I GIFTS TO SOLDIERS. I Commanding Officer Returns Thanks to Port Talbot. On Wednesday afternoon and evening i there was a scene of great activity in the Aberavon Council Chamber, when the Mayor (Councillor W. T. Williams) and a number of ladies and gentlemen, aesii-ted by shop assistants of the town, were busily engaged in packing parcels of clothing for the local soldiers and sailors who are with the colours both home and abroad. Each parcel to the purchasing value of 15s., contained a vest body belt, head cover, 2 pairs of socks, mittens, 60 cigar- ettes, matches, sweets, and a Christmas card. The number of parcels packed and sent away was 500 at a cost of £200, of which sum £ 148 has already been sub- scribed to the fund. Mr. S. H. Byass, J.P., has also sent 61 similar parcels of clothing, together with a flannel shirt to his employes from the Mansel Tinplate Works who have joined the Colours. A similar movement has been inaugurated by the Marram Dis- trict Council to send similar Christmas comforts to those with. the' Colours from the Port Talhot and Margam District, and a/fund for this purpose has been started. Writing from Marcham Camp on the 14th inst.. Major Ll. ijavid, Port Talbot, commanding the B.H.A., says:—" On behalf of the officers and men, I write to thank all those who have kindly tent such a splendid collection of warm gar- ments for the men of the Glamorgan Royal Horse Artillery. The clothes will add greatly to their comfort and well- being, and they much appreciate the kind thought, labour, and generosity of those who have contributed and worked for them."

I "SCANDAL AND DISGRACE." I Aberavon Protests Against Restriction on Soldiers' Wives. At the Aberavon Town Council meeting on Wednesday night, the Mayor (Councillor W. J. Williams) presiding, Mr. Jas. Price. in accordance with a notice of motion, moved: "That the Council petition the Gov- ernment to withdraw the recent War Office circular to the police regarding the sur- veillance of soldiers' and sailors' wives." When he had brought on a previous motion in regard to the pay of soldiers' depend- ents he had been given to understand that this odious order had been withdrawn. Since then, however, the War Ofrtee had referred the matter to the Home Office and the Criminal Inyestigation Department. It was, he said, enough to make a mans blood boil to find" that the wivcs of men who were gallantly fighting at tbo front should be treated as criminals. He had wracked his brain as to the reason of such an Order, and had aaked himself if it was to en- courage recruiting or as an example to other nations to show them what a fine nation this was to put the wives of their soldiers under police protection. The Order w&s a. ecandal and a disgrace to the nation. Mr. T. S. Goslin seconded, and said that he felt in duty bound to do so as it came very near to him as one who had fought for the oountry- If when he was away at the front he knew that bis wife had been placed under police protection he should have felt like throwing his ritle down. The motion was carried unanimously.

ALIENS' WIVES. NEATH GUARDIANS AND THE QUESTION OF RELIEF. How the Guardians should relieve British- bom wives of aliens was again the subject of discussion at the fortnightly meeting of the Neath lioard of Guardians on Wednesday. Mr. I.,evi James, who raised the question, eaid the decision of the Board at the last meeting to relieve them on the same basis as their own poor was not stricuy in ac- cordince with the instructions contained in the circular from the Local Government Board. He contended that the Guardians were simply agents, and it was their duty to grant 8s. a week to each adult and 18 6d per child. The money was provided out of a. special Government grant, and did not belong to the Guardians. The Joint Clerk ¡.\Ir. E. Powell): You have decided on a question of policy, and as a. result you will not. deal more generously with the wives of aliens than your own poor. If you desire to alter it, you must give notice to rescind that resolution. Mr. Moore: What will these people do in the meantime? The Clerk: The same aa your own people. Mr. John Thomas pointed out that the Relief Committee had that day dealt with 16 caees, and it would be unwise to upset the machinery now. Mr. W. Thomas pointed out that at Clyn- Neath there were two very respectable women who were entitled to 8s. a. week, but they only got, 6s. If Mr. James was correct in his remarks, he could only say it was a shame. Mr. Morgan: In my district there is a woman with eight children, and she i5 getting tl a week. That is generous enough. INCREASED COST OF POOD. Mr. Levi Jacaes gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution at the next meeting, and to take into consideration the question of an all-round increase in ont-door relief owing to the increased price of foodstuffs. The spending power of a sovereign to-day was 13s. 9d., he said, and he h'Ad every reason to believe that it would become less. It was decided to grant extra Christmas relief to the extent of 1". for each adult and 6d. per child, including boarding-out children
