PENKELLY. A most enjoyable evening -was spent at the Penuel Chapel, Penkelly, on the 18th inst., upon the occasion of the annual concert, under the auspices of the Vale of Usk Free Church Council. Mr Edgar Morgan, The Court, presided, and his genial presence, coupled with his pithy remarks, added considerably to the enjoyment of the evening. Prior to singing the National Anthem, the chairman proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the artistes. This was seconded by the Rev. Roderick Mor- gan, who remarked that it was a plea-sure to call upon them for their assistance, which was given most readily on all occasions. Mr Morgan moved a vote of thanks to the chairman. Mrs Roderick Mor- gan and Miss Maddy were the accompanists. An ex- cellent programme of isolos, recitations, quartettes and glees were supplied by the following :-Solos, Miss Wil- liams. Master Herbert Rees, Master Harold Williams, Mr Brinley Morris, Mr Hamer and Mr W. Morris; re- citations by Miss Maggie Lloyd, Miss Jessie Davies, Miss Lottie Evans, Mr W. Evans and Master Ivor Williams; quartette by Mr E. S. Edwards, and party; glees, Bethania choir, under the leadership of Mr John Morris.

I HAY. I A successful jumble sale was held on Saturday after- noon in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, when £10 wat realised ,towarda the funds of the Church. Capt. Jeffrey Grant, Machine Gun Corps, son of Mr and Mrs Grant, Castle Street, is home on leave from France, where he hae been for nearly two years. Cpl. Aubrey Ferris, R.F.A., sou of Mr and Mrs Ferris, High Town, has been recommended for a commission, and arrived home from France last week. Cpl. Ferris has 14 days' leave, and will tWn go to a training ,seliool in Brighton. A meeting of the War Savings Committee was, held at the offices of Messrs. Chee&e and Armstrong, Broad Street, on Thursday evening, when application forms were signed for the affiliation of 5 War Savings Associa- tions in the district. In the "Insurance Mail" this week, there is an account of ehe dinner given to the Brecon district staff of the Prudential Assurance Company, some time ago, in which it states that Mr W. S. Williams, West View, Hay, took the first prize (gold watch) for combined increase in both branches, and also two other prizes for similar results. At Clyro petty sessions, held on Monday, before Major W. de Winton, Messrs. W. M. Baylia, John Davies, Charles Powell and H. Bishop, Francis H. Darling (Brook House), Hay, was charged with riding a bicycle without lights on the 25th January. De- fendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 2/6. Thomas Richards, Great House. Newchureh, was fined 5/ for allowing five pigs to .stray on the highway. Defendant, who did not appear, wrote admitting the offence. On Tuesday, 19th inst., through the kindness of Mr David Stephens (Tylau) the scholars of the Congrega- tional Sunday school were entertained to tea in the schoolroom, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. During the evening Mr David Stephens, who has been re-elected superintendent of the Sunday school, distribu- ted the prize" for regular attendance during the past year, and Mrs Gwatkin handed the books to the schol- ars, who had collected towards the Home Missions.

I GLASBURY-ON-WYE. I Nurse J. Jones (Swansea Hospital) has been home for a few days' rest. Local soldiers, home on leave, recently were Lieut. V. Amos, 0 and B.L.I., Air Mechanic R. Jones, R.F.C., and Lance-Corpl. F. Robertson, K.S.L.I., who has been three years in France. A serious accident befel Mrs Williams driving out the bread-van for Mrs Pugh at Tregoyd on Monday evening. It appears that the bread cart, which she was in the act of mounting, coming in contact with rather a high bank on the side of the road, partially fell towards her, and, the horse moving at the time, she was badly bruised by the wheel of the vehicle. She was pinned to the spot, but, help having arrived, Mr Devereux sent his motor-car to convey her to meet the doctor. It was found that rather severe hemorrhage Had resulted, but no bones were fractured. We are glad to add that she is recovering as well as can be expected. After a month's stay the cookery van, on the 14th inst., was the scene of a very happy gathering. Miss Randall had done her work with such keen interest tha.t during the whole month not a single half-day's attend- ance was lost by any one of the girl pupils, although the weather some days was rough. On the occasion of the breaking up -a tea was provided by Mrs Bayliss, Mrs Bishop and Mrs Mason. Mr A. F. Gwynne catered for the tea. A few appropriate words were spoken by Mrs Bayliss to the girls, who were arranged in two re-lays of 8 in the van. Mrs Synge was thanked for kindly allowing the van to be located on suitable pre- mises at the Woodlands. Miss Randall's work was highly appreciated. We regret to record the death of Mr F. George W. Hodges, which took place, on the 18th inst., at Maas- llwch Lodge, at the early age of 29. Mr Hodges, who came to :this district seven years ago as clerk to Mr A. Mason, Maesllwch estate agent, had been in in- different1 health for some time, but had been able to attend to his duties within a week of his death. He was a young man of sterling moral worth, and was much es- teemed by all his acquaintances. He was- the son of Mr and Mrs Hodges, of Birmingham. He was a keen' sportsman, and held the offices of secretary of the Cricket Club and official scorer for the Rifle Club. He .leaves a widow to mourn hor loss. On Thursday the body was tåen to the railway station to he con- veyed by the 11.13 train to Birmingham, where the burial took place. Mr H. K. Lupton, Mr MacCormack, Pte. Dicker and Mr Gunter were the bearers. Mr Mason represented Major de Winton. There were many floral tributes, but the only one placed on the coffin was that from Major de Winton, the others being sent on. Mr J. W. Morgan provided the coffin, and Mr Gwynne was the undertaker. The burial of the late Mr John Evans, of Brook Road, took place on Thursday afternoon at Llowes. Mr Evans, who was in his 81st year, was born near Builth, and had come to reside here 63 years ago. He was in the. employ of the Maesllwch Estate for 44 years. In his lat- ter years he greatly suffered from rheumatism, but, otherwise, was hale and hearty. He was a man that was much liked, and was of a cheerful and friendly disposition. His wife had pre-deceased him some 24 years, and the family, with one exception, are gone to reside in other localities. One daughter, single, lives in America. She was unable to cross the Atlantic on account of war conditions to see her father when he had been taken worse. 'l1Iie bearers were Messrs. M. Evans, R. Jones, J. Marsden and G. Ferris. The chief mourners were Mr John Evans, Bedford (son), Mrs Dean, Bedford (daughter), Mrs Craddock, Bedford (daughter), Mrs Plumridge, High Wycombe (daughter), Mrs and Mr H. Thomas, Glasbury (daughter and son- in-law), There were many beautiful floral wreaths. Messrs. J. W. Morgan and A. F. Gwynne were the undertakers. The burial service at Llowes Church was conducted by Rev. Thomas, and at the grave by the Rev. H. Griffith.

LLANAFAN. We regret to announce the death of Mr Evan Powell (Bwlch-garth), who passed away on Saturday. The funeral was at Llanfihangel Church to-day (Wednesday). Deceased was 74 years of age.

LLANBADARN-Y-GARREG. The competitive meeting, to be held at the Congre- gational Chapel, on Friday next, is !ikety to prove a great success. The entries are numerous, and there> is every probability of keen competition on some of the items.

HIRWAIN. I Pte. Sedgemore is home at present, having been gassed and wounded. We are glad he is recovering. Mr George Mason, Station Road, has been elected secretary pro. tem. of the Allotment Society. The society is procuring more fields for cultivation. We regret to record a fatal accident, which occurred on the 18th inst., to Mr John Jones, Penderyn, who whilst working in the sand-worlts was knocked down by a tram. He died from the injuries sustained in a few days. He was a well respected man, and a deacon of the C.M. Church. Mrs Dd. Williams, Brecon Road, Hirwain, and Miss Morgan, John's Road, died Sunday, March 17th, and both were buried in Hirwain Cemetery, Thursday, March 21st. Mrs Williams was 52 years of age, and Miss Morgan 22 years. Both were well known and highly respected and the funerals were largely attended.

"Llangwidge" at Builth. I MAGISTRATES' COMMENTS. I At Builth police court, on Monday, before Mr C. W. Woosnam (in chair) and Dr Black Jones, Mrs S. Rosser and Mrs Fanny Price (Bank Square) were both summoned for using insulting language. I P.s. Davies stated at 3 p.m. on the 25th of Feb., he was on duty in High Street, when in consequence of information received, he visited Bank Square and saw the two defendants quarrelling and calling each other bad names. Had he not been there a breach of the peace would have taken place. He cautioned them but they remained there for some time, but afterwards went inside. Both defendauts denied using bad language. The chairman of the Bench, in imposing a fine of 5s. inclusive in both cases, said that no doubt the using of bad language went on to a greater extent in Bank Square than elsewhere, and it did a great deal of harm to the children who heard it. —

Talgarth Lady. DEATH OF MRS F. T. MORGAN. Quite a gloom was ca&t over the neighbourhood, on the 14th inst., by the. death of Mrs F. T. Morgan, Bell Street, Talgarth. On the Wednesday an operat-ion was performed. From the outset the cas-e was considered serious, but notwithstanding this there was a hope that the patient would rally. On Thursday aft-ernoon the end came, and a beloved neighbour passed peace- fully away. Universal sympathy is felt for the hus- band, who has been left with the babe just one week old. Only recently Mr and Mrs Morgan had removed to large and eommodious premises recently built. The deceased lady was a daughter of Mr More, agent for the Llandinam estate, and was 33 years of age. She had resided in Talgarth since her marriage about six years ago. The interment took place on the following Saturday afternoon in the Talgarth Churchyard, and wa,s very largely attended—in fact there were hundreds present, all eecftions of the community being represented. The vicar (Rev. D. Williams) conducted the service. The hymns sung by the choir were "On the Resurrection Morn," "Jesu, Lover of my soul," and "Peace, perfect peace." The polished oak coffin was supplied by Mr Samuel Davies, Cardiff House. The bearers were Messrs. J. 0. Powell, J. Parry, Vincent Davies and Jenkvn Evans. The chief mourners were Mr F. T. Morgan (husband), Mr Robt. More, Llandinam (father), Mias R. More (sister), Mr Fred Morgan, Bungalow (father-in-law), Mr Humphreys, Llandrindod (brother-in-law), Mrs Geo. MoTe (sister-in-law). Miss G. E. Morgan and Miss K. W. Morgan (sisters-in-law), and Mr A. Curtis, Bronllys. On Sunday a large number of friends visited the grave. At the close of the burial service, the Rev. Tudor Jones, B.A., offered a most impressive prayer at the graveside. Among the letters of condolence from all parts of the country was the following:—"Penybryn, Llandinam, Mont., 15th March, 1918. My dear Mr Morgan. In common with everybody here, my wife and I were deeply shocked to hear of the awful blow that has fallen so Isuddenly upon you in the passing of your dear wife. And I cannot let post go without expressing to you and to Miss More our deep and sincere sympathy in this dark hour of your grief and loneliness. She was one cf those rare characters—a womanly woman. We, her friends, all respected her modesty, her (juiet strength and her gentleness. We admired the splendid way she -carried on during your service in the Army, and her devotedness was beyond all praise. It is all so strange to us that she should have been called to a higher service in the prime of her life; and only you know what the loss of her will mean. May God rest her soul in peace, and sustain you to bear up under the burden of your great sorrow. May he be your solace and sanctuary these dark days. I have just come from Maethfe. Poor Mr More is overwhelmed with grief. Please convey to Miss More our whole-hearted sym- pathy and tenderest regards. Believe me to remain, my dear Mr Morgan, most sincerely yours, R. Jones." Beautiful floral tributes were sent as follow:— "If love could'st have saved thee, thou would'st not have died," to my beloved wife from her sorrowing husband. "In deepest sorrow," from Daddy and Bett. "In loving memory," from father, mother, and Kate; "With loving remembrance," from Edgar, May ami children. "Loving remembrance," from Cias. "With deep sympathy," from Ivor and Bertha. "In loving remembrance," from Maggie and little Maisie. "In grateful memory of a true and kind-hearted friend," from Mr and Mrs Tudor Jones. "In affectionate remembrance," from Mr and Mrs Cooper, Abergavenny. "In loving memory," from Aunt Hannah, Jeanie and Hester, Dover. "In deepest sympathy," from St. Gwendoline's Church and Guild. "In loving sympathy," from Mr and Mrs J. O. Powell. "In kind remembrance,' 'from Mrs Ed. Davies, Plas- dinam. "Sincere sympathy," from Mr and Mrs Levett. The coffin was of unpolished oak- with massive silver fittings, the plate bearing the engraving, "Janet Jamieson Morgan, born "September 27th. 1884, died March 14th, 1918, aged 33 years." -The undertaker was Mr Samuel Davies.

CWMTAF. Cardiff Waterworks Committee recently received a letter from Mr Thomas W. Lewis. Pontypridd, asking that fishing he again allowed at the Cwm-Tatf res-ervoir and in the river. The committee decided that fishing he permitted in all the Corporation reservoirs to per- sons of British nationality on the usual terms. At Cardiff Waterworks Committee, recently, Alder- man C. H. Bird presiding, the waterworks engineer (Mr C. H. Mr John Newman (president) occupied the chair at a meeting of the town and district Co-operative Society on Tuesday evening, when Mr Sykes (Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd.) explained what benefits. mem- bers could derive by the society joining Collective Life Assurance. The meeting unanimously decided to be- come associated. There -was a large attendance at Alpha Presbyterian Church anniversary services on Sunday. Rev. D. M. Rowlands, Aberystwyth, occupied the pulpit morning and evening, and preached telling discourses. A Psalm was chanted by the choir and Sunday school-children in very pleasing fashion in the afternoon. Psalms were also recited by the different Sunday school classes, Miss Milla Ves-t's class (boys and girls) reciting "Talents." An interesting addres-s-waz also given to the children by Rev. D. M. Rowlands. There was but a fair supply of fat stock at the mar- ket 011 Monday. Prices were:—Bulls, bullocks and heifers (1st and 2nd grade), 70/- to 75/- per cwt.; cows (1st and 2nd grade), 63/- to 70/ sheep, graded at live weight from 7]d to 8ld per lb.; cows with calves (very scarce), 1st class, £35 to 237, and 2nd class ditto, £28 to £ 32. There were on offer a few store cattle at last week's prices. No pigs were brought in. Supplies of produce were average. Eggs were cheaper, and sold freely at 4 and 5 for a 1/ Other produce prices re- mained unaltered. A pretty and interesting wedding wa,s solemnised at Horeb Congregational Church on Wednesday morning, when the contracting parties were Miss Elsie Davies (daughter of Mr W. Davies, 3, Victoria Terrace) and Mr A. W. Watkins, Cardiff (son of Mr W. Watkins, Stoke Porges, and late of Llanishen). Rev. Lewis Bey- non (pastor) officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a pretty costume and hat to match. Pte. Harry Watkins acted in the capacity of best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the bride's home, from whence the nappy couple left for Tenby, where the honeymoon is being spent. Many useful presents were received. The death is announced of Mr Thomas John Hawkins (familiarly known to the public as "Old Soldier"), who passed away at Jenkin's Court, on Wednesday, after a brief illness. The funeral took place at St. Mary's Church on Saturday, when Rev. S. H. Wenham officiated. Bearers were Messrs. E. Stan- ton, J. Davies, W. Davies, T. Samuel and W. Willis. On the breastplate of the coffin was inscribedj "John Hawkins, aged 74 years." Messrs. John Matthew Jones and Son .carried out the duties of undertaker. De- ceased was a familiar figure in Builth, and, until the last four years, he attended most of the fairs as a drover. He was in born in Liverpool, and, from there, joined the colours and saw much foreign service with the Life Guards in India. Eventually, he came to Builth, where he had lived for the last 20 years. He was fond of reminiscencing upon his Arnjy life, and, in conse- quence, earned for himself the name of "Old Soldier." Not the least remarkable thing about him was his great height, 6ft. 3ins.

NEWBRIDGE-ON-WYE. Pte. W. Evans (third son of Mr and Mrs EVanS) has been home on leave from Scarborough. Lieut. Walter Weale (son of Mr and Mrs T. Weale, Jlid-Wales Inn Cottages) has been home on leave. Mrs Venables-Llewelyn is organising a. movement here to provide the children, attending the elementary school, from long distances, with a hot dinner daily. Lance-corpl. Jessie Lewis, now on active service in Palestine, writes to the effect- that he is fit and well, and is looking forward to the speedy termination of hostilities. Lieut. D. Meredith (Somerset House), Royal Engin- eers, 2nd A.M. George Banks (Oak House), R.F.C., and Pte. Fred Hammonds (Glanwye), King's Shropshire Light Infantry, have returned to military duties in France, after spending brief furloughs at home.

LLANWRTHWL. News has been received by Mrs Rice, Post Offi, that her son, Pte. J. H. Jtice, has been dangerousli- wounded whilst serving with the Welsh Regiment "somewhere in France." A later report says "condition satisfactory."

SENNYBRIDGE. From reports to hand from some of the canvassers in the 10 parishes, there are now about 126 members in the local branch of the F.U. The letting of the rights of selling at the local stock market was deferred at the annual meeting, but we are now given to understand it will be settled early next month. The Devynock District Friendly Society, formed for the purpose of carrying out the work of the National Insurance in the district, is flourishing, and its membership is annually increasing. On Saturday evening last the members of Rhydy- briw Church and many other friends met at the Mar- ket Hall, when Mr Walter Evans, Bailybedw, presided, to present Pte. Melville Evans, M.T.C., the soldier t-on of Mr and Mrs Alfred Evans, sculptor, &c., Usk Stores, Seirhvbridge, with a wristlet watch. Mr Evans gave a most appropriate opening address, and at the close of which he called Pte. Evans forward and presented him with the watch. Pte. Evans responded in a neat and touching little speech, thanking his fellow-members at Rhydybriw Church for their kind thoughts of him and the other boys who are serving their King and coun- try from the church. Mrs Morgan, of Pentrefelin Schools, had organised a fitting little entertainment for the occasion, when the following took part, viz., Mr B. Morris, Misses G. Morgan (Emporium), Agnes Page, Nurse Williams, Bonnie Davies and Dilys Mor- gan. Mrs Morgan and Miss G. Morgan, Emporium, and Miss Gertie Jenkins,. aet-ed as accompanists. Short. pithy and appropriate addresses were delivered by Mr G. II. Davies (stationmaster), Dr. W. R. Joneit (Bron- wy.sg), Sgt.-Major West (Reading Room) and Mr Alfred Evans. A very pleasant evening was terminated with the singing ef the Welsh and English National An- thems.

I BUILTH ROAD. I I Quarter-Master Sergeant George Williams (Rhyd- felen) and Corporal Eddie Morris (Wys View Terrace) I were home on a few days' leave last week.

LLANWRTYD WELLS. Palm Sunday was observed in our town last Sunday, but the display of flowers was not so general as in pre- war days. Second-Lieut. T. Davies, M.G.C. (Gellyfelen farm), and Pte. Fred Morgan (Dolgoy) were reoently home on leave Pte. Clement Price, R.F.C. (son of Councillor E. Price, Gwalia House) is. home on 14 days' leave from France, looking fit and well. Pte E. O. Jones paid a visit home during last week. Sgt. Stanley Davies, Military Medalist, M.G.C., is home on 14 days' leave from France. Sgt. Davies has been out on the Western front for over two years, and has been in the thick of it and twice wounded. Over 80 visitors had hooked at the Abernant Hotel at the close of last week, and a large number at the Askomel Hotel. Dolecoed Hotel and boarding-houses also are from all indications likely to have a busy time jover the Easter holidays. THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM. Fabrics are continually (advancing. LLANGYNIDR. Pte. W. Watkins has just been home on short leave. Pte. Morton Jenkins, who was wounded at Bourlon Wood, has been home on leave from hospital.

ABERCRAYE. Lieut. Hamilton Morgan, R.F.A., has just been home on 14 days' leave from Italy. Miss M. Mathias (Dyffryn) has received intimation that her brother, Pte. Isaac Mathias, has been wound- ed and is now at a base hospital.

CRICKADARN. A service, in memory of Mr Thomas, Blaeneunrig, who was buried at the Chapel graveyard on Thursday in last week, was held at the chapel on Sunday afternoon. A good number came together to show their respect for the departed and- out of sympathy for his relatives. Some of the relatives present were Mrs Thomas (widow), Miss Thomas (sister), Mr and Mrs Davies, Mr and Mrs Evans, Mr W. Prosper, Mr and Sirs Jones, Mrs Prosser, &e. Other sisters and relatives from Llan- wrthwl and other places' were present at the funeral The deceased had .suffered much in a patient and quiet way during the past year, and his end came peacefully at the age of 46.
