BHYMNEY. j
BHYMNEY. A REMINDER.—Don't forget the Eisteddfod to be held at Jerusalem Baptist Chapel to-day (Saturday). The excellent programme arranged has induced a large number of soloists and elocutionists to enter. There is also a choral competition, Ar Lan'r lorddonen Ddofn," in which quite a number of choirs are expected to compete. Come all! MUSICAL SUCCESSES.—We are glad to learn that Misses Ethel Howells, Tynewydd Street, Pontlottyn; Jemima Morris, Bute Terrace, Pontlottyn, and also Mary Hannah Williams, Upper Prince Farm, Ner Tredegar, were successful in passing the recent exam- ination in connection with the Trinity College of Music, London, h Prepara- tory Division." All were pupils of Miss Olwen Daviea, Coronation Ter- race, Rbymney, to whoih much credit is due for the high percentage of marks obtained. CORRECTION.—We regret that in the report of. the C.E. anniversary at Beulah Chapel, in last week's issue, the name of the accompanist at the morning service was erroneously given as Mrs .Newall, whereas it — <• T" should be Mrs R. Meyall, and Mr W. J. Morris, who was in charge of the recitations given by the Junior Society," was inadvertently omitted. FIRST 'VOLUNTEER OFFICER.—In the London Gazettee" appointments last week we are pleased to note the name of Mr Hooper Rutherford (manager of the New Duffryn Colliery) as Temporary Lieutenant, in the Monmouthshirfe Volunteer Regi- ment, Rhymney Company. It is- interesting to observe that Mr and Mrs Rutherford's three sons are now holding Commissions in the Army, Captain Willie Rutherford being now on Foreign Service.
OPEN AIR CONCERT AT RHYMNEY.
OPEN AIR CONCERT AT RHYMNEY. On Thursday evening last week, a highly successful concert was given at The Lawn, kindly lent by Mr and Mrs Rutherford, in aid of the local Welcome Home Fund. Fortunately, the weather, which was threatening during the morning, turned out beautifully fine, and the large audience estimated at a few thousand, was provided with a very enjoyable treat, the programme being of such a varied and entertaining character, that it could scarcely fail to meet the tastes of all. That the efforts of each performer from the smallest to the more experienced artiste were appre- ciated was demonstrated by the applause which followed most of the items. Councillor D. T. Williams, chairman of the committee, ably presided, and in opening delivered a brief address, and expressed gratification to find that the public had so handsomely responded to the appeal on behalf of that noble object. They were indebted to Mr and Mrs. Rutherford for placing The Lawn at their disposal, and for the deep interest they had taken in the event.—Upon the motion of Mr Robert Rutherford, J.P., seconded by Mr J. W. Price, M.E., cor- dial thanks were passed to Councillor Williams for presiding. j The programme opened with the "National Anthem" which, in the absence of Llipos Gwalia, was efficiently rendered by Miss Keren Morgan, after which the Upper Rhymney Infants, under the direction of Miss S. J. Jones, gave a "Country Dance," which was greatly enjoyed. Mr Luther Williams, the talented local baritone, was heard to fine advantage in the solos, '(a) For you alone," (G) The lute player," which rendering was encored. The succeeding number, a Patriotic Tableau by the Middle Rhymney Infants, under the direction of Miss Annie Thomas was another meritorious performance. Messrs. W. J. Jones, A.C. and James Evans, captivated the large audience with their masterly rendering of the ever popular duet, Mae Cymru'n Barod." The Lower Rhymney Infants, conducted by Miss Polly Jones next favoured the audience with Hob y Deri Dando," the Action Song, 'Welsh Girls,' which interesting item, terminated the first part. During the interval, Councillor W. T. Hopkin, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Rutherford, for kindly placing the Lawn at the disposal of the com- mittee, to the scholars and staff of the three schools, the Male Voice Parties, Band, artistes and all who had helped in any way to promote the success of the event. This was seconded by Mr Smith Davies and heartily adopted. Part 2 opened with an excellent rendering of "Italian Salad" by the Rhymney Glee Party, under the baton of Mr James Evans; action song Gentlemen of the Road" Upper Rhymney Mixed Instrumental," New York Patrol, Selections b, La Ruche D'or," String Band, leader, Mr Morgan Lewis, Flag Drill, Middle Rhymney Mixed, Octette, "YrHaf," Madame Clem. Jones and Miss K. Morgan, Misses Ceridwen Price and Annie Thomas, Messrs. W. J. Jones and W. S. Griffiths, Messrs. James Evans and George Jones, a very fine rendering. Action Song, Caller Herrin," Lowd Rhymney Mixed. Chorus, The War Horse," Rhymney Male Voice Party ably conducted by Mr Abel E. Jones, A.C. who gave a splendid performance. An enjoyable evening closed with Hen Wlad fy Nhadau," by Miss Annie I Thomas, who gave a pleasing rendering of the popular Welsh National Anthem. The accompaniments were efficiently played by Miss Annie R. Jones for the Artistes and for the renderings by the scholars by Miss S. J. Jones, Miss Trollope, Mrs L. Curtis, Miss Brenda Gale, and Miss Mina Griffiths, whilst Mr Gwilym R. Morris accompanied the -ao- ■ • ;yv Male Voice Party and Mr Harold Warn the String Band. The secretarial duties were in tha capable hands of Mr R. Rutherford, J.P. who, as usual, spared no effort to ensure the success of the concert, whilst Ald. John Edwards, J.P., hon treasurer, also rendered valuable services.

IFINE FLORAL FETE AT .CAERPHILLY.…
FINE FLORAL FETE AT CAERPHILLY. Ii A most successful floral fete and exhibition was held on the Castle Gronnds, Caerphilly, on Wednesday. The climatic conditions of the morn- ing were not conducive to a large gathering, but by the afternoon the weather had cleared beautifully with the result that throngs of people from the Rhymney and Aber Valleys, Cardiff, Newport, etc., found their way to the historic castle grounds. The one disappointment of the event was the inability of Sir William Jas. Thomas, (president), to attend. His letter of apology, however, was accom- panied by a donation of £10 to the funds of the local Silver Bullet Committee, who were the promoters of the day's event. Most excellent arrangements were made by an en- ergetic committee of which Mr E. E. Johnson was the capable secretary, and proved a splendid organiser, Mr E T. Griffiths, general superintend- ent, and Mr G. H. Hickerton, chair- man and treasurer. Dr. McKenzie, who formally opened the proceedings, made a pleasing announcement that Police-superintendent T. Williams, Trebarris, had reported that the police in his division which extends to Pontlottyn, had sold over P,100 worth of tickets and a cheque for this amount would be sent by chief con- stable Captain Lindsay in due course. There was an exceptionally fine rally of St. John Ambulance Brigades, Red Cross Nurses, and Kindred Associa- tions. The brilliant Royal Marine Band, (Portsmouth) under the con- ductorship of Lieutenant B. S. Green, M.V.O., (who was the guest of Mr E. T. Griffiths) gave some remarkably fine selections of high class music. The Abertridwr Silver Band under Mr S. Radcliffa, also delighted the audience. In the banquetting hall there was on exhibition a captured German Fokker Aeroplance which attracted a large crowd.. The floral exhibitions were magnifi- cent and came from the gardens of Lord Tredegar, Mr W. T. Treseder, Mrs Cory, The Duffryn, Mr J. Wells, Llanishen, Mr Evans, Llanishen, and others. Mr Bertram, the veteran horticutural judge, was delighted with the competitions, and said that the floral exhibits were exceptionally good. In the case of sweet peas, there were only four points between those grown by amateurs and the professional gardeners. There was also a very fine selection of vegetables For the best twelve blooms of roses, Mr W. T. Treseder, secured first prize; six blooms, Mr P. Cole, Tre- herbert. 1, and Mr W. North Lewig, Lisvane, second; four bunches of out flowers, Mr T. Davies, Barry, twelve vases of sweet peas, 1; Mr W. H. Holloway. Shrewsbury, -2; Mr J. H. Isaac, l Caerphilly, collection of cut flowers, Mr W. T. Treseder, who also secured a similar prize for the best collection of roses, collection of vegitables, 1; Dr. J. Clagke, Whit- church, 2 Mr W.
