I SUCCESSFUL EISTEDDFODI AT…
SUCCESSFUL EISTEDDFOD AT RHYMN8Y. On Saturday last first anooal eisteddfod, organised by the Jerusalem I Choir, was held at that chnrob, and in spito of the number of similar gatherings which have been held in the district recently, the event proved a great success. Aa excellent pro- gramme had been arranged, and the entries were exceptionally numerous, as many as fifteen and sixteen com- petitors appearing at the preliminary testa at Moriah Vestry on some of the solos, with no pees than nine choirs in the choral competitions. This clearly demonstrates that the musical fame of Rhyraney is still on the upward grade. The efficient organ- isation was due largely to the perse- vering efforts of the energetic secre- taries, Mr W. S. GrifitbR, conductor of the chapel choir, aud Mr Morris Llewellyn, one of the c'luroh organ- ists, who with the committee are to bs highly complimented upon their initial venture. Mr G-eorge Thomas, Cardiff, ably filled the presidential chair, and the adjudicators were :— Music, Mr David R. Jones, A.C., i Bargoed, ar-cl Mr }1J; Jones, A.C, conductor of the Khynney Male Voice j Choir; Literary, Councillor Wlllism Griffiths, Abertysswg. I THE INTEGRITY OF BAR. I…
THE INTEGRITY OF BAR. GOED'S RAILWAY MEN. In these days of war practically all sections of public and private concerns are hampered by the depletion of staffs and the reorganising of available em- ployees, with the incTitablc result that something goes wrong. No class has been more harassed in this respect than railway people, but in spite of all this they have accomplished their work in a marvellous and highly satisfactory manner. Many people, however, overlook the difficulties by magnifying their own, and blame railway officials when there is ab- solutely no ueed to do so. We have a couple of instances in mind where a shortage of a few bags of potatoes led the oocsigneea to attribute dis- honesty to the local railway men The matter was investigated, and the result of the enquiries proved that the potatoes bad not been loaded at the despatching station. This clearly proved that the integrity and honesty of the Bargoed railway men was above all reproach. There can be no doubt that having regard to the large i volumo of traffic handled by railway- men in general, that in all grades of the great system there is not a more honourable class of men dealing with public a&tirs than the members of the A S.R.S. DERI. i
DERI. At the meeting of the Gelligaer Council on Wednesday, MrW. J. Giles laid a strong protest against what he characterised as the abnormal charges and conditions submitted by the owners of the Cefn-bach Estate, rela- tive to the proposed allotment grounds. The land suggested to be acquired, was a ncost desirable plot, and the prospective tenants were most anxious to acquire it, but to charge for a refuse tip, which was a menace to the district, was beyond the limit. On the basis of the pro- posed charge, the ground would work out at one shilling per perch for a seven years tenancy. He moved that they apply for a fourteen years lease. This was agreed to.

INEW 1IALL, BARGOED.
I NEW 1IALL, BARGOED. BIG HOLIDAY ATTRACTION. Every true British heart thrills with pride in the achievements of our gal. lant Navy. The lads in blue face hardship and danger with a courage that nothing can daunt. They are the boys who do and dare, and around this theme, Miss Kva Elwes, the gifted young dramatist" has woven her latent play, The Middy V.C. comes Home," which will be produced at the New Hall, Bargoed, next week. The central figure, Nurse Medway, is mated to a man of criminal instincts, and the story portrays her noble efforts to keep pure and unsullied the honor: r of her midshipman son. Nor does Ü 1 want the savirg grace of humour; like Jack himaelf, the play is bright and broezy with* merrimeun that bub- bles up spontaneously. Its scenes are laid in leafy Devon, and upon th3 quarter deck of H.M.S. Neptune. Such a setting lends itself to the pic- turesque, and the scenery lacks noth- ing io realistic and artistic affect. There are great opportunities for powerful acting in The Middy V.C. oomes Home," and the fact that Mr Edward Ward is personally responsi- ble for the management and production is a guarantee that the production will be worthy of its merits. As an actor- manager of 25 years' experience, Mr Ward has been associated with many dramatic successes, notably Second to None." by Walter Howard. He will himself sustain one of the prin- cipal roles, and his outstanding ability as an interpreter of character, cannot fail to make it a noteworthy rendition. Supporting him there is a talented company. This great play will be presented once nightly dnring the coming wcek, ani matiuee on Monday.
