LOCAL POLICE COURTS. SWANSEA I Wednesday.—Before A. H. Thomas (chairman), J. H. itosser. Major Morris, Dr. Joseph Davias and David Thomas. MARRIED WOMAN'S DISGRACE. Mary Nicholls (40), married, was charged with being drunk and incapable on January 23rd, and was fined 76. (id. COUNTY CASES. A CARELESS PIT DRIVER. Albert Lewis, Pontardulais, haulier (18), was charged with violating the Coal Mines Act. The complainant, David Hopkins, was represented by Mr. Hy. Thompson, who said defendant, while working at the Graigola Merthyr Colliery, drove a horse in a careless manner on January 3rd. W. J. Davies, a fireman. said that de- fendant acted in direct contravention of his instructions. In lowering some trams down an incline he hitched his pony to the full trams, and the trams became too heavy for the pony. The pony and trams were hurled down the incline, and dashed into some stationary trams at the bottom. The pony, which was valued at Y,35, had to be destroyed. Mr. Thompson said he did not want to uaduly press the charge, though the bringing of the case might prove a deter- rent to other hauliers. The Bench fined defendant 20s. WANDERER'S FILTHY CONDITION. I James Gardiner, a labourer, of no fixed abode, 10 years of age, who had the ap- pearance of a negro, was charged with sleeping out in Gowerton on January 23. Inspector Davies said the prisoner was a perfect nuisance to the public of Gower- ton. The Chairman: I thought he was a blackman! Inspector Davies: No sir; he looks one, but there is, anotfier surface under that. (Laughter) Prisoner w841 committed for two months. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Wm. H. SWANSEA B.W.T.A. I 0 Interesting Address by Mrs. Randolph Clarkson. In connection with the British Women's Temperance Association, the annual te&. and public meeting was held at the Cen- tral Hall on Tuesday. The chair was to have been taken by Mr. Richard Martin, J.P., but who was unable to be present. He, however, sent a donation of a guinea towards the funds. Mrs. Crwys Williams, presided, and was supported by Miss Wheatley and other ladies. To a good attendance, Mrs. Randolph Clarkson, of Birmingham, gave a forceful address. She spoke of her sojourn in America, and the wonderful strides that country had made in the direction, of pro- hibition. The B.W.T.A. intended in future to be the champion of the children. If they could only convert the young people, future success was assurred. Miss Mac- millan in her report had stated there were approximately 2,000,000 mentally and phy-1 sically defective children in Great Brit- ain. In many cases their ill-health and deformities were the outcome of drink. The speaker appealed to the women to i take the matter earnestly. This war had shown that the women must play their part as well as the men. In her opinion, the war was as much to be won at home as abroad. Continuing, Mrs. Clarkson said there were 24 prohibition States in America, which, she hoped, would be en- tirely teetotal by 1920. There they had made the question one of practical politics, supported by the big business men, who did so from an economic standpoint. In some States the children sing, talk, and recite, even while quite young, the word "Prohibition." People ask, "What would! the brewers and the publicans do?" There is plenty of work for them. The speaker enlivened her address with several witty anecdotes, and was frequently applauded.. An enjoyable musical programme was rendered by the Fabian's Bay Choir (con- ducted by Mr. Tom Morris), and the fol- i j lowing artistes: Miss Marion Parker, Mrs. Eddie Rees, and Messrs. W. J. Williams, Dd. Price, Glyn Williams, and E. T. Cob-1 nell (who has fought on five fronts). The accompanist was Mr. W. J. Waters.

CAPT. H. C.H.EDEN, M.C II Wedding Gifts From Vivian's Staffs. An interesting ceremony took place at the Hafod offices of Messrs. Vivian and Sons, Ltd., when the staffs at the Hafod and Margam Works presented Captain H. C. H. Eden, R.F.A. (the son of the managing director, Mr. C. H. Eden) with a silver tray on the occasion of his mar- riage, and to his bride a silver salver. Capt. Eden was married on Nov. 22nd, but owing to a very short leave, no oppor- tunity presented itself for the presentation to be made at that time. About 50 of the staff attended, and there were also pre- sent besides Capt. and Mrs. Eden, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Eden, Miss Dulcie Eden, and Capt. Hugh Vivian. Mr. B. H. Morgan took the chair, and Mr. Blight, of the colliery department, and Mr. Burgess, of the Margam Works, spoke and heartily congratulated Capt. Eden on tho Military Cross which had re- cently been conferred upon him. Mr. J. R. Williams, the secretary of the company, made the presentation. Capt. Eden, responding, expressed his deepest thanks. He humorously men- tioned that the job of the Hafod and Mar- gam Works was to make the goods," and his job was to deliver them to the consignees," which he endeavoured to do with the utmost expedition and accuracy. Mr. C. H. Eden made a few remarks and feelingly acknowledged the references ivhich had been made with regard to the happy relations existing be tween himself and 'the staff, and his keen appreciation of their kindness towards his son. A vote of thanks to the ohairman brought a very happy gathering to a close.
