AFTER THREE YEARS. When, in, the stirring early days of the war Lord Kitchener warned us that two years, probably three years, of conflict lay before us, we were incredulous. Not lightly did we enter upon the great struggle; but it was felt that the might of the Russian steam roller, the majesty of the British Navy, would crush the new menace of Europe in a matter of months, and that be- fore the first Christmas our lads would be home again. German sentiment ran along similar lines. The War Lord had promised his Huns their Christmas dinner in London—his own in Buckingham Palace. Enthusiasm ran rampant throughout Europe then. We were ready to give our all. We called for conscription, and accepted sacrifice a/s a welcome gift. That type of sentiment has gone. Britain is no whit less anxious to see the war through to a successful ter- mination than when. she first drew the sword in Liberty's name. In- deed, despite the shouts of minori. ties, our people have one desire— 6n early peace, it is true, but a peace that shall never again be shattered by the will of the Prussian War Lord. But in place of the old enthusiasm, which was of the heart, is a blood and iron de- termination, grim, immutable, un- hesitating. We watch the casualty list grow; we see the recordcl daily millions go up; once it Was three millions a day that staggered otir comprehension; to-day we con- template the prospect of nearly thrice that sum per. diem without turning a hair. We see the front stagnant; at some parts almost where it stood two and a half years ago; yet we go on, knowing that the hour of triumph draws near, that the ofgy of death is soon to give place to héstruggle for life iii its fullest sense. We have suffered much in the furnace of war. We shall come out of it purified, with the dross oi old illusions burnt away. What then is our message on this, the threshold of the fourth (and we hope and believe, the final) year of ArmageddonCourage, steadfastness and faith. The first we have never lacked; heroism, chivalry 'mid filth, gfeat-heartedness in the hitherto despised, have beeni (outstanding features in the war's j reoord. Only let us be steadfast. Never Was a nation, as a whole, more resolute than ours is to-day. But there are undercurrents, bom in dark places and perverted minds. Let us battle against these, as We have bitttledagaillst more open foes, firm in the knowledge that our cause is just, and deep in the ittitb that victory is to be ours. And let us be worthy of that vietory when it comes. On the "Peace" proposals of the South Wales Miners' Federa- tion, carried by 212 votes against 43 at the Delegate Conference at Cardiff, there should be no mis-1 understanding among the general public. It may, or may not, have been Wise to PajJS a resolution of any kind on the subject just at pre- sent, when the mighty effort of our army and the armies of our I Allies is giving proof of the utter madness of calling fot anything in the shape of a premature peace. And it is certain that at the Miners' Conference there was a strongly-expressed objection to the proposal for any kind of peace pro- paganda. Still, the form in which the Souiria Wales Miners' Executive Council put forward the tentitive "feeler" was' made clear, and the explanatibn followed closely the lines mentioned in our columns over a week ago. First of all the views of the rank and file of the miners in the South Wales coalfield are to be ascertained by ballot, and the direction to be sought from them is: whether they are in favour, or not in favour, of endeavouring to ascertain the opinions of the miners in this country as to focus- sing the labour idea of a pea/je settlement. If they agree, and if the miners of the country agree, to that preliminary, then the views of other sections of the labour movement in this country must he sought on the same question. ) f the majority assent, the labour movements in the Allied countries are to be invited to state whether they are prepared to subscribe to the British working class policy ot trying to get the German labour section to throw over the German Junkers and go in for a democratic peace. ( » It certainly is going to be a slow process, and it is possible the war may be over before the final move in the somewhat ponderous pre- liminary negotiations are over, un- less the peace-at-any-price cranks and players of Germany's game are permitted to capture the scheme and exploit it for the benefit of the Kaiser. The strong speeches de- livered at the conference by Mr. T. Richards, M. P., Mr. Hubert- Jen- kins, and Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, however, indicate that some of the keenest intellects in the South. Wales labour movement are fully alive to the situation, .and one t-f the best signs of the times is the fact that other men who were a couple of years ago regarded as ex- tremists seem to have finished sow- ing their political "wild oats," and are settling down to hard matters of fact in a manner which bodes well for the sanity and solidarity of the ranks of experienced and popu- lar leaders. It may, therefore, be accepted as certain that the South Wales miners' "peace feeler" is not by any means a dem&nd for a German peace or a. premature peace, and this view will doubtless be emphasised by the views of the men at the pits whose sons and brothers have fought and bled aad died for their country in the pro- sent great war. Representation are to be made on behalf of the Llanelly Corpora- tion with the view of inducing the Local Government Board to satLc- "tion the erection of 300 working class houses forthwith. The Presi- dent of the Board is making inves- tigations as to the probable number of houses that will be required after thp war, but at Llanelly, where the exodus of thousands of men has been compensated for by the influx of an even larger number, the hous- ing question has become so acute that it will broa no further delay. For some time past there has been serious overcrowding, and m numerous instances the Corporation have found themselves in a quan- dary, because after closing orders had been served oil owners of in- sanitary dwellings, they realised that repairs could not be effected without the occupants being ejected, and also that it was hope- less for the tenants to search for other habitations. A precedent has been created at Burry Port, where I the Government have authorised a free grant to a public utility com- pany, so that the cost of erecting the houses to the Company will not exceed, prfe-waf prices. Through the Government having made this concession, it will be possible to lot the houses to be erected at Hurry Port at far lower telitals than other- wise.
