CYCLING & MOTORING. —— (Br '"THE WANDERER.") Father Bernard Vaughan has boldly at- tacked the mid-Victorian idea of the dismal Sabbath. "The old Christian idea of Sun- day is a day of reet from servile work," he says. not. fron merriment and pastime." He pleads for a portion of Sunday to be de- voted to recreation and refreshment of the body to meet the week's arduous strain." Some of my most delightful ex- periences have been to drop into a. little country chtrch for morning or evening ser- i vice. The simplicity of our rural churches, the sweetness of the surr-ountlings the at- mosphere of real religion as distinct from the garish show of city edifices aopea.1s to any country-lover. Even those to whom the church does not appeal will receive far more benefit from a dav awheel in the fresh country air than in loafing about, a city. I am an old enough cyclist to recall the days when it was regarded as a mort-al bin to rifle a hicycle on a Sunday. In the eighties I was a member of a club organ- ised exclusively for, Sunday cycling. We were pariahs I know members who would ride down back ways rather tham risk be- ing seen going to the club meet. I have a .vivid recollection of being barred from one house the lady of which did not consider that a young man who cycled on Sunday was a fit associate for her sons and daugh- ters. It is difficult to believe these things nowadays, but any old cyclist will confirm my experience. In those daya a few clergy- men were brave enough to encourage the movement. They did it at considerable risk io their preferment. But gradually a. broader spirit spread Many of those who have had their motor. cars converted to the use of gas instead of petrol have been very favourably impressed by the ease with which they are able to start their engines. Particularly noticeable is this at the present time when much of the petrol is ,of such poor Quality. s But starting is bound to be easier when running on gas than on petrol. however excellent the latter may bo in quality. owmg to the fact that gas ia alrÈmdv in the true.gaseons form. and the mechanical admixture of the gas molecules with the air is obtained per- fectly and without any extraneous aid. such as a jet or choke tube. This ia certainly an advantage of using gas. especially with large care and during very cold weather.
