Our Poultry Column.
Our Poultry Column. This is one of the most profitable branches of poultry culture if onty th< owner is successful in rearing and fat- tening. I know the hatching is thought dimcutt, but anyone who can hatch chickens can hatch turkeys. It is the rearing which is troubieMme un!ca& everything Is favourable, but now M not the time for hatching, they are more than half grown, so the treatment is easy and not much risk. After the first three months the young turkey will be very hardy and can stand almost any kind of treatment, even of stopping out of door both day and night. Wherw there is a lot of rough winds and snow the birds can be housed In a shed with a roof, otherwise this is unnecesary, but then the front should be covered with wire netting so as to keep the birds altogether, and ajso to keep out foxes. Everyone must be governed by these conditions. If no fear of vermin, then they can be !eft out In the air at night when they will soon find a roost in the, trees or under a cart shed, but then they cannot always know where they are. Turkeys will stick to one place If left atone and they never take kindly to fresh lodgings, yet they very soon get used to be moved In certain ways. When they are shut up for the night, and this is to be their permanent steep- ing quarters, let them be fed there for a day or two and then feed outside. From now they can be moved about In droves, and it is quite common In Nor- folk to see them being driven out In the morning and back home at night. Where a man has several fields they can be put In one for a week and then given a change, but never move the house, but always bring them back to the same roost. The acorns will be aJ! down now and they make a very good feed for turkeys, though not a fattening dtite. Roosting quarters ca<n be made almost anywhere which is easily reached from the fields, such as a rick- yard In between the stacks, or use a corner of the field which is protected from the worst winds, and then put up some high hurdles filled in with straw. and the perches about three feet from the ground, but make it with a door or outlet and no roof, for the ratn will not hurt them at oil. See they are all brought home each night and counted to see the number is correct, and If the place is big enougt you can keep twenty or two hundred like this. Before feed- ing m the morning drive them down to the field where they are to stop, then give them a soft wash in troughs, but at night a hard feed with a few handfuls of grain when they get back near their roostmg place. The turkey Is very hardy when half grown, and though not in big nocks this year, there are some nice birds about, so that by Christmas we should see some good joints hanging up which will and a ready sate. Those who have any youngsters need not worry about-the demand, there will not be enough suppty, and this means good sa!es and steady prices. It has come under my notice lately that some men are buying up all the young turkeys they can get at a reasonable agure, but unless the oner Is a good one, those who have them should hold on, because of the ready saJe later on. The cost of the food now will be great, ror the turkey can eat a big lot, but the return wi!! be good, so don t worry about the outlay for the present. If you have many birds now, It means a lot of work getting their food ready, for they should now have plenty or vegetables cooked with a little meat of some kind, and then the whole lot dried off, with part each Sussex ground oats, bran and middlings. This must be made of about the same consistency as for fowls and should be given earty morning, though Later on, when wanting to put on nesh, they can be fed three times each day. A grain feed at night will be best which can consist of oatz, wheat, maize, peas, and a few beana, any or either, so !ong as it cornea reasonable In price and is a good average sample.
