UNDERGROUND BAKE- HOUSES. Peculiar Legal Position at Llanelly. Llanelly Council are in a. somewhat pecu.¡ liar position OVl' the granting of a certifi- cate for a bakehouse which they now find to be illegal. It appears that last summer, Councillor John Thomas fitted up a fine bakehouse in the basement of his premises in Stepney- street, and on completion was granted a certificate by the sanitary inspector. A little later the medical oificer reported that underground bakehouses were illegal under an Act of Parliament in 1900. After several meetings of the Council Com- mittee the following resolution was passed on January 19th Resolved that the occu- pier of the bakehouse in question be re- quired within one month from this date to abandon the use of the said underground ba k ehouse as such, and failing compliance within the time.?pecined. that legal pro- ceedings be instituted against him." This minute gave rise to considerable dis- cussion on Monday evening, and by 14 votes to 5 was referred back. It was pointed out that in the event of the Council failing to enforce the Act, the Fac- tory Inspector could take action.
