/s in December, 1914. as a dispatch rider. During his period at the front he was severely wounded in the hand. He is-an expert violinist, and was Associate of the College of Violinists. He is an oid pupil of Neath County School, whither he pro- ceeded from the Coedffranc Council I School, Skewen..In addition to the M.C. he was promoted lieutenant on the field.

LLANDILO AFFAIRS. I Mr, Jno. Richards preesided over the monthly meeting of the Llandilo Rural Dis- trict Council. It was decided to support the appeal for exemption of XLr. Thomas, surveyor, who had been placed in grade 2, and that similar steps be taken in the oaae of other officers called iVfi. Mr. Griffiths (surveyor) reported that the improvement near Rhydymeirch, Llansawel, had been carried out and it was decided that applioation be made for the balance between Q14 and 415 of the local contribu- tions towards Port,h Bridge towards the present improvement. At Neath and I Aberavon the ehildi-t-n were given a good time, but at Britonferry the kiddies had to take second plaeft. The mission just conclifd^d by Captain Gay Thornton, C.F., and Mrs. Thornton I ut Britonferry in connection with the 1'ree Churclr Council was a very great success, The death has iaken place at Briton- ferry of Mr. David Griffiths, of Ynysy- maerdy-road, after an illness extending 1 over ten years. Deceased was 4B years of age, and was previous to his illness a mason at the steelworks. He leaves a widow and one daughter. Mr. H. R. Howells, jeweller, Briton- ferry, has presented the local Weelevan Church with a beautiful individual Com- munion service in memory of his brother, Lieut. the Rpv. Wesley Ho well*, R.F.C., who wae killed in action in Palestine last I vear.

LLANSAMLET. I A repeat performance of the Welsh drama, Ar y Groesfford, was given by the Plasmarl Dramatic Society at the Ebenezer Hall, on Saturday evening. Aid. Jordan presided. The Crye-tal Cup was performed in character by the Tabor Choir under the conductorsliip of Mr. J. B. Jordan, at the Parish Hall, Councillor J. Jenkins presiding. 1

NEATH. i On leaving Neath to take up important I duties at headquarters, Cardiff, Mr. Bert Stephn8, chief tribunal clerk at the Drill Hall, Neath, wa? presented on Wednes- day with a case of pi?s and pouch by Capt. Walter E. Rees and staff. News has reached Neath that Second Lieut. A. P. Charles has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and devo- Iotjon to duty under fire. He is the son of Lieut.-Colonel R. P. Charles, and was educated at King's College and Sand- hurst, and received his commission in the Royal Fusiliers. He went to France in Alay, 1916, and is only 19 years of agB. lIe is the nephew of Ald. H. P. Charles, J.P., ex-Mayor of Neath, and grandson of Yr. John Rees, J.P., Neath. The Cymmer Glee Singers, under the baton of Mr. Jones, entertained the sick and wounded Tommies at the Neath and District War Hospital on Tuesday. Organic "I by the Neath Sunday School Union, the annual Whitsmi festival was he-id on Monday. Representative of tho i Nonconformist schools, several thousaivl scholars. ministers and officials assembled in the Station Square, where a short ser- vice was held. A strictly war rationing tea was followed by games and races, 1 which were entered into with much zest, j The pationbs t.nd staff at the Neath and District War Hospital had a musical treat on Whit-Monday evening, when one oi: The Music in War Time Concert Par- ties (under the auspices of the British Red Cross Society, London), gave a fine programme. At a meeting of the Neath Sunday School Union, it was iin-animously de- cided to hold the ennual Whit-Mondav festival, and to carry out a programme on the usual lines. The scholars will bo asked to provide their own sugar. A good supply of cake, butter, and bread has been assured. It is expected that Z1 Sunday Schools will be represented in the pro- cession. Mrs. Clinch, of Tonna, was responsible for a most successf ul concert at the Neath and District War Hospital on Thursday evening. The following contributed: The Misses V. Davies, Price, P. PORT TALBOT. Under the auspices of Port Talbot and Aberavon Discharged Sailore and Soldiers' Federation, a baseball match "between selected teems from Cardiff and Aber- avon was played at Sandfields on Whit- Monday in aid of the Federation. Before the match a team of discharged soldiers engaged men of the Royal Defence Corps in a tug-of-war. The R.D.C. won by three pulls to two. Port Talbot Sunday Schools had their anoxia I treat on Whit-Monday on a modi- ^j fied scale. I

SKEWEN. I The Unionists of Skewen and ISeativ Abbey have eeleded Mrs. J. C. Beynon to act on their Executive Committee, with a view to the organising of the wo- men voters. The old-time custom of providing teas for the children of the Sunday Schools and for the members generally was adhered to in Skewen and Neath Abbey, and, thanks to the splendid spirit of co- operation and sacrifice shown by mally, no insurmountable difficulty Tra-^ ?x- pcrK'B«d in procuring the usual pro- visions. Many men in the firing line m letters home had expressed their wish that the Sunday Schools should carry on as usual. Among the well-wishers va.s Sir Samuel Evans. At the Skewen Lower Council School on Tuesday evening local Unionists met to make arrangements in preparation for the next general election, Mr. Tom Thomas, the district Unionist organiser, being present. Mr. F. G. Way, "Goshen,0 and Dr. D. L. Jones, were selected as cliairinan and vice-chairman respectively, of the Coedffranc and Dyffryn Clydach joint committee, and Mr. David James, hon. sec.
