r RHYMNEY. J. H. Williams (Rhymney) Stop Watch Competition unavoidably post- poned until Saturday, December 21st, 1918. WHIST DRIVE.—On Thursday evening a large company assembled at the Drill Hall (kindly lent) on the occasion of a Whist Drive and Dance, organised by the local V.A D. and the- St. John's Ambulance Association in aid of the Rbymney Cottage Hospital funds. The duties of M C.'s were discharged by Mr James Shields and Mr O. A. Evans. An enioyable evening was spent. The arrange- ments were in the hands of the V.A.D., with Mrs R. V. de Acton Redwood as commandant, and Mrs J. W. Price (The Terrace) superin- tendent, whilst Miss Mary Tyler (Alexandra Place) proved an energetic secretary. COUPONS A FAHCE.-At a meeting of the Food Control Committee on Monday evening, a deputation of the Rhymney Grocers' Association at- tended, consisting of Alderman W. Williams, J.P., Abertysswg Messrs J. H. Griffith and Edwin Williams, with a request that the present Coupon system be discontinued.— The Chairman (Mr R. Rutherford) pointed out that the coupons had been introduced as the result of the ugly queues, which, be felt sure, none of them wanted to see again.—Mr W. T. Hopkin described the coupons as a farce," and said that it was the registration of customers which had ended the queues.—Another member said that the only way to ensure equal distribution was by the ooupon oystem.-It was subsequently re- solved, on the motion of Mr R. Lloyd, I that the request be not acceded to. j PATRIOTIC FAIR--The arrange- ments for the grand patriotic fair to be held on New Year's Day at the I Middle Rhymney Council School, in aid of Local War Charities are pro- ceeding apace, and the Ladies' Com- I mittee are working enthusiastically with a view of making the event a huge success The ticket-sellers are I now making a bouse to house call,' and, for such a deserving object, we feel sure their self-sacrificing efforts will meet with a hearty response on the part of the townspeople generally. i Tickets are being sold at one shilling 1 each, holders of which will reoeive at the Fair' a parcel containing useful articles, representing full value—and in many cases more than value. It should ba stated that three parcels will contain in addition aWar Savings Certificate, so that the event is quite a novel one. LADIES' Cuoiti.-On Tuesday even- ing in last week, an interesting meeting was held at the Middle J Rhymney Gounoil School, under the auspices of the Ladies' Choir, who signalised their recent ituams, tit the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, | by making a series of presentations I to their talented conductress, Miss I Mary Richards, U.C W., Mrs D. M. Rees, treasurer, and Miss S. J. Jones, secretary. < Madame Clement Jones ably presided. Madame Kate Williams presented Miss Richards with a Metronome suitably inscribed; whilst a pair of Coalport Vases was presented by Mrs M. Hughes to the active secretary (Miss S J. Jones), and Mrs Margaret Howells presented Mrs Rees (treasurer) with a Japanese Bowl. Suitable responses were made by the respective recipients. During the evening several excellent songs were rendered, and short speeches delivered. FUNERALS. -The funeral of the late Mrs M. G. Benjamin, wife of Mr W. Benjamin (Manest-street) took place on Saturday afternoon. The large number present testified to the deep respect in which the departed was held. Mrs Benjamin h:r n a faithful member at Ebeneier C. U. Chapel, and also of the ohoir of that plaoe of worship for some years. The Choir members, with several choris- ters from other ehurches turned out, and under tha conduotorship of Mr Davy Jones (Dewi Carno) with fine effect reudered several favourite hymns, viz., Mae nghyfeillion adre'n myned (Lausanne) St. Gar- mon Old Derby," There was a large number of beautiful floral tri- butes. The Rev, R. W. Davies, M.A. Ebenezer, offioiated.-On the same afternoon the remains of Mr Samuel Lloyd Jones (21), son of Mr Thomas Lloyd Jones, Car no-street, and a cousin of the late Mrs Benjamin were also laid to rest, both corteges meeting at Carno-square, and pro- ceeding to the Cemetery, where the last sad rites were impressively carried out. The Rev. R. E. Pere- grine, B.D., officiated at the grave- aide. LATE MR W. J. GLENCROSS.—The funeral of Mr William James Glen- cross, managing partner of the firm of Messrs W. Glencross and Sons, High Street, whose death, after only a week's illness, was recorded in our last issue, took place on Thursday afternoon, amid general manifesta- tions of sorrow. Despite the un- favourable weather, a large number of friends and sympathisers attended, as a last tribute of respect to the de- parted. The interment was at the Rhymney Cemetery, the Rev. J. R. Dewi Williams (vicar) and Rev. J. Johns, of Llanstephaa, officiating. The other ministers present were the Revs R E. Peregrine, B.D., L T. Jones (New Tredegar), and George S. Evans (curate-in-oharge of Aber- tysswg). The mourners were :—Mr Glencross, father; Mr Tossell, father- in-law Allen, Albert, and Ted, brothers; Captain Ivor Tossell, M.O., brother-in-law Albert and Willie Glencross, nephews; Mr J. Glencross (Liverpool), Rev. J. Johns (Llan- stephan), unoles Rev. L. T. Jones, Uohdir, New Tredegar; Mr H. T. Miles, and Mr Fred Sims. There were a large number of beautiful wreaths from the following :—The sorrowing Wife and Child; Father and Mother; Allen and Lizzie, brother and sister-in-law; Albert and Hettie, brother and sister-in-law Willie and May, brother-in-law and sister; Gladys and Ted Brothers in France (Charlie and Ivor); Miss Nancy Powell; Uncle and Aunt, Liverpool; Uncle and Aunt, Upton Cousin, Dumfries Assistants at 67 and 70, High Street; Mr and Mrs H. T. Miles Directors of Fines Limited, Mr Fred Sims, Mr and Mrs Gooden, Mr and Mrs Moore, Miss Barrett, Mr and Mrs Crystol, Assistants at Fines Limited. GELLIQAER COUNCIL'S WAGES BILL. 216,199 PER ANNUK. The question of where the rates go to was revealed in an alarming state at the meeting of the Gelligaer Conneil on Tuesday, when the members had before them an application for an in. oreaso in the war bonus for the Loeal Government officials. As baaed upon a recent award, Mr Sidney Jones read oct figures supplied him by the Accountant, which showed that prior to the last bonus, the amount paid per annam to the council's workmen, excluding that of scavengers, wae 6,240, and to the officials, £ 2,820. The bonus already granted amounted to 94,680 for the men, and J6650 for the officials, making a total of 914,290. If the present applieation WM granted, the total paid to these two sections of the Council's employees would reach £ 16,199. Chairman (Mr D. Hopkins) A rate of 2/2 in the A. Mr Arthur Williams asked that the members ,'øhoa.ld be supplied with these figures, also the information re- garding other areas where the grant had beon made, showing a comparison of the rateable valae of those districts, and other details. The matter was adjourned for a month.
