SUCCESSFUL EISTEDDFOD AT RHYMN8Y. On Saturday last first anooal eisteddfod, organised by the Jerusalem I Choir, was held at that chnrob, and in spito of the number of similar gatherings which have been held in the district recently, the event proved a great success. Aa excellent pro- gramme had been arranged, and the entries were exceptionally numerous, as many as fifteen and sixteen com- petitors appearing at the preliminary testa at Moriah Vestry on some of the solos, with no pees than nine choirs in the choral competitions. This clearly demonstrates that the musical fame of Rhyraney is still on the upward grade. The efficient organ- isation was due largely to the perse- vering efforts of the energetic secre- taries, Mr W. S. GrifitbR, conductor of the chapel choir, aud Mr Morris Llewellyn, one of the c'luroh organ- ists, who with the committee are to bs highly complimented upon their initial venture. Mr G-eorge Thomas, Cardiff, ably filled the presidential chair, and the adjudicators were :— Music, Mr David R. It WI.S manifest that the competition was a k?en one and notwithstanding fke fact that it was past 11 o'clock the award was awaited with much interest, Subsequently, Mr David Jones gave his adjudicatiun, and awarded the prize to Caeharns. EBBW VALE. Mr Frederick Mills, J.P., D.L., attended a parade at Ebbw Vale on Monday afternoon: held for the I purpose of presenting to the officers and members of the Ebbw Vale Cadet Corps the medals awarded by Sir! Arthur Lucas Tooth to the smartest, | best drilled, and best disciplined corps in the county. Colonel Hanbury, who was the inspecting officer, and on whose recommendation the awards were made, and Mr Mills paid h^h complimeats to th-j corps. The par- ade was under the command of Capt. T. H. Richards, Ebbw Vale.

Fruit Preserving without Sugar, Choose sound dry fruit, place in clean dry bottles or jars. Place these in slow oven and gradually increase heat until moisture in fruit is absorbed, (about 15 minutes). Then fill with boiling water to half an inch above the fruit. DERI. At the meeting of the Gelligaer Council on Wednesday, MrW. J. Giles laid a strong protest against what he characterised as the abnormal charges and conditions submitted by the owners of the Cefn-bach Estate, rela- tive to the proposed allotment grounds. The land suggested to be acquired, was a ncost desirable plot, and the prospective tenants were most anxious to acquire it, but to charge for a refuse tip, which was a menace to the district, was beyond the limit. On the basis of the pro- posed charge, the ground would work out at one shilling per perch for a seven years tenancy. He moved that they apply for a fourteen years lease. This was agreed to.

BARGOED LITTLE WHITE I RIBBONERS. SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAIN- I MFNT. The Bargoed branch of the B.W.T.A. gave a special treat to the little White Ribboners connected with the Association, at a tea and enter- tainment, held at Bethania Vestry on Wednesday evening. There was an excellent gathering, and qnite a happy time was spent by the little ones, mothers, and members. Mrs W. Jones, Baldwin-street, superintendent of the Little White Ribboners, who was largely responsible for bringing together the little ones, and who had ¡ worked so energetically is to be highly congratulated on tbo success of her efforts. Among those who superintended and assisted at the tables were Mrs J. S. Evans, (president of the Branch) Mrs (Rev.) Harri Edwards, Mrs Wright, Mrs W. Morgan, Mrs Thomas, Mrs Da vies, Mrs Wilde, Mrs J. Jones Mrs Day, Mrg H. Morgan, and Mrs Lewis Solos were contributed bv Miss E. Davies, and Master Kenneth Gabb, while interesting recitations were given by Miss Reed, the Misses Wooii, and Miss E. Thomas. Mrs J. S. Evans, accompanied on the organ Mrs (Rev.) John Roberts, (Wood- street), presided, and Mrs Perry, Aberbargoed, gave an instructive address. Cordial thanks were accord- ed the chairman, artistes, and all who contributed to the very successful and enjoyable event.

BARGOED CAPTAIN FALLS IN FRANCE, Captain J. R. McMurtrie, Bargood, of the Welsh Army Corps Engineers, is reported killed on July 26th. He had been previously wounded, and had been awarded the Military Medal. Captain McMurtrie was a bachelor, aged 34 years. When he first volun- teered he was rejected, but so eager was he to join that he underwent an operation, after which he was accepted. At the time he enlisted he was mana- gor of the Penallfa Colliery of the Powell Duffryn Company, near Ystrad -Niynael), and earlier in his career he was colliery manager at Aberoman, rnù formerly under-manager at Bar- goed. He gained the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry at Mamets Wood, and ii-?as wounded in the arm some months ago. He was an able flud popular mining engineer, much reapected by the workmen, and held in the highest esteem by the colliery company.
