ISWANSEA'S YOUNG HOPES |
I SWANSEA'S YOUNG HOPES | ——-— Breathing Exercise for the Naval Brigade. Many interesting drills have been in ore- gross during the past week at the Old Castle Naval Brigade lieadon art era To the-c j physic-al exercises have been added-, for the i head. arms, legs, and easy trunk move- melit-s with proper breathing to help the lungs to perform their natural functions, Looking rolind in daily life we are often f astonished to find how elementary science has beeif'n-egleett-d., LACKOFTRAttsttNG. For young people frequently evince un. due fatigue after the slightest exerf;. and betray, by laboured breathinir how handicapped they are through lack 01 training. Another instance of this is see,] in uncultured singers, who crimson anu quiver when reaching the toy notes in their .sonf? The reason for this is that they sin? anyhow, and have never paid prpner attefc- t-ion to voice production. But when the re grettable involuntary, trembling cf th,, voice, called" viLlato" is persisted in we j lirow that the singer is doomed, and ><xm will be incapable of sounding a true note. We should tltercfore endweavour to strengthen the talents we possess by judicious mental and ohjsical training. OPEN AJR EXERCISE. j An unique single stick display was given on the Sands last Saturday byfJtt\- two boys of the Swansea Nava] jjrjgade ac- comt-amed by their Commodore (Lieut Job. Mod?eiM. O.B.E.), and Chief Instructor Ash- bury, they marched gaily from heau ftua.rteri: about 4 6 clock in t?be afternoon, armd and fi.l1 d with' bquurayrt, erws. ith their weapons and ftll d with delight at the opportunity of e.%e"lsing in the open air The various movements of offensive and defensive were excellent and these were followed by an exhibition of loose play," which was exceedingly pretty. It is a very fascinating pastime and at the ?me time. iti? of great use in trainmg j tbc- Fame timdei, .?,'Per weakness in their op- ponents and to eBcourag?' quicknœ 8 of ponent? ? and to encourav' quickp.eas of FOOTBALL A football match. Port v. Starboard, was also played that afternoon. the teams being captained respectively bv P.O. Ewings and 0. Loosemore. The Commodore kicked off. and after an exciting same the result was: Port, three goals: Starboard, nil. BANQ PRACTISES. As some of the original members of the. Brigade musicians have either gone to Aes or found employment in other towns. As- sistant Bandmaster Williams has started UPW classes for those wh.) wish to fill up the vacancies. These are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Old Swansea. Castle. It is. however very gratifying to note that whenever these youths return from tea. they always tak-3 up their instru- ments on special occasions if they chance to be on leave, and join in with their for- mer companion* in the IBrigáde. "Anchor's Weighed. C.L.B. NOTES. I C.L.B-OTES. t The 1st St. David's Battalion Church Lads' Brigade Cadets has had another busy week, and the friendly competition be- tween the various platoons comprising the battalion is on the increase. To this friendly competition can undoubtedly be at- ( tributed much of the success of the bat- I talion for each enthusiastic epldet-and I there are very few locally who are other- wise—tries to make his platoon the best in, the district, with the natural result that. while every lad has this one subject a his goal each platoon is bound to flourish. GARDENING COMPETITION. Major Donafflson. commanding officer of St. Gabriel's Company, is now starting a, gardening competition in coanection with that unit. The Cadets and Training Corps I lads will cultivate their own gardens and lifter in the year prizes of 11, 15s., 10s.. and 5: each will be awarded to the owners of the four plots on which the best garden produce is grown. Many lads have entered and there is going to be some exceptionally keen competition. PROGRESS AT HA-FOD. Good progress is being made by Hafod platoon, and during the week a visit has been paid by Major T Thomas (Battalion officer) who gave the lads a test, and im- parted some useful instruction to them. NEW WARRANT OFFICER. Jlr. Graham Lloyd, of Blackpill b»s now been appointed Warrant Officer ~n St. Gabriel's Company, and his '"warrant' was handed to him at the recent distribu- tion of decorations held in connection with that company. Mr. Lloyd who is an old C.L.B.-ite. is a competent authority on am- bulance work. WAR SERVICE BADGES. War service badges* are being issued from London Headquarters of the C.L.B. Cadets, and may be worn by members of ^he organ- isation who have been or %re dennitely upon war work. Ambulance duty. air raid bugle duty. guarding of premises, etc.. and such like will be rcarded as legitimate I grounds for the issue of these badges. D0 tails of actual war servico rendered have to be given to Headquarters by Command- ing Officers when ordering. The badgc3 are. not to be worn when in uniform COL,ONEt..S RESIGNATION. There is shortly to be a change in thp High Command" of the 1st St. David's. for Col. W. Llew. Morgap. who has been in command for many years, is relinquishing this position (wing to advancing years The Colonel has always taken a very keen interest in C.L.B. doings. and his resigna- tion has been received with deep regret by all connected with the* movement locally. CONGRATULATIONS. Congratulations to Cadet Captain Wilfred Vaughan Jones, commanding officer of St. James's platoon on his recent marriage at I Bath.
