FREE MEALS IN SCHOOL .1
FREE MEALS IN SCHOOL .1 SHOULD SATURDAY AND SUHDAY PRACTICE BE OlSCOMTiiiiiED 1 HEAD TEACHER'S COMPLAINT. A meeting of the Swansea Provision of Meals snb (Education) Committee was held on Wednesday, Alderman W. H. Miles presiding. It was reported that th9 total expendi- ture on breakfasts and dinners for the four weeks ended 30th January was £ 648 17s. Sd., against iC738 los. 2d. the I previous month, and £ 193 Is. Id. the cor- responding month last year. The first period mentioned covered 28 days, the second 35 days, aud the third 20 days. The committee made a careful ex- amination of the reports regarding the hcme circumstances of the children who wore receiving free meals. In one case it was reported that the toother said to a child, It's too hot to get dinner for you to-day Go to school and get it." Owing to the illness of the father the meals were allowed. Government's Aid. j Referring to the cost of meals, the j Chairman said thero had been a. gradual reduction from the first month of the war. So far as the children on the register were concerned, the Government wore practically committed to 50 per cent. of the cost, but with regard to the others they had been asked to provide them with meals by the Corporation. The coet was a matter which would probably be considered by the Mayor, the borough treasurer, and himself. A letter was read from the head teacher of St. Helen's Boys' School with reference to the absence of children from frf-e meals. The letter stated that in many instances there was no real necessity for the meals. On Saturdays and Sundays one half or one third of the children did not attend, and in consequenite the caretakers were out of pocket. There could be no genuine need, and drastic regulations should bo made to stop the imposition. Inquiry Promulgated. -?- Tile wiairman said there was no neces- sity for the headteacher to talk like that until ÍLo heard the other side of the I question. If there had been imposition, the headteacher must have been a party to it, because the applications for free mea ls were made through him. He (the Chairman) suggested that an inquiry be made into the matter. The committee concurred, and adopted the Chairman's, suggestion. The question of giving the attendance officers remuneration for extra work was brought up and referred for further con- sideration. It was decided to accede to an applica- tion from the caretakers for extra ro- muneration in connection with the pro- vision of meals, it being stated that the price of foodstuffs had gone up. I School Banks. lue question ot provid-mg meals for ;hilftre.) w ho were school bsink depositors .as eonfcidenxl. The Chairman said if it was a question )i children having a fw pence in the sank to get wool or boots when required, t was a practice that ought tAt be en- jouraged. The Cosmmi-fcfcee approved. iuto. H. lJ. Walkeziis referred to a case in -which it was alleged tfea* a child had been debarred from receiving free meals because she Gat in a chair which she ought not to have occupied. Tho Chairman said that in no ewe should they allow pnnishment to taka such a form. It was decided to further inquire into the matter.

A letter was received from the General Secretary of the Belgian Iiefugoe&' Com- ( mittee in London on the question of pro- j riding work for female reîngeé. IWORKHOUSE AND VISITINu" COMMITTEE…
I WORKHOUSE AND VISITINu" COMMITTEE j The Swansea Workhouse Visiting Com-I mittao met at the institution on Wednes- day, Mr, Dd. Grey presiding. Mention was made of the different in I the amount of gas consumed this year and last year. There has been a con- siderable decrease owing to the reduced lighting in the town. Mr. (hyeu raised a point anent the fact that the committee was about to engage a shoemaker under trades' union wages and rules, and recommended that who- ever be employed be payed standard wages. It was finally resolved that the work should be sent to an outsider. Reports from Craig House were per- fectly satisfactory. It was reported that Mrs. Harriet Morgan, aged 9o, died last week. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Beynon and Mr. Ben Thomas for their kindness in helping in last week's con- cert at the workhouse. j
