I RHYMNEY. Competitors at the Powell Duffryn Hospital Sports, to be held' in Bargoed Park on Saturday, September 1st, will please note that entries positively close first post on Saturday, August 25th, and should be sent to the Secretary, Mr. Sam, Fisher, 91, Gilfach-street, Bargoed. OUTING. On Thursday, the members of the Beulah Christian Endeavour Society, in conjunction with the Tredegar Societies, held their annual outing. The party were conveyed in a large brake to Gilwern. Favoured with beautiful weather, a most enjoyable time was spent in that admirable neigh- bourhood. ¡ THE SUPREME SACRIFICE.—In a] recent issue we referred to the number of well-known local'' Tom- mies who had made the supreme sacrifice in the great conflict in France. In the case of Vivian Bowering, of the Royal Engineers, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. jBowering (High-street), only on Saturday last Mr. Bowering re- ceived official intimation from the War Office that his son had been killed by shrapnel. It should be added that the news was first conveyed here by a fellow comrade, I Private Charles Taylor (Alexandra- place), who was home on a brief furlough and returned to France at the end of last week. OBITUARY. We deeply regret having to refer to the death of Mr. David Jenkins (Havards-row), who for some time has been a machinist at the Guardian Offices. Mr. Jenkins passed away on Sunday morning last at the local Cottage Hospital, after just a week's illness. Dr. Redwood was called in on Saturday, the nth inst., and ordered the patient's removal to the hospital, where it was found necess- ary to perform a rather serious operation. Under the care and unremitting attention of the hospital staft Mr. Jenkins made creditable progress, considering the nature of his illness, but towards the end of the week his condition caused considerable anxiety, and a second operation became imperative, from which he did not rally, and the end came on Sunday as reported above. Deceased was of a quiet disposition and a capable craftsman, and the news of his sudden demise, at the early age of 33, came as a surprise to his immediate friends. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the interment being at the Rhym- ney Cemetery, the Rev. Rkys D. Jenkins (Goshen) officiating. There were a number of beautiful wreaths from :-Alrs. D. Jenkins (widow), Mother and Sisters, Messrs. G. J. Jacobs and Co., from his Fellow Employees at the Guar- dian Office, Democratic Club, Mrs. Petroons, and Miss E. M. Prosser. General sympathy is ex- pressed with the young widow and the parents, the father being an invalid, in their affliction. FOOD COMMIT] EE.—The first nH cL ing of the Food Control Committee for the Urbau Diatiict of Rhymney was held on Tuesday evening- at the Council Chnmberp. Mr B, Jones, J.P. was vott d to the chair pro tem. There wcre also present. Coun-illors W. T. Hopkm. Thomas R. Jones, J.P., and Philip Lewis, Mr E. J. Edwards, Mrs K Barrett, and Mr W. U, Trump, clerk. It was resolved that Councilllor R. Rutherford, J. P., be chairman, and Councillor Thomas R. Jones vice- chairman of the committee for the first year.-The chief business of the evening was the appointment of Exe- cutive Officer (local Food Controller), and after some dieicussion, it was resolved to aek Mr Ben, Jones to undertake the dtities.-Ur Jones said he was very reluctant to acoept the position, as owing to the calls upon his time as assistant overseer, secre- tary of the Local Relief Committee, the Welcome Home Fund, &oM they would realise that his hands were pretty full at present.—It was sug- gested that be should employ a clerk, w hose salary would be provided for urcer the Food Control Order.—Mr Jones said be realised the difficulty they wt-ro placed in, and if his aecep. teiica of the position wouid assist them, he would be pleased to comply with their request, providing he had the assistance of their clerk, to which Mr Trump kindly acquiesced, a decis- ion which was received with satis- faction.
