TAUNTED BEREAVEDI FATHER.
TAUNTED BEREAVED FATHER. MELYN FIREMAN'S DESPIC- ABLE CONDUCT. ASSAULT ON HEADMASTER. | At Xcath on Friday, Thomas Edward Thomas, colliery tireman, of Melincrythan, was charged with assaulting and beating David Jones Davies, the headmaster of the Melincrythan Schools, and also with using indecent language. Mr. Shipton, who prosecuted, said that plaintiff had been headmaster of the Melin i Schools for very many years, and had about 300 children under his care. On Monday last plaintiff was called out to the passage of the schools, where he saw defendant with his son. Defendant was under the influence of drink, and said that when his son came hte to school he did not want him caned. Plaintiff said he would use his discretion, and he would be as reasonable as possible. Defendant, however, commenced shouting and demanded the headmaster to promise that he would not cane his boy. He used filthv language, and when asked to leave refused to do ,ol and then struck plaintiff in the chest. Mr. Divies called to some of assistants, when defendant said, "You won't put me out," and referred to plain- tiffs son, whom he said he knew and who had been Killed at the front. .fr. Davi-es a^ked iiim to leave his sou a name alone, as he had been killed, and de- fendant replied. "And a good job, too." As Mr. Davies turned to call assist- .?ncc defendant caught hold of him and struck hiiii ii. He was then ejected. I Plaintiff feelingly bore out his solicitor's statement, and said that the defendant was1 very violent and used very filthy language. Bertie Pearce, Fred Jackson (two school-^ boys), and J. Dades and Stanley Richards, assista.nt tea"hcN', corroborated plaintiff's statement. Defendant said he wa? a widower with eleven chddr?n, and said he only wanted to get the boy let nff from a caning if he was late. He denied the assault and the bad language. j A fine of R-2 was imposed with costs and ad vocate s fee, or 25 days. I

A tumultuous scene was enacted on the staircase leading to the Neath County Police Court on Friday morning. and for several moments pandemonium reigned outside the door.
