CHORAL SUCCESS.-We join our readers and the public in offering heartiest congratulations to the Rhymney Male Voice Party, and its talented conduotor (Mr Abel E. Jones, A.C.,) upon their success in capturing premier honours at the Male Voice contest at Oakdale, Blackwood, on Whit-Tuesday. By this achievement the local choristers wiped off the de- feat, a fluky one which the party sustained at Pontypool Easter Eis- teddfod. The rendering by the win- ner& on Tuesday last was quite a thrilling one and it is a noteworthy fact that Blaenavon and GarndiffaJth were bracketed with as equal seconds in the competition. A COMMISSION,—We are pleased to learn that Sergeant John Douglas Cox, of the Royal Horse Artillery, has been granted a commission. Lieutenant Cox, who is a son of Mr aud Mrs William Cox, Alexandra- place, and a grandson of the late Mr John Jones, Ironmonger, Criekhowell, enlisted as a gunner soon after the outbreak of war, and within a short period was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He is an old Brecon County School boy, and was engaged in the National Provincial Bank at Bolton. Mr Cox, it should be added; also has another son serving in France viz Lance Corporal J. Stuart Cox. of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment, CYMANFA GANU. —Monday next will be an eventful day in connection with the Welsh Congregational Churches of Rhymney, Pontlottyn and Abertysswg, when the annual singing festival will be held in the morning at Nazareth, Pontlottyn, j afternoon at 7 ion Chapel, and evening at Moriah. The Congre- gationit, Cvmanfa is regarded as-one of the most popular musical events of the year throughout the district, by reason ,of the fineiqualityof the singing, and no effort has been spared, by the conductors, in main taining the .traditions of the past, and ensuring a successful festival. The programme is an excellent one and includes Several of the most popular tunes,* with a number of anthems. The- massed choirs will be under the baton of Mr. Dariler Owen, the gifted local musical i genius, who has so ably discharged the conductorship for the last three years. Foois ECONOMY. — In accordance with a resolution passed at a recent meeting of the Food 'Campaign Com- mittee, the speakers appointed visited the Imperial Cinema, and also the Victoria Hall each evening during last week, and made an urgent appeal to the audience to comply with the Food COD troller's. Order with regard to exercising the strictest economy in the consumption of food-stuffs, par- ticularly bread, and to endeavour to keep within the limits prescribed in the said Order in every respect. PRESENTATION TO MR. JOHN T. JONES, RHYiviSEY. In connection with the rehearsal of the forthcoming singing festival of the Congregational Churches oi Rhymn-y and district, held at /ion Chapel on Thursday evening, a presentation was made to Mr. John T. Jones, who has ably filled the post of secretary of the committee for the last twelve years. A very large number of choristers and other friends were present to witness the pleasant event. The chair was occupied by the Rev. R. E. Pere- grine. During the meeting the Chairman, and District Councillors H. M. Thomas. W. T. Hopkin ktreastirer of the movement), and Mr. W. R. Beddoe, Pontlottyn ksecretary), delivered addresses, all of whom emphasised the irre- proachable character of Mr. Jones, his ability and devotion to the musical art, and his valuable and ungrudging services as secretary of the committee for the lengthy period which he has occupied the post, and which accounts largely for the success which has attended the festival hitherto. The Rev. J. R. Salmon, chairman of the committee, in well-chosen words presented Mr. Jones with a note wallet, in which a considerable number of notes were enclosed, and a handsome silver-mounted walking stick, upon which was inscribed the words:—" Rhodd eyfyilledig gan Gymanfa Ganu Annibynwyr, Rhymni a'r Cylch i John T. Jones, Ysw. Mai 1917. The cordial cheers-ot the meeting having ceased, Mr. Jones suitably responded, and declared that what he had done as secretary had been a source of the purest pleasure to him, and he was prepared to con- tinue to do all he could to promote the interest of sacred music, which he regarded as one of the most important elements of Divine wor- ship. Then followed short. ad- dresses by the Rev. R. D. Jenkins, Goshen, Alderman J. Edwards, J. P and Mr. Dan. Owen, the conductor of the festival, all of whom spoke in the highest terms of the recip ient's character and his valuable service to music in the locality for the past 40 years, and the esteem in which he was held in the town ot his birth and the, district. The whole meeting was pervaded by a sane and hearty enthusiasm.
