MAYO— Pro-secretario." ■ ■: Port Madryn, Port Madryn, September 28th, 1914. To the Editor of Y DRAFOD. Dear Sir. It is common property, that a propaganda is being raised, by one or two unscrupulous persons, to influence the British Government to change our present Vice Consul, Mr. C. T. Alt,, and I would like to point out through the medium of your valuable paper, that the idea has not originated from a healthy source, with the welfare of the British community and British interests in view, but is merely a method of satisfying a personal grudge. Some time. ago, Trelew tradesmen (the C. M: C., Iam pleased to state were not of the party)-resolved to make a general com- plaint to the authorities, against the treatment received by them at the hands of the F.C.C.C. of which Company as everyone is aware, Mr. Alt is the manager. An inspector was sent down to verify some of the statements made, an d enquire into things generally, but the whole affair has turned out a failure. Mr. Alt as the Railway Manager, had all along allowed these people several privileges, in the past, not called for by the law, which have since been withdrawn, naturally the result has created a lot of bad feeling. Mr. Lloyd Davies was one of the leaders of the propaganda against Mr. Alt as Rail- way Manager, Mr. Lloyd'Davies (who is the Trelew correspondent for the B. A. Herald) is again at the head of affairs in the present, and through the medium of his paper, has made an unmitigated attack, on our Vice Consul, untruthful and slanderous, which has called loud crises of indignation, from all who have the slightest acquaintance with Mr. Alt. GERMAN AGENT AS BRITISH CONSUL. This is one of the arguments used by Mr. Lloyd Davies, in his effort to strip Mr. Alt of his office of British Vice Consul. Can it be taken seriously ? The F. C. C. C. are agents for three lines of steamers calling at Madryn: The Pacific Steam Navigation Co.; Cia. Arg. de Navigacion (Nicolas Mihanovitch) Lda.; and Linea Nacioiial (le SLicl (Delfino Hnos). The first named a British Company, the two last National Lines. Admitting.that the last named are really German property, although flying the Argentine flag" I fail to see' what this has to do personally with Mr. Alt,, who is but a servant of.the F., C. C. C. The 19th of August, the German steamer Bahia Blanca of the Hamburg American Line, arrived at this port, as has been prev- iously announced in the DRAFOD, with about 350 Spanish emigranis on board. Mr. Lloyd Davies in his article to the Herald, boldly announces that these are supposed to be German reservists, and that" Mr. Alt is their agent. In a later article, he tries to explain his mistake, by saying that the steamer had the colour of her funnel changed, and that there were a number of German gentlemen on board, travelling for their health, which fact looked suspicious. The Bahia Blanca left Hamburg before war was'declared, and touched at the usual Spanish ports. Mr. Lloyd Davies must have taxed his imagin- ation to its utmost capacity, to come to the conclusion that they ,were German reservists, or perhaps the war tension is so great, that he dreamt it. It is said that Mr. Alt is not a pure British- er. Perhaps it is not generally known, that under the law of dual nationalities, a British- er's children, although born in a foreign country, remain British unless special papers m-c. t:iketi nut to bin-d them to. the country of their birth. Mr. Alt has not taken any such -is tiot t,-il?eii any suel-i papers out, so is is ii-ii-ic h a 13ritislici, as The post of British Vice Consul for Chubut is absolutely a honorary .position. The Consul is expected to deal impartially with all British subjects, to help the needful, and advice where his, advice is required. I am certain that the Welsh Britishers of Chubut, will agree, that our present Consul, has faithfully carried out these injunctions, and that all who have come, into contact with him, in his role of Consul, appreciate the manner in which they have been dealt with. It is also said, that Mr. Alt has so much to do with the Railway, Shipping etc, that he cannot afford the time necessary to carry out ithe requirements of his office, but if you give the matter your consideration for one mo- ment, you will agree, that the fact of Mr. Alt holding these positions, enables him (with the staff at his command ) to attend to the thousand and one details expected by the British Government, and is an advantage and not a drawback to the post itself. Before ending, I would like to impress on the Britishers of this Colony, not to allow themselves to be influenced by false tales, thereby aiding these persons to gain their unjust ends. Trusting that these few remarks will reach the readers of the DRAFOD, in time to arrest the progress of their infamous scheme.—Yours Faithfully, J. T. DAVIES.
