SKETTY ALLOTMENTS.
SKETTY ALLOTMENTS. Flourishing Society Taking Over More Land. (Contributed by E. A T.") It is vefy Interesting and instructive to note tho Stride;) the Sketty Allotments Socieiy, Ltd., has made during its short ex- istence. It is barely 12 months ?mce the in- ception of the society, and during this period they have been able to perfect their undertaking in a snr orisin manner. Tho omaial are now busy taking steps to carry ncrt the wish cf the (Sorernifiont by provid- ing further allotments for the people; and we give here a short outline of their pTO- poBltle, which. it 18 to be hoped, will be ..11 incentive to other societies to follow suit. In the first pla-ce. the applications already reoeived for next season are far in excess of the land available, with the retult that the society hafe decided to take over a fur- ther fire acres in close proximity to its pre- sent holdings. Commodious business premises have been loaded in Ever«ley-roed. which is shortly to be opened with & large stock of seed pota- toes, email seeds. fertilisers, artificial manures. garden tools, and eTery descrip- tion of gardening reciulsiteB It cannot be too strongly impressed upon the public gener- ally the necessity of Planting only immune varieties of seed potatoes: by eo doing, they not only do justieo to themselves, but to the country at largo The society ha. made heavy nut chases of the immune varieties only direct from the Government. It is also proposed later On to utilise the pro- mises as a .itetribntifie centre where all surplus produce can be disposea of THE CANNING PLANT. Another feature of tho society's undertak- ing is the panning plant installed on the premisea. This plant is capable of canning something like 600 quarts of fruit per day, and already a large amount of fruit of every description has béén canned and handed over to tho iocai Red Cross hos- pitals. A reading room is also being insti- tuted on the where members and others are welcomed. All the latest pub- lications and periodical* art available, And this will, no doubt, be utilised to thb fullest extent. Ladies are also invited, where they will be able to read and learn all there is to be known Itut iam making and fruit preserving. Yet another branch of the general under- taking is the establishing of a piggery. A will shortly be made with about 12 sucklings, and if succseeful, will be ex- tended. U-BOAT pasmon" OFFICIAL CURVES THAT- SHOW HOW WE STAND PRESS BUREAU, Thursday. The Secretary of the Admiralty makes the following announcement:— In view of the statement made by the First Lord of the Admiralty in the House of Commons on Thursday, 13th December, that the general curves of merchant ton- nage eunk by enemy action and of Ger- man submarines sunk are 6atisfactory;" it is thought that the public would be interested to see these curves, and tfhey are placed at the disposal of the Press accordingly. LOSSES BY ENEMY ACTION OF I MERCHANT TONNAGE, BRITISH, ALLIED, AND NEUTRAL. With regard to the first diagram, the height of the enemy submarine Attack Ur)(,ll merchantmen was in April, 1917, and that accounts for the quarter end- ing June shownig the peak," since when the curve has steadily fallen, and in the last quarter of this year has reached the same figure as in the hist auarter of 1916, which was before the Unrestricted submarine attack began. GERMAN SUBMARINES SUNK. I The seoond diagram shows that since the quarter endiag September* 1916, there has been a steady rise in the number of Submarines sunk, and altbough for the last quarter of 1917 the number eunk has not further risen, it must be remem- bored that there are still the reeults of half a month to add, and we have already equalled the results of the quarter end- ing September, 1917. Notes at the foot of the official dia- i grrms (of which ours are a reproduction) explain that they are statistically accu- rate and drawn to scale, but that ob- viously the scale is not the same in both, one being for tonnage of merchant ves- eels and the other the number of hb- rnannes
