OCDE THF5ZE DERBY WINERS I Pitiable Plight of a Famous I Jockey. A pa th otic figure in Newport Workhouse i Jolin V'ell-, who thrice rode the winner <yii tixe Derby. The famous jockey wis found penniless on the roadside at Pontllanfraith, Monmouthshire, in a state of collapse, hav- ing trussed from Swansea in scarch of em- ployment. He was born at Plymouth, and Is eighty-three yours of age. He rode Sir Jo-sepii Hawley's Beadsman in the Derby of 1858, and in the following year he again secured the Bine Riband of th() Turf on Musjid, but his most surprising Derby victory was in 1368, when, mounted on BIa,) Gown, he beat Lady Elizabeth, owned by the Marquis of Hastings. These three victories were scored on horses owned by Sir J. Hawley, who a!&.) won the Derby with Tcdaington. Wells, in an interview on Thursday, re- called the fact that Lady Elizabeth, with Georg. Ford Ira m itt,, was favourite, and that the defeat of the favourite billed the J'.arqun of Hastings. He mentioned the Chaplin-Hastings feud, which arose out of tin elopement of the fiancee of Mr. Henry Chaplin, M.P., with the marquis. Tho victory of Mr. Chaplin's Hermit in 1967 ruined Lord Hastings. Wells formerly prepared horses for agricultural shows, but the war had robbed him of his occupation. Ho is anxious to get back to Ncr/market or Epsom, believing tha-t the stable lads would lccfc. after him. When he was found ho had I been without fehelter for five nights.

I I GERMANS CLAIM PRISONERS I The following telegraphic dispatch has been received from British General Head- quarters, dated Thursday, 10.40 p.m.:— Eighteen aeroplanes carried out a suc- cessful bombing raid yesterday on enemy huts at Terhand. Several huts were damaged, and a stequi lorry was hit. All our machines returned safely, Some skirmishes between patrols took place last night east of Kenimel.o Last night and to-day hostile artillery ¡ has been active against Bray, Suzanne, Ovillers, and Toncquevillers. [Thee 3 are points on the southern part of the British front.] Early this morning tho enemy sprang a I mine north-east of Givencfiy, but there was no damage, and wo suffered no casualties. Tho usual shelling during the day occurred at the Bais Gienier. Hostile artillery shelled Poperinghe and Elver- d inghe. To-day our artillery engaged enemy batteries west of St. Julien. I FRENCH REPULSE ATTACKS. Paris, Thursday, 11 p.m.—The following is officially communicated:— In Artois during tho day we continued to make progress by bombing the com- munication trenches west of La Folie. Two German attacks against our posi- tions west of Hill 140 wero completely repulsed. North of the NenvillThelus road the Germans exploded a miue, the crater of which wo occupied. South of the Somme a small party of enemy infantry, which attempted to debouch. wa-s driven back into its trenches by our curtain fire. In the district of Bcauvraignes our artillery destroyed a blockhouse and bom- barded the cantonments of tho enemy. In Champagne a destructive fire against the German works in tie direction of Mesnil Hill had good results. In the Wocvro we carried out, in the Forest of Montmare, against a salient of the enemy's lines a violent bombardment, which caused the explosion of ammuni- tion depots. To.day the Germans again threw two heavy shells in tho direction of Belfort. Our artillery immediately concentrated it" tiro on the emplacement of the enemy's battery, which had been located yesterday. At the same timo we bombarded the military establishments of Dernach, south-west of Mulliauso.
