IMUSIC IN CAbt-I
MUSIC IN CAbt I SWANSEA MALE VOICE CHOIR ENTERTAIN I LOCAL PRISONERS. I A couple of lioars were spent in gaol by the Swansea and District Male Voice Choir on Sunday afternoon. But not for a moment must it be thought that they entered as a punishment for any misdeed. Quite. otherwise, as the object was to give a short time of pleasure to those un- fortunates who were the guests of his Majesty within the grim walls. Through the good offices of the Rev. J. H. Watkins- Jones, the prison chaplain, the choir had been invited to sing before the prisoners. The usual formalities having been under- gone on entrance through prison gates, the singers were conducted by warders to the Prison Chapel, where all the prisoners had been congregated. B?v. WcLtki- Jones briefly introduced the choir, after which the most remarkable audience they had ever sang before were treated to a programme of vocal selections of a most excellent character. The programme included Dr. Protheroe's Nidaros," Dr. Parry's "Pilgrims," and Mr. D. Pugh Evans' Delyn Aur." It is hardly necessary to II say that there was no applause, but the fact that the singers" efforts were greatly appreciated was evident from the faces of the audience. In addition to the choruses, Mr. George Parkes and Mr. Ben. Thomas rendered solos. Beiore leaving the prison the choir were, with the consent of the governor, Mr. Gibeon, conducted around the builds inge.

In order to allow the men onsantry-go at Southsea Castle to share in the Christmastide festivities on Saturday the officers, from the commander downwards, shouldered the sentries' rifles and re- lieved them during dumer time. ECYPfS BRICHT FUTURE
ECYPfS BRICHT FUTURE AN INTERVIEW WITH THE NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER. Sarruf Bey, who is connected with Al-Mokattam," the chief Arabic daily organ in Egypt, and who is now staying in London, sends the following to the Daily Telegraph" I have been privileged to interview the newly-appointed High Commissioner for Egypt, Sir A. Henry McMuhon. He very kindly gave me his views on Egypt- ian matters, which he allowed 1110 to communicate to the Egyptians through Al-Mokattam," the Cairo daily news- paper. In the course of conversation. amongst other things, he said the follow- ing: H I All my lifo I have lived amongst Orientals, and especially Moslems, whoa. I sympathise with and esteem I hav. been associated during my military auc. administrative career with the border in- habitants of India, Afghanistan, and Persia, who are mostly Moslems, and ant greatly interested in all questions of Islam. "Could you tell me, Sir Henry, whether any radical changes will take place in the intarnal administration of the country? It is premature for mo to say any- thing in ftiis connection now. But al- though a Protectorate will involve some minor changes, there is no intention of effecting any radical ones, and whatever these may be they will be for the good of the country—for the more efficient and rapid workicg of the ndministrativo machinery/ Irrigation and Public Works. "What about the capitulations? 'The capitulations must eventually and automatically cease with the Protec- torate. It would be unwise to make a rapid change before wo know exactly what to replace them with. A suitable substitute must be found, as there are cosmopolitan interests that will have to be considered. But, apart from political interests, I have devoted much of my time to administrative questions, and am especially interested in agricultural ir- rigation and public works, all of which are problems that present themselves in very interesting form in Egypt. All pro- blems connected with the development of the country will present peculiar interest to me. Although I believe I know Indian conditions and problems, having studied them all my life, my general experience convinces me that the details of ad- ministration that may be good in India need not necessarily be applicable to Egypt. What I wish to conveiy is that it is by no means my Intention to copy Indian administrative measures, as the conditions of different countries demand different ways. In any case, Egypt may rest assured that the policy Great Britdfrn has ever followed-that of work- ing for the welfare of the countries it administers—will be continued as in the past. And for my part I hope to do what I can in this respect, relying on what my predecessors have already ac. complished and on the help of my co- workers in Egypt. The choice by England of Sir Henry McMahon to the newly-created post of High Commissioner presages for Egypt a brilliant future. Under the rule of a wise Sultan and the direction of an able and experienced British Commissioner, the valley of the Nile promises to bo one of the fairest jewels in Britain's Imperial Crown."
