STEADY!
STEADY! The war is not won. The war still presents hard problems. It will demand the exercise of all our fortitude before the blessed day comes when General Headquarters sends the signal flashing to London that an armistice has been signed with Germany. Probably winter will come and go before we can look forward exultantly to the nearness of peace. Therefore let us steady ourselves. Let us keep a tight rein upon our emotions. Let us curb our expectations. "It's a long, long way to—" Enough for the hour, for the day, that we are gal- loping along the road as speedily and as* triumphantly as Allenby's cavalry rode over the field of Arma- geddon to Nazareth. The Bulgarian has thrown up his hands. The Turk is wondering how best to get out of the grip of his German over-lord. The Austro-Hungarian clamours for peace. And the Boche is being hammered and smashed by Foch- blows, and his defences are going. If we can't rejoice over the things that Are, without flying to thought of the things that Are to Be, We have lost our old-time phlegm. A dozen things are possible as the outcome of Bulgaria's surrender. Turkey may give up the contest. The Balkans may be re-established. Serbia—gallant, faithful Serbia— may come fully into her own again -an d a little more. These are mercies that may flow in with the, high tides of October. But, dwell- ing upon the things accomplished rather than upon those we hope to do, the great present consequence is that the German corridor to the East, her right of way to the. reali- sation of Mittel-Europe—a vaster Empire than ever dazzled the eyes of Napoleon-is closed. We have never given encouragement here to the views of the Easterners who found in the Balkans, and beyond, the easiest route to victory; it is in the West the shock of battle is to decide the mastery of the world and not via Alleppo or Muslimie. The East, however, is a war theatre in which momentous war issues have to be decided. Germany baffled in Flanders and France, sought her recompense in the other direction. She fought, she intrigued. The story of her machinations in Persia is yet to write. If the West eluded her, if dreams of Channel command fwitia t-h<& looiiorung oâ bar hoJd upon the Nieuport-Vosges line, at least the glorious East beckoned to her invitingly- Mittel-Europe, the ideal of a vast bloc across the Con- tinent and extending into Asia, under German economic control, was swept away at twelve o'clock yesterday when Bulgaria signed the convention of surrender. So Grermany bides a long fare- well to those dreams of Eastern control, and her bagmen' wonder where in this cold but angry world they will be able t-o plank the out- put of their country after the war. With Mittel-Europe, and its vast eastern market, gone, where shall they travel with their price-lists? Nemisis will come even without sworn solutions and solemn vows. And if in the East the present is enough to satisfy us, what of the West, where the trench-system has failed Germany; where her line of earthen fortresses between the sea and the Champagne are now curiosi- ties for future sight-seers far be- hind the line 01 our armies; where the daily reports of Allied victories grow confusing so many they are 1 The pirates' lairs at Ostend and Zeebrugge, headquarters of the vilest, cruelest war trade the world has ever known, are getting in- secure. The Flanders ridges are ours, and Passchendaele, where so many Welsh lives were given last year in the effort to turn the sea- flank or break it. The Messines ridge is ours, Messines that once thrilled us with its mighty volcano- burst. And, to Cymric hearts the most wonderful of all mercies, Gheluvelt is again ours, Gheluvelt of the immortal stand of the South Wales Borderers. We should like to-day to stand-no, to kneel, for it is sacred soil to us, and indeed its dust is very Wales because of the dead of our race there—we should like to kneel upon that cross road near the village, and render thanks for that the mighty Borderers did not hold the fort in vain. Carry the tale on to that plain where industrial Lille with its myriad chimneys is awaiting the day of its deliverance—how long its people have waited; to that pros- pect against which Bourlon Wood rises with twin-breasts to remind us that here also Welshmen fought and fell; to old-world Cambrai of the glorious cathedral; to pleasant St. Quentin; to that road over the hills called by the French the Ladies Boad, enriched by the blood of tens of thousands; to the wooded Argonne and the mountainous Voeges! Take up the story in sequence of these. releases. Dwell upon the meaning of the things actually accomplished. And then, with steady and patient hearts, we can wait for the inevitable day when Germany also will send par- liamentieres into Foch's camp and sign it convention of armistice. Fear not, nor be dismayed, 012 strong and of
