In their last two matches with the; [Swansea LieYell,ewport have failed to i put; together a three-figured total. o put the thing in a nutshell, they have [only aggregated 153 for the loss of 19 wickets—F. G. Phillips did not bat at the Rodney Parade last month owing' to ati injury to the hand—as against nearly i MU -by their opponents, These figures emphasise the all-round strength of Swansea, but more than anything else they indicate the strength of our bowling. Creber and Maxwell have seldom, if ever, worked together with greater succcss than they have done this season. A few weeks ago, 1 wrote about tve failure of Swansea to beat -Newport for nearly ten years. This season they have done it twice without leaving any ground for the assertion that they have been lucky. Swansea can now lay just claims to being the best of all the Welsh clubs, and they cari also console themselves with the knowledge that they have treated a bigger following for the game than there is at either Newport or Cardiff. Maxwell's Popularity. The popularity which Maxwell enjoys in Swansea is not at all surprising to those who know him best. He is as fine a type of sportsman as one could wish to meet; and his methods on the field are so Jessopian that the crowd positively rise to him. He had a bumper benefit on Saturday in spite of the threatening weather, and yet he was very un- fortunate in one sense, for he got caught out first ball. The game had been won by the time he went in, and so he threw restraint to the winds and tried to lift the first ball sent down to him to the track. The catch which sent him back was one of the running order, made right in front of the grand stand. With the exception of the beneficiare and H. W. Baxter—who got two—the batting of Swansea was very consistent. We aw Eo W..rones at his best, and we were treated to a good display by Stanlev Rees. whose only fault was that tendency of his to be too painstaking. Dr. Cameron was forceful. Creber was II positively fucDy! The Comic Element. Xow Creber never was orthodox, and seemingly he never will he. He has a couple of strokes which beggar descrip- tion. There is that leg shot of his; and that stroke which he makes after turning his back on the bowler. On Saturday he got. a boundary by hitting the ball to the boundary with the back of his bat just when the wicket-keeper was in the act of i.iifberi'ig it under the impression tha» the batsman was letting it go by. Thrre was no call for seriousness at this point; and Creber' comedy was a fitting climax to a win for which his bowling was very largely responsible- Extras Galore. The New-port wicket-keeper was pro- bably the iv.ost: dissatisfied member of a disappointed temi. There was onci* eitras in the Swansea total, arid it was not to be woiulered at that Newport had at length to change their stumper. The Usksiders arc going to have rmna (lilb- culvy in replacing Diver who, I under- stand, now feels unequal to the strain of wicket-keeping. The biggest eoti tributor to the Newport total was- F. Cordon Phillips, the fast bowler. But while this player succeeded in the one department he failed in the other, for he did not get a single wicket. The most successful bowlers were B. Phillips, the captain of the Newport Seconds, and Brown, the new professional. They claimed five victims apiece. TINPLATERS' DISCUSSION. I DEPARTURE FROM CUSTOM AGREED TO II BY WIEN. An important meeting of tiaplate mem- bcTo cf the Steel Smelters' Union was held at Swansea on Saturday. The chief item on the agendi was to cliscuse the action of the leaders in agreeing to the principle of putting extra help in mills, at the last Conciliation Board meeting, without first of all consulting the men. A very animated and interesting dinouseiou took place, gome of the delegates claiming that the leaders had taken a very serious and grave step to allow the employers to de- part from the old method of working, before giving the men who were to be affected by such change, an opportunity to discuss the nutter. Mr. Tom Griffiths, the organiser, gave a review of the whole position. He dealt with the history of the trade from 1891 up to the present time, and showed the de- velopment of the trade in other countries, and said that if the trade wa sto be rC- tained in this country, it was only going to be done by the workers and employers co-operating together. Mr. Griffiths complimented the delegates f-or the intelligent interest they were taking in their trade, and pointed out that their criticism and addresses were both helpful 2bnrl uesful. Mr. UrHUth., also dealt with the four clauses agreed upon in the la-st Board meeting, iukI gave the men his assurance that they had been fully protected in every clause, In addition, he pointed out. to the men, that the first three months wonld be experimental, and lie gave them an undertaking tklt no permanent change of any character should take place In the trade until the whole of the delegates had been consulted on the matter. The delegates, after having the explana- tion of Mc. Griffiths. decided to endorse the action of the officials, and put their trust and confidence in them, the guai-.TLit- tee having been given that no permanent changes should take place in any works in the trade before the men lu-d been con- sulted on the matter.

The annual meeting of the South Wales and Monmouth hire Football Association was held in the Lecture Hall of the Car- diff Y.M.C.A. on Saturday evening, Mr. J. R. Stephens presiding. Mr. Harry Hart. the secretary, presented the annual report, and Mr. George Mercer submitted the financial statement, details of which have been published. Both reports were accepted as satisfactory, and the officials thanked for their services. "HO DECISION" BOXING BOUT AT SWANSEA An interesting ten-round no decision encounter was fought at Mr. Alf Harry's boxing booth, Swansea, on Saturday evening;, before a large crowd, between Guppy Thomas (wanspa) and Pllil- Hopkins (Pontypridrl). The men met at catch-weights, Thomas giving away con- siderable weight, probably a stone. The bout was a capital one. and went the whole distance. Thomas was aggressive an through, and wlien occasion demanded he also proved extreniely clever on the defensive. The Tylorstown Terror." Adding to his many victories, Jimmy Wide (Tylorstown), the 9st. champion of the world, easily beat Charley Lordon (London), a smart Sat. 2lb. boxer, at the Marquee, Tonypandy, on Saturday. For the first two rounds Wilde showed no great: superiority, and Lordon, aided by his stone advantage in weight, did fairly well. Then. however. Wilde, beginning to force the boxing, continually worked his opponent to the ropes, and hit with terrific power.
