The schools, Intermediate and elementary, which were closed sometime ago owing to the influenza epidemic, will not re-open until after Christmas. Thomas, at the inquest held on Monday, touching the death of Mr* Mary Roberts (46), 3, St. Michael Street. The evidence of the daughter was to the effect that on the 20th ult. she and her mother were in bed suffering from influenza Sometime before day?ght on the following morning she missed her mother and found her lying dead on the stairs. Last Tuesday evening the band met Cpl. King, son of Mr King, stationmaster, and played him hornt. The High Sheriff and the Mayor were present to give him a welcome. There was a goodly congregation. Mr D. J. Richards officiated and preach- ed. Thanks were expressed to Mr Richards for his good services, and also to Mr Evan Evans, who had effectively made expression of the service in his lSolo, "Babylon." Tender expressions of sympathy were extended to those who had recently been bereaved, and hope was renewed now that we were on the batter side of the war and the recent epidemic. The superintendent, Mr Robinson, has again -arranged for the usual X'ma,s tree, but thi& has to be deferred for a while. The first prisoner of war to arrive home at Brecon is t Pte. Wilfrid Ashton, of the Lincolns, son of Mr and Mrs David Ashton, Conway Street. Young Ashton went out to France at Easter last, and was taken prisoner on May 27th. He was sent to Frankfort, and for a time worked in the German copper mines. He says that had it not been for the parcels of food from home he and others would have fared very badly. When the armis- tice was declared they were liberated, and on crossing tha frontier he found himself with the Americans. His brother, Herbert, who was twice wounded, the last time badly in the foot, «as the first Brecon bov to win dis- tinction. being awarded the Military Medal earlv in the war.

F. Morgan (Dolgoy) have been home on leave. The recent special meeting of the Urban Council dis- cussed the proposed extension of the gas service to the Cambrian Factory, and agreed to do all in their power for the parties concerned. Mr S. HAY. I A goodly number attended the Free Church weekly Ptoyer meeting, which was held at the Congregational Church on Tuesday evening. A social for the members of the Free Chnrch Girls' Guild was held on Monday evening at the Wesleyan Schoolroom, when a very pleasant evening was spent.
