BR YN AMMAN. In aid of the widow of the late Mr. Philip Morgan, Mountain-road, Brynamman, a j benefit concert was held at the Alphn Cinema on Wednesday evening, when Ald. W. J. Wtilliams presided. The Gwaun- cae-Gurwen Prize Band was in attendance and played selections under the conductor- ship of Afr. T. J. Reea and Mr. Tal Morris. The foHowing artistes participated: Mrs. Tom Rets (0-.7aun-cae>-(Inrwen>. Mr. John Evans (Gwa^un-cae-Gurweu), Mr. Oswald D,-i.vic-s (GAvaiin-cae-Giiriven), and Mr. Arthur Williams (Brynamman). Mr. Tom Davies accompanied.

The funerd bok place at St. Peter s Church, P.mtardawe, on Thursday, of Masters BiL'ie and Jackie Howells, the two youijgesi: children of -Mr. and Mrs. Bert Howflls. of Quarr-road, Pontarclawe. The former died on Sunday night, and the latter 21 hours later. Both bodies were enclosed in one cotnn- There wail a large and representative attendance at the funeral, which demonstrated the sym- pathy of the public with the family in their sad loss. The Revs. Joel Davies 1 vicar), W. Williams, and W. G. Jenkins officiated.

An interesting gathering of members of the R.A.O.B belonging to the Neath, pro- vince assembled at the Victoria Hotel, l'ortlicawl, for the purpose of raising a brother (Mr. Knight) to the third degree Prior to the raising. the Rector of Pyle (Rev. J. Arthur) presided. The visitors included breihren from the Talbot (Aberavon), E. Vernon Pegge (Briton- ferry). Prothero Thomas (Neath), W. R. Morgan (Slcewen), and other lodges. Tho installing officer was Mr. G. E. Harris* K.O.M., secretary of the Brcgden Lodge, I'ortheawl, who was ably assisted by the members of the Knights Chapter.

Preston presiding, a letter was read from the Trade and Labour Council, asking the Chamber to receive a deputation respecting the estab- lishment of an eight-hour day for shop assistants in the town. In the end it was resolved to hear the deputation at the next I meeting a fortnight hence.

At the usual meeting this week a sailors and soldiers fund was inaugurated and gene- rous response was given to the same. Owing to a dispute amon^ the day" men of the Albion Steel Works, a strike has taken place involving the stoppage of many of the other employes.

A committee was appointed to wait upon the Council. At Ystradgynlais police court on Thurs- day the chairman (Mr. G. II. Strick, J.P.) congratulated Inspector Thounas Evana upon his recent promotion, and expressed pleasure in seeing him back again to take charge of the Ystradgynlais district.

CWMTWRCH. The icatli if announced of Mr. Thomas Thomas, a well-known and respected Valley grocer, which occurrcd at Cwin- twrch on Thursday morning, following a severe illness. Deceased was fiO years of are and nome weeks ago contracted a eold which developed into pneumonia. He was a prominent figure in the district, for 40 years, and was one of the dflicgns at Beulah Baptist Chapel. Shortly, before the outbreak of war deceased and Mrs. Thomas paid a visit to Palestine. A meeting of the Cwmbwrla Allotment Society was held ;70t tho works canteen, when an address was delivered hy Mr. Phelps (Board of Agriculture), on how to manure, lime, sow and plant to the best advantage. Mr. D. Hussey, chairman of the society, presided.

The speakers included Councillor Henry Thomas, ex-supt., Neath; Mr. J. W. Jones, J.P., Swansea; W. J. Jenkins, Neath; and Mr. D. U. Davies. Mr. A. Price (assistant superintendent, Neath), Miss Maud Thomas, and Mrs. Geo. Par- sons contributed to the programpae. Supt. W. J. Jenkins distributed the prizes for best average in naw business to the following: 1, Mr. D. Jones, Glyn-Neath; 2, Miss Evans, Resolven; 3, Miss Evans, Llansamlet; 4, Miss Jenkins, Cadoxton; 5, Miss Davies, Neath.

"TALMAS" DEAD. Rev. Win. Walters Passes Away at Gorseinon. On Thursday morning the death took place of the Rsy. Wm. Walters (" Tal- )nai "), poet-preacher, at his residence, 5, West-street, Gorseinon. Deceased had served an active ministry in the Baptist cause, and for some time acted as minis- ter to the local chapel Noddfa. The lat- ter place was the scene of a memorable struggle on a Sunday morning some years ago between the rev. gentleman and part of'his flock, which no doubt undermined his health. He did much in private life and public speaking for the cause of King and country in the great Armageddon.

DENTIST WHO DESERTED. i At Milford Haven Police Court, before Mr. Win. John, a man giving the name of John Graham Marshall, an assistant employed by a local dentist,.was charged with failing to register under the Aliens Restrictions Act. Accused was remanded for inquiries to be made. He now admit- ted that he was a deserter from the R.A.M.C., aud that his name was Tabart Marshall. Ho was remanded to await a military escort.
